Chapter five: Monster

chapter five: monster

rumble…

„Hmm?“

rumble… rumble…

„What’s happening?“ asked Ethan no one in particular.

rumble… rumble… rumble…

He jumped up the last remaining tower of the city walls and saw countless dots moving in the distance.

Ethan's heart sank as he realized the implications of what he was seeing. A monster tide.

A monster tide of this size and power was not something to be taken lightly. He quickly turned and began to run towards the nearest and last remaining city guards, hoping to warn them and help prepare for the incoming attack.

But as quickly as he started to run, he stopped.

„Does it really matter…?“ mumbled Ethan. „The guards aren’t even in the first advancement yet, what can they even do…? Instead of warning them, i should prepare myself right…? Shit.“

As Ethan gradually realised, that he is the only one strong enough to kill all of these beasts, his eyes and heart turned cold.

He turned towards the side the monsters are coming from, watching them, how they so desperately run.

„I will survive.“ said Ethan before he began running towards the creatures.

Ethan's heart was racing as he fought through the endless tide of monsters. He had never seen so many beasts in one place before. The streets were littered with the bodies of the fallen, and the air was thick with the stench of blood and death.

But Ethan refused to give up. He had seen firsthand the destruction that the second evolution monster had caused, and he knew that he couldn't let these weaker monsters continue their rampage. With each swing of his sword, he felt his anger growing, fueling his determination to survive and protect the city and its people.

As he fought, he could feel his body straining under the exertion. He was running on pure adrenaline, his muscles burning with the effort of swinging his sword and dodging the beasts' attacks. But despite the pain and exhaustion, he refused to back down. He already killed hundreds of monsters, all below level 15.

It was during one particularly fierce battle that he gained two new skills. A surge of energy coursed through his body, and suddenly he felt stronger, faster, more powerful than before. It was like a switch had been flipped inside him, and he could feel his mind and soul strengthening alongside his body.

With this newfound strength, Ethan began to cut a path through the monster tide with even more ferocity. He moved faster and with more agility than before, dodging the beasts' attacks with ease and slicing through them with deadly precision. His sword flashed through the air, leaving a trail of blood and gore in its wake.

Despite the overwhelming odds, Ethan refused to give up. He had faced death countless times in his adventures, and he knew that he had the strength and willpower to overcome any challenge. His new passive skills, "Undying Will" and "Regeneration" only strengthened his resolve, giving him an almost supernatural strength and resilience.

As the battle raged on, Ethan found himself pushing his limits more and more. He narrowly avoided the jaws of a massive beast, rolling to the side and coming up in a fluid motion to drive his sword through the creature's skull. He felt the impact reverberate through his arm, but he didn't let it slow him down. The only thought in his mind were to kill. To kill all monsters.

The monsters continued to come at him, but Ethan fought on, his determination unbroken. He was a force of nature, an unstoppable juggernaut cutting a swath through the monster tide. He could feel his stamina and HP increasing with each passing moment, and he estimated that he could keep going for at most an hour if he needed to.

It was only when the last of the beasts had fallen that Ethan finally allowed himself to stop. He was covered in sweat and blood, his chest heaving as he gasped for air. But he felt alive in a way that he had never felt before. His mind and body were in perfect harmony, working together in perfect sync to achieve his goal.

As he stood there, looking out over the carnage he had wrought, Ethan couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. He had protected the last remains of the city and its people, and he had done it through sheer force of will. He knew that he would face more challenges in the future, but he was ready for them. With his undying will and regeneration, he knew that he could overcome anything that stood in his way.

Or so he thought.

ROOOOAAAAR.

An almighty roar shook the entire land.

Debris and corpses were flying through the air, killing all of the last remaining survivors.

Even Ethan was flung through the air and into the last remaining city wall, coughing up blood.

A lot of bones were broken, his internal organds shaken to the core and his hearing was none existent.

He didn’t move, of fear of being discovered by whatever that roar was.

His regeneration started kicking in, his wounds slowly closing but even with regeneration the broken bones and internal organs would take much more time.

His hearing was the first that returned.

But he wished that it didn’t.

He heard heavy and strong steps, slowly walking through the rubble and broken streets.

Ethan opened his eyes and saw something that gave him the feeling of primordial danger.

A beast so big it almost reached the 15 meters tall city walls. It was standing on its four legs, each brimming with unending energy. It looked like a mix of a black panther and a gorilla, with razor sharp teeth lining its mouth and giant muscles all over its entire body. It was completely black in color with small dark green linings on its paws and head.

Ethan didn’t speak. He didn’t even think.

He only hoped that this dreadful monster would walk away. What could he even do against something like this? Only death awaits him should the creature notice him.

Suddenly, the monster moved.

It sniffed the air, turning around in different directions until it stopped and looked straight at Ethan.

Ethans heart almost stopped as it watched him. His fate now lay in the hands of this beast.

„Interesting…“ spoke the gorilla like panther in a deep voice. „Why are you so interesting…? What is it about you….?“

It spoke?! A monster can speak?!

Ethan didn’t know what to say.

'It said im interesting, but why? i don’t even know myself… maybe because im not from here? but i can‘t just tell him that right…?' thought Ethan as he looked at the creature.

"I don’t know what you mean, Sir Panther. Im just a normal adventurer living my life.“

The creature narrowed its eyes a little, not feeling convinced by what the human said to him.

„It does not matter, i will just have to kill and eat you whole. Maybe i will gain that something that makes you so interesting.“

Ethans face paled after he heard what the monster said to him. But he could only stare at it because his body was still a wreck.

He couldn’t move.

The Panther swiped its claw at him.

Ethan closed his eyes.

He accepted death.
