Chapter 27: Druid and Barbarian

Egilina was in a good mood as she left the room.

She was originally worried that Roland might become arrogant after he managed to avoid conflicts with 11 forces, while the fact was that it was quite an occasional case, and the outcome could have been completely different. After all, Roland was only eighteen years old. He was at an age when every boy was young, energetic, overconfident, and rebellious.

But his composure far exceeded her expectations.

She wasn’t aware that Roland's mental age was not eighteen, but mistook his calm and poised leadership qualities as inherent and was more confident in this investment.

After watching Egilina leave, Roland started to think of Granni.

He originally didn't want to blame Granni, but after thinking about it carefully, what Egilina said made sense. Better talk to her.

Following the sound of trees being cut down, he found Granni.

When he found Granni, she had just felled the third big tree. She put down the giant axe and used the small axe to trim the branches.

Roland wanted to talk to her, but was captivated by the skillful way she wielded the axe. So he chose to observe her behind the tree for a while.

Granni's method of exerting force was unique. She didn't use sorcery or martial skills, but relied solemnly on physical instinct.

That was unusual.

In the world of Tiamat, high-order fighter could split mountains and rocks, tear apart monsters, and even fly ----the basis of all those is a kind of special power called Qi.

But Granni was different from them. She didn’t not use Qi, but she exhibited strengths and skills far beyond ordinary people.

Granni’s battles, particularly her near-fatal encounter with Astrologer Egilina despite being at great disadvantage, demonstrated her exceptional combat talent.

Roland also recalled how she broke his arm with sheer force during a burst of anger. It was an impossible act considering that he was a third-order knight enhanced by various kinds of sorceries. Even a forth-order warrior should not have been able to break his arm, but Granni, a third-order barbarian, easily destroyed his defense.

That was so strange!

As Roland was lost in thought, Granni sensed someone’s presence behind her back, and turned abruptly and hurled her axe with right hand. Fortunately, she recognized Roland in time and caught the axe mid-air with incredible speed with left hand.

Roland was astounded by her reflexes and strength.

How could she possibly catch a flying axe?

Was she really a maid that he bought for 22 divine gold coins? Just 22?

Well, thinking of how Melannis was traded for 1 divine gold coin...Roland was not that surprised anymore. Who knows how the System works, right?

“Sorry, Lord. I didn’t recognize it was you, and I almost hurt you.” Granni kneeled in apology before him.

Roland smiled, shook his head and was about to tell her it was fine, when Egilina’s advice about fixing Granni’s recklessness and the fact that Granni executed Lana and Julie out of anger came to his mind. He retrieved his words.

While justifiable, and Lana and Julie did deserve deaths, Granni’s actions were always impulsive and dangerous, necessitating a change to avoid her recklessness in the future.

Roland put on a serious face and said in a deep voice:

“If it wasn’t me, do you plan to kill somebody just because they were trying to approach you?”

With her head lifted up, Granni replied:

“Why not? ‘Someone’ approached me from the back and observed me in silence, it was obviously ‘someone’ had no good intention. Why should I be merciful to an enemy?”

What if it was your friends who tried to surprise you for something? Or......

Roland remained silent and felt a sudden headache, since he knew Granni wouldn’t understand what he was trying to imply.

“My Lord, you know, I’m always dumbheaded. Please directly tell me where I did wrong! “

On listening Granni’s voice filled with frustration and upset, Roland couldn’t help but pat Granni on the hand, which meant “it was fine”.

“Well, let’s talk about this later...and, why do you go out to fell the trees, and 3 trees in a row?”

“I fell 3 trees every day, my lord!” Granni replied with pride and confusion.

“That’s right. But do you know what a Druid is?”

“Druid? My Lord, do you mean the guy with a green hat and other green decorations? The guy who looked like a plant?”

“That’s him. He belonged to an organization where everyone is an environmentalist, that is, they support planting instead of felling trees. Granni, we should respect our guest’s belief when he’s here. Do I make sense?”

“We’ll be great partners then!” Granni was suddenly very excited, “He can be responsible for planting trees, while I’m responsible for felling them!”

Looking into Granni’s innocent eyes, Roland was speechless.

“My Lord, am I wrong? But I’ve heard shamans from the tribe said that old trees must be felled, or else they would prohibit the young trees from growing up. Shamans said this was balan...balan...”

“Balance?”

“Yes, you’re omnipotent, my lord!”

“And I do believe that Luet has a deep understanding of Balance. Don’t you think he will be a good teacher for us to study what ‘balance’ is?”

“Great! He can teach me how to plant trees, and I can teach him how to fell trees.”

Roland fell speechless again. Actually, he almost blacked out.

A barbarian is a barbarian! Now he knew why Granni’s teachers left with an unhappy face.

“What’s up? Should I send you to Melannis, my lord?”

”Granni, there’s something I want to announce.”

“What is it?”

Roland didn’t want to give up.

“I will be your teacher in the next few days. I will teach you how to read and write.”

That’s quite a challeging, difficult teaching task. But I believe in myself, Roland thought.
