Chapter 3
I woke up around noon and packed all of my things into a small bag made out of rabbit skin.
“The bed was so comfortable that I ended up sleeping till it was late noon, huh.”
I muttered those words as I went down the stairs while rubbing my eyes.
I found Chris sitting at the counter.
“(Isn’t she bored here?) Umm… Chris, I’d like to order some food.”
“Eh? Ah, Kaylee. It’s just you. Phew… what do you wanna eat, Kaylee?”
“(Hehe, it seems like Chris was spacing out.) Hmm… I would like the cheapest dish you got.”
“Sure, I’ll be right back.”
Chris stood up from her seat and went to the door at the back of the counter.
I sat on one of the tables and stared at some of the surrounding people eating here.
“F*ck! I can’t believe our leader made a contract with the lord here.”
“I understand how you feel. Even I wanna go to the front lines and butcher some demi-humans.”
“I really wanna f*ck a girl right now to relieve some of that damn stress!”
Feeling intimidated, I quickly look elsewhere that didn’t involve rough looking people.
“Mama, I wanna go home! I wanna go home!”
“We can’t go back home anymore, Al.”
“But!”
“Haaa~”
I sighed and stopped listening to the people around me.
Even though this place is quite peaceful right now, people are still talking about war.
“Here’s your order!”
“Oh? Thanks!”
“No prob.”
While I had my mind wander around, Chris suddenly arrived and placed some bread and meat stew on the table.
I gave 2 copper coins to Chris as she finished serving me the food and started eating..
“You’re leaving already?”
“Yeah, I don’t really like it here; just look around us. Most of the people here look very depressed and are only talking about war.”
“Well, that is true. Will you ever come back?”
“Of course, umm… Chris, would it be okay for me to think of us as friends?”
“Haha, what are you talking about? We’re already friends!”
“Really? Haa~ I’m so glad, I was quite worried you’d refused me.”
“You’re pretty cute huh, Kaylee.”
When she said that to me, my cheeks started becoming hot from embarrassment.
I averted my gaze from her and said, “I’ll pray that we’ll meet again, Chris.”
“Oh! I’ll be waiting.”
After saying our farewells, I exited the inn and went on a little tour around the village.
In the outskirts of the village, I found a boy with blonde hair who looked to be around my age, carrying a small sword.
Numerous tears fell from his eyes as he marched towards the forest.
I got a little curious and followed the boy.
After walking away from the village, the boy suddenly stopped in his tracks when he judged that it was already quite far.
I hid behind a bush and observed what the boy was gonna do.
Slowly, the boy unsheathed the sword he was carrying with trembling hands.
He had a pale complexion and his mouth wouldn’t stop quivering from fear.
The boy sluggishly carried the sword and placed it on his shoulders.
Understanding what he was going to do, I hastily stood up from the bush and ran towards the boy.
When the boy saw me running towards him, his eyes grew wide and loosened his grip on the sword.
I was successful at stopping the boy from what he was doing, but because I was running so fast, I wasn’t able to stop in time and bumped my head into the surprised boy.
“Ouch~ that really hurt!”
I rubbed my head as I sat on something soft.
“Oi! Get off me!”
As I was regaining my composure, I heard a voice from below.
I moved my gaze below me and found the boy stare at me with an angry expression.
I became flustered when I saw his face and quickly crawled away from him.
By the way, the boy had cerulean blue eyes that complimented his blonde hair.
I stood up in front of the boy and patted the dirt off my clothes before looking at the boy again.
He appeared to be very angry because I interrupted his suicide attempt.
“What was that all about, huh!? Why’d you stop me from killing myself?”
The boy started shouting near my ear, as I regained my composure.
“It’s because you haven’t given up on life yet.”
“Huh?”

“That moment when you were about to kill yourself, the desire to live still was still burning in your eyes!”
“What the hell are you talking about!? Are you saying, I still wanted to live?”
I nodded at the boy’s words which left him quite shocked.
Unlike the time when I committed suicide in my previous life, the boy in front of me looked as if he still hadn’t completely given up hope.
It felt as if he wanted someone to stop him and since I was the only one near him, I decided to be the one to bar him.
“Impossible! I already lost everything! My father was killed in the war and my mother died from an illness! I don’t have anyone precious left in this world! And you’re saying I still want to live!”
“Yes. (Umm, is it really alright to tell a person you just met your circumstances, boy?)
“What?”
“Listen, if you’ve lost everything and all of your loved ones are dead, that doesn’t mean that you should also die. Think about it, if you were dead now and meet up with your parents in the afterlife, would they be proud if the knew you killed yourself?”
I already know what will happen after you die and even I committed suicide in my previous life, but here I am right now, stopping this boy from doing the same thing I did.
I inadvertently made a bitter smile, as I thought about the hypocrisy of the words I just uttered.
“Then what should I do?”
I wanted to tell him, ‘Hell if I know?’, but refrained from doing so.
“Hmm… then why don’t you start by making new connections, find new people to protect and cherish? I think by living like this, you will be able to face your dead parents with your head held high.”
The boy opened his eyes wide in realization.
Seeing his reaction, I made a satisfied expression and left the boy while leaving some parting words.
“Well then, I’m leaving now. I’ll see you if heaven wills it, boy.”
###
After 30 minutes of trekking through the forest, the boy who I should’ve left behind was still following me.
I tried running away and hiding from him, but he would still follow me.
I was getting annoyed and stopped walking.
“Hey boy, why are you following me., huh?”
“My name’s not boy, it’s Keith.”
“... then answer my question. Why are you following me?”
“Didn’t you tell me to form connections with new people and cherish them?”
I nodded at what he said and urged him to continue.
“I’ve decided to form and cherish my first new connection with you!”
“Huh!?”
He then approached me and grabbed my right hand, shaking it.
“I’ll be in your care then… ummm.”
“... Kaylee.”
I was still stunned by his sudden declaration and unconsciously answered him.
“Let’s get along well then, Kaylee!”
Somehow, I unwittingly made a new companion.
