Chapter 18: Breakfast and Goodbyes

The evening passes in silence, before morning's light comes, waking the group from their restful slumber.

Tyrion is the first of the party up, assisting Niara with cooking breakfast. She welcomes the aid, and before long, the halflings have a feast prepared; sausages, eggs, crisp bacon and cram, and slices of apples. Niara pulls out a small jar and a blunted knife, opening the jar and dipping the knife in, smearing a dark purple goop across one of the cram squares. Tyrion's eyes brighten significantly at the sight. "Is...Is that jelly?"

Niara looks up. "Hm? Yeah. Made it myself. Have you not had any in a while or something?"

"You have no idea, lass. I've been livin off of scraps for years now; torn hunks of bread, slices of cheese, stolen fruits and vegetables. It's been rougher than I'd have liked." Tyrion grabs an apple slice and chews on it thoughtfully.

"Oh...Do-do you want to talk about it, or...?" Niara sits back, a look of concern on her face, but Tyrion shakes his head. "No, lass, it's not something I want to dwell on. Got better things to do than mope about."

"No, I suppose I understand." She nods, holding the jar and knife out. "Would you like some?" Tyrion smiles in that same jovial manner and takes the offered items, spreading jelly over a cram square as the others begin to gather.

"Good morning, everyone!" Anna exclaims cheerfully as she gets out of her bedroll, head still wrapped up in the cloth Amadeo gave her.

"Good morning!" Serenity stretches, snatching a piece of bacon and plopping down to eat. "How'd everyone sleep?"

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

"I've had better rest, but I've also had worse." Hope sits up with a groan. "Think I'm still tingling from all that lightning."

"Eh, you'll be fine, Red. Just come eat, it always makes me feel better." Serenity motions Hope over, who sits with the group as Amadeo and Drum stumble out to join them.

"So where will you go now?" Hope asks, enjoyng some sliced apple. Serenity shakes her head. "Hard to say. Figured Mysthaven first, then Uriel's Rest. I've always wanted to visit the old king's tomb, the man whose constant wars made it possible for so many kids to lose their families and be forced to survive on the streets...You?"

Hope shrugs. "Kaina first. The beach sounds relaxing after this trip, then time for some jobs. Figure I'll make a name for myself. Someone I know said to show the people who look down on me that I'm not what they think I am, one day at a time, with my own two hands." Tyrion smirks at this, but says nothing.

"Well, I wish you luck. What name should I be looking for when you all become famous?" Serenity sips some water from her flask.

"Leur. We chose the name 'Leur'." Tyrion beams proudly, and Serenity laughs. "Interesting choice. I'll be sure to keep an ear out, then."

Breakfast ends all too soon, and they pack up to go their separate ways. As the two groups begin to head off, Serenity stops. "Hey, Red. Almost forgot." She holds out something to Hope, who looks at it and blinks. "Wait, how'd you-" Serenity holds a finger to her counterpart's lips. "Shhh. Bad habit. Maybe next time, I'll teach you a thing or two." With a wink, the orange devilkin walks away with her companions, mounting up and riding off.

"What'd she give you?" Amadeo asks, shouldering his pack. Hope holds up a small gold ring etched with a wolf's head. "I dunno how she got hold of it. I didn't even think about it till after she gave it back to me."

"You don't wear rings. What's that one for?" Tyrion tilts his head. Hope looks away and clears her throat. "It's special to me. A good man gave it to me. But that's a story for another time, little man...Let's go. Off to Kaina with us! To the beach!"

"To the beach!" Anna shouts, then she stops and grimaces. "Ugh...and the sun everywhere." The party shares a laugh, heading down the road toward Kaina, the Iron City of the East.
