MOTHERLY LOVE
“Ooh, shiiiinny” Maika ogled at a gathering of colorfully dressed people in the town square.
“I wonder why they’re all doing this,” said Zai. “They should get out of the way, if they know what’s good for them.”
“I don’t know. They look nice. One plague and it’s nesting grounds for me.” Maika observed, lightly poking at her ovipositor.
“How many can you make?” Franky asked, beginning to drool.
“My eggs are precious, they aren’t food!” Maika whined.”At least they would be if I could finally lay them,” she added quietly, her antenna drooping.
At that moment, the crowd suddenly stopped milling about and looked attentively ahead. Above the raised platform at the center of it all, the figure of a woman descended from the sky. She raised a hand to point at a strangely well groomed orphan-farmboy reincarnated after a horrible truck accident. “Come to me, my children,” she said, “there is a grave peril, and I have come to bless those pure of heart from my most devout of towns to protect us all.”
“Ooh, is it me?” Franky whispered “Am I the peril?”
“I’m sure you could be someday if you work hard, Franky,” said Zai.
“Swear now your devotion to the purity in your heart, for through that lies your connection to me. Swear now to accept my purity’s blessing to empower your own. Swear to use this power only for the purest of intentions, for only then will our connection truly shine.”

“We swear” Murmured the crowd, as a hemisphere of light pulsed out from the goddess. The people left in its wake glowed in delicate pastel colors; some weakly, and others quite strongly. The orphan-farmboy glowed a brighter yellow than the rest, as the goddess looked on lovingly.
The hemisphere passed through Maika, and she emitted a stunningly bright rosy aura. Franky also began to glow a hungry orange, and Zai oozed a horrifying purple aura. The Goddess looked up at the bright neon colors glowing near the back of the square. “What is this? Who are these children shining blessed colors I have never seen before?” The townspeople, who were currently distracted by the orphan-farmboy, all turned around and murmured.
“If you’re looking for the pure of heart,” said Zai, enjoying his self-assigned role as spokesperson, “you’ve come to the right place.”
“I see,” clearly repressing some concern, “Come closer so I may look at what pure motives may guide you.”
Zai wheeled Maika toward the goddess, dragging Franky along behind him. Maika looked up, widening her many eyes at the goddess, antennas slowly swaying.
“Oh my, what do we have here? Pure… psychotic devotion and pure… hunger. From the baby we have pure…”
The goddess looked into the carriage, repressing a brief gag before proceeding.
“Motherly… love?”
“You are the shiniest.” Maika beamed, bounding out from the carriage into the goddess’ arms.
“Ahh… how sweet-” Maika slipped her ovipositor into the goddess’ chest and began laying her eggs.
The goddess reeled back, screaming a variety of not very pious sounding words as she flung Maika away. Zai pushed the carriage forward, so she could land softly into it.
The crowd paused for a moment in shock, before a wailing came from the goddess. “What have you done to me?”
“Thank you for the blessing,” squealed Maika, “and for nourishing my firstborn clutch.”
“Congratulations,” Zai smiled. “How many of each gender are you hoping for?”
“20, 35, 16, and 4.”
