Chapter 41- To The South

Chapter 41- To The South

“So, the first wave has been spotted, huh?” Damian asked as he looked at the scout report on his hand.

“Yes, it has. The hundred or so monsters that have been scouted should be hit the southern town in a few days.”

“Hmm... what do you think will happen with the first wave, Yamato?”

“What do I think? Isn’t it quite obvious what’s going to happen already?

“Merely 100 tier 2’s are not even worth worrying about as they have little to no chance of doing any lasting damage to the town’s walls.

“We just have to make sure to kill all of them before they escape, otherwise they are going to cause more damage than all the other packs combined!” I said.

Over the last 2 weeks, more and more monsters had started appearing and had started roaming the land in packs of up to 10 monsters at a time, and while the northern villages were mostly safe, with only a few wayward monsters and no packs appearing there, the southern villages had already suffered a lot and we had to keep 3 of the 15 squads stationed in the southern baron’s territory outside the walls to just keep up with the monsters.

The central villages had also seen a few packs appear, but the soldiers and militia under Damian’s command were able to easily kill any of the monsters that appeared.

“I could guess that much, but aren’t these waves quite similar to how demons in your old world worked? So, you should be able to help me get a rough idea as to how things are going to evolve, right?”

“...Yes, if what the goddess and you say are correct, we are going to see a lot worse waves. But, unless tier 3 monsters that can cast magic appear—”

“They will.” Goddess Rae cut in.

“—The walls will be just fine, and we’ll hold our ground. But against tier 3’s who are... somewhat intelligent?” I said, looking at Goddess Rae to confirm my line of reasoning.

“Yup, they are. But they cannot be compared to an adult Homunculi or a Human. Just imagine lesser devils from your old world, the intelligence of tier 3 monsters is like them.”

“Thank you for the explanation, Goddess Rae.” I said, thanking her before continuing.

“But, against monsters that can cast magic and can somewhat lead their troops and come up with plans of their own? We are going to struggle. Though, we should be able to kill one or two of them with some planning and overwhelming numbers.

“...Well, our chances would also be better if you told me about that little project of yours so I could start including in my plans as well.” I said, but Damian just smirked as he looked at me.

“Oh, I am not telling you about project “Fuck You”. Like I said, it’s a secret!”

“...I know you are just joking Damian, but people are going to die because of your little jokes.” I said, and saw Damian’s face go sour.

“Yamato, I am serious, knowing or not knowing the details of project “Fuck You” will not help you in anyway, shape, or form. And for all I know, it may not even work, so there is no need for you to think of it as a triumph card or anything like that.

“When you encounter the first tier 3, just send a horsemen to the capital, and I’ll quickly polish the project and come down there with some escorts and the project.”

“And why are you keeping it secret from me again?”

“Because it is funny seeing you try and trick me into talking more about it?” Damian said with a smirk.

“And not like anyone other than 3 people in the whole empire can use it, and I am the only person that can use it in full capacity.” He then added.

“3 people in the whole empire? Who’s this new tier 2 that I haven’t heard of yet?”

“Oh, he’s just one of the inscriptors. Guess working with mana stones so much made him grow a mana stone or something like that. Sadly, we don’t know a lot about mana stones and while a certain someone could tell us more, she rejects to.” Damian took a not-so-subtle jab at Rae.

“Hey, if I told you everything then what would be the point of giving you those quests and researches be?!” Rae said, defending herself from Damian’s sudden attack.

“The point of it would be it’d make my job a lot easier! You want me to conquer the galaxy or at least take down a few of your siblings, no? The least you could do is help me a bit.”

“What do you think the system I gave you is for?!”

“To help me, but you could always just cheat a bit too!”

“I can’t!”

“And who says that?”

“Literally every god and goddess in existence, including my parents?!”

“Well, they are not here to stop you, right?”

“W-well, they are not, but it’d be against the spirit of the great game!”

“Sure sure... anyways, why are you looking at me like that Yamato?”

“...Nothing. Do you want me to do anything before heading out of the capital?”

“Hmm... before you go, tell me what your plans are for when you first arrive at the southern town, and make sure to keep me updates whenever you defeat a wave as, while I’ll get notified of whenever you defeat a wave thanks to my quests—”

“You won’t, Wave Breaker I will only be completed once you defeat all the waves preceding the tide.” Rae cut in and corrected Damian.

“—While I’ll be notified when you defeat all the waves, I still won’t have any clue as to what is going on the field and will need reports on what actually happened, how many men died or became injured, and what tactics you used.

“Because I still happen to be lacking in the military tactics department and your reports will be useful for educating myself, future knights and officers, and for historians to look at in the future.”

“Will there really be historians in the future? I mean, you and I are both immortal, and are living through the history as it happens, so they could just ask us, no?”

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

“...Yamato, do you seriously think you’ll remember what happened here in the next century? Hell, I don’t even remember what I ate for breakfast today! I definitely am not remembering what happened here and why we did what we did here in a few years!

“And I’d doubt that you are much better than me in the memory department!”

“...1.5 loaves of bread, 1/3 of a roasted rabbit, a bowl of salad—”

“I-I wasn’t asking you what you had for breakfast.”

“...I am telling you what you had for breakfast. Not what I had for breakfast. I am just trying to show you that I have a far better memory than most.”

“...Fair. But you’ll probably be the head of the military a century down the line, and I doubt that you’d have enough time to give personal interviews to historians.”

“...Makes sense.”

“Anyways, do you want to start telling me about your plans?”

“Of course.

“When I first arrive in the town, I’ll start the inspection of the walls, the barracks and other military infrastructure, and the granaries.

“And I will also personally investigate some reports I’ve heard about there being a tension between the baron’s forces and the royal army. Though I am not sure about the validity of those claims as the head knight I sent there didn’t report the baron’s knights acting any different than normal towards him, though that might just be because he’s not well versed in politics. Not that I expected him to though.”

“Hmm... I’ve heard of that too, but I can’t validate them either. Hopefully you are able to find out the truth, and hopefully it just turns out to be some bad blood between a few of the soldiers instead of the locals not liking the hundred or so soldiers that have appeared in their town out of nowhere.” Damian said, and looked thoughtful for a moment.

“...Is that all? Or do you have something else do you want to tell me? If not, you may head out.”

“Then I will.” I said and got out from my seat.

“Godspeed, Yamato!” I heard Damian say as I left the room.

“You should say Goddesspeed.”

“Oh, shut up Rae.” I heard Damian say from behind the closed door.

“...Hopefully no one else hears their bickering...” I thought to myself as I started making my way out of the administrative quarters.

Reaching the small squad of horsemen waiting for me, I quickly got on my horse and started making my way out of the town, being escorted out by a few regulars and militiamen.

While normally it’d take a normal man a day or tow days at worst to reach the southern town, with our horses we were there in a few hours, and as the gates into the town were lifted, I was greeted by 3 knights and their squads.

“Greetings Supreme Commander Yamato!” The head knight I assigned to the town said as he lightly bowed to me with the rest of the soldiers.

“Guide me to your office.” I said, wanting to get to working immediately.

“Of course. Follow me Supreme Commander.” The knight said, and led me and my small squad to the small mansion in the middle of the town.

The Baron’s mansion wasn’t anything to impressive—from my last world’s standards that is. But Damian hadn’t tried to build anything good looking for himself and had decided to just live in a modest house like the rest of his officials, but that made the baron’s 2 story mansion even more impressive than it actually was due to its sheer size.

Though, like I said, it was still nothing impressive. One might even say it was primitive looking, but I heard that it had 20 rooms or so, so it was somewhat useful.

“Here, this is my office.” The head knight showed me into a room on the second floor, and I cold see a desk, a few chairs, and few shelves filled documents.

“...I need to tell them how to better hide important military documents. Though the baron has been docile so far, so I’d doubt that he’d try something funny...” I thought to myself as I looked through the documents.

“Do you have another office prepared for me?” I asked the head knight.

“No Supreme Commander. I was planning on forfeiting this room to you and making my office in the room next to this one.”

“Then I’ll be taking this office as mine.” I said as I sat down on the chair, and started looking through the drawers of the desk.

Then, I took out a quill and some blank papers, and a bottle of ink from one of the drawers, and started writing some quick orders on them, and stamped them down while the head knight and his squire watched me.

“Here—” I said, handing them to the squire.

“—Hand these out to the 6 riders I came here with, and tell them to write down their reports and hand bring them to my office after they are done. They have a 2 days to complete all their tasks, and their new tasks will be issued by me after they are done.”

“Yes, Supreme Commander.” The squire said, and headed out after looking at his sir, and getting permission to head out.

“May I ask what was written on those papers, Supreme Commander?” The head knight asked.

“Call me Commander or Commander Yamato while we are behind closed doors. And they were just basic orders to carry out inspections of various facilities around the town. You will get to read those reports too, don’t worry.”

“Of course, Commander. Do you need my help with anything, or shall I head out and continue working as usual?”

“I need you to first tell me where everything is in this room, and then I need to talk to you about the quarrels between our troops and the baron’s forces.”

“Of course, Commander Yamato—” The head knight started, but was cut off by a knocking on the door.

*Knock Knock*

Before I could allow whoever was knocking on the door to enter in though, they opened the door and let themselves in.

*Creak~*

As the door opened a man wearing plate armour walked in.

“One of the baron’s knights?” I thought immediately as I saw him enter, as I was sure none of the knights in the army would dare insult their superiors by entering a room without permission.

And when I saw the emblem engraved into the man’s chest, which depicted a spear and a bow in front of a wall, I became sure that it was one of the baron’s knights as the knights of the royal army had a crown on them, signifying they were the emperor’s men.

“Head knight—” The man started as he entered the room, but became confused when he saw my face.

*Swoosh*

“WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TO ENTER HERE WITHOUT PERMISSION YOU IMBECILE!” The head knight screamed as he swiftly took out his sword from its scabbard, and brought it to the man’s neck in a fluid motion.

“Oh, how they grow up...” I thought as I watched the black armoured knight’s equally dark blade shine slightly in the evening light streaming into the room.

But the man didn’t look like he was threatened by the blade at his neck, and stared at the head knight for a moment before stepping back and bowing lightly.

“Apologies Supreme Commander Yamato, and Head Knight Joseph. I thought the Supreme Commander wouldn’t have chosen this room as his office, and wanted to talk to Knight Joseph about something important.” The man said, but the head knight still remained angry.

“And that gives you the right to enter my room without permission?!”

“Apologies again, Head Knight. You usually don’t mind people entering your room without permission for important matters, so I thought it wouldn’t be a problem this time either.

“I didn’t know the Supreme Commander would be here, and for that transgression of mine, I do apologize deeply.” The man said, still bowing.

“You should’ve known better! Your servants saw us entering the mansion! There should’ve been no room for—”

“That’s enough head knight.” I said, trying to calm down the situation.

And while I could tell that the head knight was still angry, he listened to my orders none the less.

“Rise knight...”

“Knight Karl, Supreme Commander Yamato. I am from the first batch of Summons of the Baron if you are wondering the origins of my name.”

“Knight Karl, for this one I will give you the benefit of the doubt, and will not give you any formal punishments. But you, or any of your fellow knights, are not to enter my room under any circumstances.

“Even if we are under attack by monsters. You will first get the permission of the head knight, and then you will be allowed to enter my room after I allow you in, understood?”

“Understood Supreme Commander Yamato. I once again grant my—”

“No need to apologise again Knight Karl. Now tell us why you wanted to visit the Head Knight?”

“Of course, Supreme Commander.” Karl said, as he straightened his back.

“I came here—”

“When did I tell you to stop bowing?” I said, looking at Knight Karl’s eyes, and he seemed surprised for a moment before bowing down again.

“I apologize Supreme Commander, I assumed that—”

“Then don’t assume again. Ever.

“I know that you’ve not gone through my training, but you should now not to assume what your superiors have not said. Be more careful next time lest you do something worse than just disrespecting me slightly.”

“Understood Supreme Commander, I’ll be more careful with how I act from now on!”

“Now, tell why you are here. While bowing.”

“Of course, Supreme Commander.

“I came here to get permission from the head knight to meet with you.” Knight Karl said, and for a moment I wanted to facepalm after understanding that I didn’t need to be so harsh on him after all.

Not that I apologized or anything. He was too below my level that he wasn’t deserving of such respect.

“Permission given. Now, tell me, why did you want to meet me?” I asked Knight Karl.

“Supreme Commander Yamato, Baron Jay wants you to join him in dinner.” Knight Karl said.

“...So, I really, really did not need to be so harsh on him, huh?” I thought to myself, before agreeing to the offer.
