Chapter four: Turning point

As Ethan walked through the lively and bustling marketplace, he felt a sense of wonder and excitement. The vendors were shouting out their wares, trying to get people's attention. The colors of the fabrics and the smells of the food made Ethan's senses come alive.

Ethan wandered through the market, admiring the various goods. He stopped as he saw a clothing vendor and examined the fine fabrics on display. He decided to buy himself some high-quality clothes, something he had never done before.

As he was picking out his new attire, he noticed some nobles watching him with disdain. They thought he was just another poor beggar. Ethan isn’t rich but he isn’t poor either, with having a couple gold coins, he had more money than most normal citizens.

He picked up five sets of clothes, three of which were just some normal clothes and the other two being high quality ones with the colours black, dark blue and purple. „How much is all this?“ asked Ethan the shop keeper.

The shop keeper was a burly and tall man, with brown hair and black eyes that looked like he was in his thirty’s. „Three common rank and two magic rank set’s of clothes go for 20 silver and 90 copper coins.“ Said the burly man. Ethan gave his coins to the man and left the shop with his new clothes.

Ethan continued his journey through the city, stopping at a restaurant to eat and drink some coffee.

The aromas of the freshly brewed coffee mixed with the delicious scents of the food being prepared in the kitchen.

As he sat down to enjoy his meal, he noticed the same group of nobles from before, sitting across the room, staring at him. Ethan only snorted in disdain, knowing that he was being judged based on his appearance. He was wearing his normal worn out clothes, which didn’t look good anymore at all. But that didn’t matter to Ethan, he ignored the nobles and started eating his meal in silence.

After finishing his meal, Ethan left the restaurant and continued his walk through the city. He wandered through the bustling streets, taking in the sights and sounds around him. As he walked deeper into the noble district, he saw something that made him disgusted and a little angry. Slaves of all kinds of races were being sold like cattle, treated as nothing more than property.

Ethan was furious at the sight of this injustice, but he knew that he couldn't do anything about it. He was just one man, and the nobles had all the power in the city. He continued walking, feeling a sense of hopelessness and weakness.

As the sun began to set, Ethan made his way back to his small house. He entered his home and lay down on his bed, mentally exhausted from the day's events. As he closed his eyes, the desire to get stronger grew even more after seeing the slaves. He wanted to get stronger, so that he can do whatever he wanted to. Ethan isn’t some kind of hero, but also not someone who just looks away from those in need of help. He thinks himself as a good person, so he wants to help people, but alas, this world is a cruel one where the weak die and the strong thrive.

Several hours later.

Suddenly…

BOOOOOOOM

Ethan's heart was pounding in his chest as he stumbled out of his house, still trying to process the loud noice that had woke him up.

His ears rang with the echoes of the deafening noise that had roused him from his sleep, a sound unlike anything he had ever heard before. As he emerged into the light of day, his eyes widened in horror at the sight before him.

The once-thriving city of Greenwood was gone. In its place lay nothing but rubble, debris, and corpses. Everywhere he looked, Ethan saw the signs of destruction and chaos.

Buildings had crumbled to the ground, carriages were overturned and crushed, trees lay uprooted and snapped in half. And among it all were the lifeless bodies of the city's inhabitants, some still clutching their belongings or reaching out as if to beg for help.

Ethan's breath caught in his throat as he surveyed the scene. How could this have happened? Who could have caused such devastation? He struggled to make sense of it all, his mind racing with questions and fears.

As he moved through the wreckage, searching for any sign of survivors or clues as to what had happened, Ethan couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched.

He looked around warily, his senses on high alert for any threat. But there was nothing, no movement, no sound, no sign of anything living.

Ethan couldn't help but feel a growing sense of unease. Something was not right here. He had lived in Greenwood city for the past 5 weeks now and couldn’t believe it, but now it was all gone, as if it had never existed.

He felt lost, disoriented, and more alone than he had ever been before.

As he continued to search, Ethan's mind began to play tricks on him. He thought he saw movement out of the corner of his eye, heard whispers on the wind, and felt a chill run down his spine as if he was being followed. He tried to shake off the feeling, but it only grew stronger.

Finally, as the sun began to set, Ethan found himself at the edge of the destroyed city, standing on the threshold of the last remaining section of Greenwood. Here, the buildings were still standing, the streets were intact, and there were even a few people moving about.

Ethan approached cautiously, unsure of what to expect. The people here looked frightened and shell-shocked, like they had just come through a warzone. They huddled together in small groups, speaking in hushed tones, and casting wary glances at Ethan as he approached.

"Excuse me," Ethan said, trying to sound calm and friendly, "What happened here?"

The people looked at him, their eyes wide and wary. "You don't know?" one of them asked, incredulous.

Ethan shook his head. "I woke up to the sound of the explosion. I had no idea what had happened until I saw the destruction."

The people exchanged glances, then one of them spoke up. "It was a second evolution monster. It wiped out almost the entire city in one fell swoop."

„What?“ said Ethan in astonishment, confusion and fear. „Why would a monster destroy a city like this?“

„We don’t know, but i think someone angered it and it responded with this devastating attack.“ Answered the same man.

„So you’re saying someone did this on purpose?“ Ethan asked in bewilderment.

„Yes, but its only a hunch. Like i said we don’t know why it really attacked.“

Ethan grew silent as he heard what the man said. He couldn’t believe it. Why would someone anger a powerful beast on purpose, only for it to destroy a whole city just like that? Was it greed? Revenge? or maybe even boredom? Ethan didn’t know, but only after this did he realise how narrowly he escaped death.
