“Yep, Grandma Sha,” I nodded as Grandma Sha went to get some rest.
Under the dim light, his face was pale as the snow outside, similar to someone who was terminally ill. I had never witnessed someone else’s death before, though I witnessed my own death. It was a scary and desperate process, and I never wanted to experience that again.
He had a heavy blanket on, which was full of pilling. I attentively lifted the blanket up a bit to take a better look at all the bandages, to see if any of the wounds were missed. For some of the spots, blood was still trying to ooze out. These wounds must be very deep. Where was he from, to have gone through this kind of abuse? Maybe he encountered that flying horse like me? Most of the demons in this village were cold natured, but they were peaceful. They were cold because life was hard. They were all beaten up, but definitely not mindless savage creatures to hurt someone like this.
On the wooden stool, his clothes were all stained with dried blood. The clothes were so different from here. The Aniesian Continent was vast, so perhaps not all demons were as peaceful as the commoners here in the Land of Ruins? Grandpa Jin did briefly mention the demon world has its chaos, so perhaps this was one of the chaos?
It was a small village here, and I had never gone elsewhere ever since arriving in this world. After encountering this young man, one big lesson I got was to never leave the Land of Ruins.
Never!
He looked as if been through hell!
Maybe outside of the Land of Ruins, there was a hell!
It was better to eat sweet potatoes everyday than going to hell, right?
I took the bowl of herbal soup off the table, and used the wooden spoon to get some of the soup. I tasted it myself, the temperature was right, but a few drops were enough for my face to look like a sour lemon. Yes, that was the same taste as the one I had before. The herbal soup was at least a couple times more bitter than a bitter melon. Even though it tasted real bad, it had some level of healing power.
Poor thing, still had to drink this bitter herbal soup before going to heaven. It was probably not worth doing.
Still, there might be a chance of surviving, better not to give up.
I put the spoon of herbal soup next to his mouth, and gently poured a bit in, but the liquid just went out the corner of the mouth. I quickly wiped it off with a hand cloth. He was just not taking in any liquid at all, and still super pale. It looked like he completely lost consciousness, and was unable to swallow at all. I didn’t want to drown him with herbal soup. Thinking that this person I just rescued a few hours ago would die before dawn was not something easy to digest. In my old life, once a while I would hear from friends that their grandma or grandpa had passed away, or knew someone that had lost an elderly family member, but I had never seen a person dying in front of me.

It was sort of helpless because there was no hospital and doctors here. In the demon world, it was all about natural selection and survival of the fittest.
I put the bowl down, and started to fix one of the bandages since it was soaked with blood.
I took it off from his arm. My eyebrows were squeezed together, and couldn’t help but shiver inside. The wounds were deep to the bones, and the flesh was dark red as if whatever hurted him contained a poison. I put a good portion of herbs that Grandma Sha had prepared earlier on the wounds, carefully wrapped a clean bandage, and lastly tied an ugly knot.
The bandage used was not like the modern world, but more like a piece of long and clean fabric cut from a coarse cloth. It was no way sterile.
It was amazing how strong the demons’ immune systems were, and a miracle that he was still alive, considering the amount of blood lost and continued to lose.
Just two more hours, it would be dawn. I wanted to make his last few hours as comfortable as possible, and changed a few more wet bandages. Then put the blanket back on to keep him warm.
Hmm……His bronze mask did not look too comfy, how about taking it off?
I leaned over and tried to find the tie around the ears, but there was nothing. I gave it a try, but the bronze mask did not budge a hair.
Well, that was so strange!
There was nothing tying the mask onto his face, how come it couldn’t be taken off? Did he super glue that onto the face? That was just a silly thought, who in the world would do such a thing!
I didn’t want to cause another injury on his face. He already had enough wounds, if more, he would look like a honeycomb for sure.
I sat and curled up, then watched this guy as an owl watched over its prey at night. I stared hard at his chest area, observing every breath and waited for any inconsistency. Every time his breathing went irregular, I felt a shortness of breath myself and held tight onto my knees.
There was no way I could become a doctor or nurse, even if there was such an occupation in the Aniesian Continent.
It was just hard to watch someone suffer while knowing there was nothing I could do to help. Fine, I was a scaredy-cat, I admit it!
My old life was relatively smooth (assuming stupidity was not counted as one of them), and I never had encountered a tragedy before. The traverse to this new world was my first ever challenging tragedy.
I was waiting with every nerve on that last breath, but somehow he managed to pull it through every time, until…….
The first ray of dawn shone through the window, and added a layer of golden on his face to make it look more lively.
Thank God!
He survived dawn!
The rays from the sun gave a sense of hope to his recovery. In the next two days, I managed to get some liquid down his throat. He definitely looked less pale than before, and was slowly recovering. His back was the most injured, but at least it stopped bleeding.
Still, he had not woken up yet.
Was he forever in the vegetative state?
