Chapter 15: Training

Daniel worked with a single minded focus to gain as many of the skills in the guide that he could. He started with ‘Sprinting.’ It was not an easy skill to gain. It took Daniel over half an hour of him working on his form, and many attempts to finally gain the skill. He did not stop to read his new skill; there was more that he still needed to do. He moved onto the next skills he would work on. The obstacle course allowed him to work on Running, Breath Control, Climbing, Jumping, Pain Resistance, and Physical Fitness simultaneously.

To gain pain resistance while doing the obstacle course Daniel had needed to buy this vest that was covered in these razor sharp needles for one thousand coins. He didn't know what the needles were made of but they were able to pierce Daniels reinforced skin which had surprised him. The book had given several ways that he could go about gaining the skill, but this was the one he had decided to go with. The one thing that surprised Daniel about gaining the skill was that just getting hurt over and over again would never lead to actually gaining the skill. To actually gain the skill you had to learn to ignore and block out the pain. Which was what the vest was for. As Daniel ran through the obstacle course the needles would prick his skin which while painful did not actually deal any damage to him. This was supposed to simulate a soldier that had been wounded in battle. He could not stop to get healing, and needed to endure through the pain until they made it to safety.

Daniel did many laps through the obstacle course. Even with ‘Troll Regeneration’ he was sweating hard even with the stamina refreshing effect of his feat. Daniel ran the whole course. He climbed up walls and swung across ropes over mud-filled pits all the while needles stabbed into his body. At the same time Daniel focuses on his breathing making sure he followed the pattern in the book. Every lap like the book instructed he would rest and meditate. He kept the needle filled vest on the entire time. The needles forced him to have perfect posture as he mediated or else the needles would stab into him and break his concentration. At some point Kota who had been silently watching him began to follow him through the obstacle course. This only lasted for a couple of laps since Kota was not built for endurance like Daniel was.

This process went on for a long time. Every once and a while Daniel would get a ding in his mind signifying that he had unlocked another of the general skills he was working on, but he didn’t stop. Daniel had just finished another round of meditation when another ding entered his mind signaling that he had acquired the skill. Daniel was halfway through another lap when the AI broke him out of his relentless training.

“Daniel Martin. As you instructed me to inform you Steve Johnson has awoken.”

Daniel immediately stopped just before he was about to jump across a pit of mud, and ran out of the training room, into the main hall, then into the medical room where Steve was being treated. At the sudden change Kota also got up and ran after him. Inside the medical room Daniel saw Steve sitting up inside the medical pod rubbing at his eyes with the palms of his hands. “Steve! I’m so glad to see you awake.” Daniel called out as he ran up to the groggy man.

“Daniel? What happened?” Steve asked. He sounded confused more than anything else. “I remember falling after the elemental boss threw a boulder at me. I remember casting a wind spell while falling then nothing else. I have several notifications here, one of which says we killed the boss, but I’m not sure what happened. I’m assuming you managed to finish it off?”

“Yeah, I did Steve, but it was a close thing. Too close.” Daniel looked down. A feeling of guilt had unexpectedly overcome him. “After you fell I tried to finish off the boss as quickly as possible to try and help you, but that plan backfired. I took a risk and the boss caught me with a blow that should have been the end of me. It broke probably all of my ribs and flung me probably fifty feet away.” Daniel paused then. Just talking about the fight brought up all of the memories of everything he had done wrong. His thoughts spiraled like that for several seconds before Steve prompted him.

“What happened then? How did you manage to survive and kill the boss?”

“The miners saved me. They dropped a whole section of the path on top of it. It crushed the boss and stalled it for long enough that ‘Troll Regeneration’ was able to heal my wounds enough that I could move and fight. After that, I managed to slowly destroy all of its limbs and then once it was fully immobilized I was able to finish it off. It was a close thing Steve. After the fight I give you all of the healing energy I gained from killing the boss. Then I brought you back through the portal here where the AI instructed me to put you in this pod for healing. Your legs had been completely crushed by boulders and needed to be completely reconstructed.”

“Thanks, Daniel I really don't know what to say or even thank you. You saved my life there. I can’t possibly express my thanks enough.”

“It's fine Steve I’m sure you would have done the same for me if our roles were reversed.”

“I may have a hard time saving you especially with that ‘Troll Regeneration’ of yours.”

Daniel gave a soft half hearted chuckle. “I thought the same before, but not anymore. This dungeon taught me many lessons, one of which is that my feat doesn't make me invincible. If you and Kota hadn't been there those rock lobber elementals would have been the end of me. I had no way to close the distance to them after I used my ‘Heavy Charge’ skill. They were bombarding me at range and dealing more damage than my feat was healing.”

“I hadn't considered that. It sounds like you found the limitation of your feat.”

“I did. I also can't stop thinking about all of the mistakes we made in that dungeon, and how even with our preparations it wasn't enough.”

Steve grew somber, his expression serious, “You're right of course Daniel. If we ever want to enter the team dungeon again we will need to get stronger.”

“I have already been working towards that. I bought a skill book similar to what we had previously found in the shop before we had entered the dungeon. I have been working on gaining as many of the skills as I could while you were unconscious.”

“What kind of skill are they?”

Daniel then briefly went over each skill that was detailed in ‘Virgo’s guide to Skills Every Aspiring Adventure Should Have And How To Level Them.’ He described his training and the process in gaining the skills.

“Those all sound useful, and stacking general skill does sound like a good way to raise our power in the short and long term. Having skills that can be level with effort and without the need for skill points is a good idea.”

“I think we should gain as many general skills as possible before we try entering the team dungeon again.” Daniel said.

“I agree I just don’t think I'm quite ready yet to jump straight back into things. I think I'll do some more research and look through the shop for more skill guides that may be useful.”

“That sounds like a good idea.” Daniel let out a large yawn as he spoke. “I need to get some rest. I have been too worried and wound up to even try and rest. Now that you're awake I think I can finally try and get some sleep.”

“Wait how long have I been out?”

“Just short of eight hours.”

“So considering the time we spent before entering the team dungeon, the time in the team dungeon and the time I was unconscious you have been awake for over twenty four hours.”

As Steve spoke Daniel grew a little defensive. “I had a lot on my mind okay, and with my stats I need less sleep than before.”

“Go get some sleep Daniel. We will talk more after you wake up.” Steve said in a commanding voice. “John Parker should be arriving soon, so you need to be fully awake when he arrives.”

“Fine, fine.” Daniel said. “I'll go get some sleep. AI could you make me a bedroom to sleep in. Oh, and a shower as well. A shower would be amazing after the workout I had.” Daniel’s mood had improved greatly now that Steve was awake.

“Of course Daniel Martin. Your room has been prepared. Please follow the green line to your room.”

A green line appeared on the floor in front of Daniel like you might see at a hospital. “I’ll talk to you later Steve. Please take it easy for now.” Steve just waved as Daniel left the medical room and followed the line to his new room. It wasn't anything super fancy, but it was perfect for Daniel’s needs. It asked the AI for a change of clothes before stripping off his armor and clothes before climbing into the shower. He took a long thirty minute shower, and just let the warm water flow over him.

When he was finally done he left the shower, dried himself off and put on the new set of clothes that was folded and laying on his bed as he emerged. Then he laid down on the bed, his feet hanging off the edge, and finally opened all of his notifications about the new general skill he had gained.

The new general skills were nice. By themselves they weren't very strong, but as he continued to level them and gain more those small bonuses would start to add up in a noticeable way. Daniel also decided to look through the rest of his skills and noticed another aspect he was lacking in. Daniel had a real lack of active skills. Most of his active skills used stamina to activate and with all of his regeneration which refilled his stamina and with these new general skills that would reduce the stamina costs of doing other activities he needed more skills that would draw on his large stamina reserve. The Active ability of sprint would help with that, but he wanted more active class and general skills. The only general skill he hadn't gotten yet was ‘Physical Fitness.’ From his understanding he just needed to stick to the training plan in the skill book for a couple more days then he would gain the skill.

Kota jumped onto the bed with Daniel and layed down next to him. Daniel sighed and dismissed his system screens. He needed to get some rest even if as his stats and abilities grew he was needing less and less sleep with every passing day. Especially with ‘Troll Regeneration’ constantly refreshing his physical condition, but mentally with everything that had happened he was mentally exhausted. Daniel rolled over and patted his companion on his side then settled in to get some sleep. As Daniel quickly drifted off, but as unconsciousness took him in a distant corner of his mind Daniel heard the quiet clamor of whispered voices.

~~~~~~
In his dreams Daniel floated in a black and empty void. Far far away Daniel could hear the whispers of voices in conversation. At this distance Daniel could not make out any of the words, but he could tell that the voices were in a heated argument. He tried to stain his mind to make out the words, but it was futile. It was as if he was standing at the edge of a great cliff and the words were coming from far off in the distance. As that vision entered his mind Daniel was no longer floating in an empty void, but was standing at the edge of the very cliff he had envisioned. Daniel leaned over the edge as far as he could without falling, but the few feet he gained did not help as he still could not make out even a single word. “What are you trying to say? I can't hear you?”
The whispers increased further in volume, their argument even more heated than before, but their words were still just as unintelligible to his ears. He did not know why, but Daniel felt a desperate need to know what the whispered voices were saying. However Daniel stood at the edge of a cliff that seemed to have no bottom and there was no way he could possibly cross this massive chasm to make it to the other side that his eyes could only barely make out at this distance. If only there was a bridge that he could cross.
Like before when the idle thought of needing a bridge entered his mind a broken bridge floated up from the endless abyss below him and stopped before him. It floated over the void with no supports twenty five feet from the edge of the cliff which Daniel stood on. Daniel did not stop to think long about his next move and decided to just act on what his instincts were telling him he needed to do.
Daniel backed up a suitable distance then sprinted towards the edge of the abyss. When he reached the edge he leaped into the air towards the floating bridge. As Daniel soared through the air time seemed to slow and stretch for what felt like an eternity as he reached the apex of his jump. He seemed to hover suspended over the endless void. Then the movement passed and Daniel passed the apex of his jump and began to fall towards the floating bridge. When he landed he stumbled, but did not stop running. A new section of bridge had appeared separated by another gap he would need to jump. A way forward was open to him.
Daniel leapt to the next section of bridge and like before as soon as he landed another section of bridge floated up from the void. This pattern repeated for what felt like an eternity. In the distance he could see the far end of the chasm where the voices seemed to be originating from, but he didn't seem to be making any progress towards the other side. When Daniel thought to look back to see how much progress he had made from the cliff he had started from he saw nothing. The cliff he had started from was gone, and the previous section of bridge had already traversed crumbled behind him leaving him with no options other than to continue forward.
The only reason Daniel felt like he was making any progress at all was because with each passing minute the whispers had continued to grow louder and louder. After what felt like hours of running and jumping across crumbling sections of bridge the whispers had grown deafening in his ears, but he could still not make out a single spoken word. It was as if they were speaking in gibberish or in a language that he did not understand, but that didn't make sense to Daniel. As a hero he had received three feats. Two that he got to choose and a while that allowed him to understand any language. Daniel had researched a little about the feat, but Daniel could not understand why in this place it wasn't working. Eventually the whispers grew so loud that Daniel could no longer hear his own thoughts.
Daniel ran on. Eventually after what felt like days of running the bridges changed. Instead of another bridge a circular platform of stone at least one hundred feet wide emerged from the void below. As soon as he stepped onto the platform two things happened all at once. The bridge he had arrived on fell into the void and a new platform that would allow him to continue forward did not appear. He was now trapped on his circular stone platform with nowhere to go.
At some point on the run the whispers had stopped growing louder, but had been a constant deafening clamor. The noise made it almost impossible to think, and now with no way forward and not knowing what else to do Daniel walked to the center of the platform he stood on and screamed out as loud as he possibly could into the void, “WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO TELL ME!” Nothing happened for a moment and with all the noise Daniel couldn't even tell if he had spoken at all. Then suddenly the voices stopped all at once and the silence was deafening. Daniel almost thought he had gone deaf, but he could still hear the hammering of his own heart in his ears and his own labored breathing.
Daniel stood there in total silence for several long minutes waiting. He was not willing to break the deafening silence that seemed to hover over the platform like a weight. Then a single soft voice spoke. It was male and had a lyrical quality to its speech. “Seek out the great unanswered question and the answer that has been lost to time--” Its words were quite almost a whisper, and Daniel almost didn't hear them through the ringing in his ear, but even with all of that Daniel could feel the weight of eons behind the words. Before Daniel could ask a question of the quiet voice it continued speaking.
“A question that has been asked since the very dawn of the system itself, and an answer that even the ageless historians of Elgenbar have only found hints of the greater truth. Only myths and legends still whisper of it, but even they only contain hints of what has been lost. Seek the truth and the knowledge you shall find will give you power, unlike anything you currently possess or could dream of existing. Of course that's only if you survive long enough to make use of it. Many before you have tried, and most died after gaining only a kernel of the whole truth. Others gave up after realizing the cost of what they sought.”
The voice faded echoes of its words surrounding Daniel. He was hesitant to speak, but he had to ask and Daniel had a feeling that it might be the most important question he had ever asked. “What is the question and where do I start?”
Daniel got a feeling that the unseen speaker was watching him and silently judging him and found him wanting. “You are not worthy to walk this path. Many men and women better than you have walked it and died faster than you.”
Daniel once again found the courage to speak to the voice, “I do not know how I can prove my worth to you other than by walking the path.”
“You are of course correct. It is impressive that you have managed to survive this long even if it has been sheer dumb luck.” There was a slight pause then the voice continued speaking. “I shall answer your questions starting with the second. You must start by learning about the origins of the system and people who made it.”
The voice fell silent, seeming to be partially unwilling to speak further, but Daniel needed answers so he decided to risk prodding the voice. “And what about the first question?”
“To know the answer to your first question you must know that there is not just a single question, but two. The first is only a fragment of the first, but it has been asked at least once by every single person who lives under the system. ‘What is the system?’ This question is a diluted version of the real question that only the most powerful people alive even know to ask.”
There was once again another pause and Daniel held his breath unwilling to risk the voice not giving him his answer. The voice paused for several minutes seeming to weigh his options, but it eventually continued speaking once again.
“‘What is ‘The Crafters Legacy’ and how does it relate to the creation of the system itself?’”
With those words, the voice left and Daniel knew instinctively that it had. “What is The Crafter Legacy?” Daniel spoke aloud. “This Feat seemed like more trouble than I originally thought that it would be. Not only does it try to kill me every time I use it, but it is also somehow related to the creation of the system itself. This is just great.” Daniel just sighed. The voice was right Daniel wasn't worthy; he had just gotten lucky.
Moments later the platform of stone Daniel stood on began to fade away, and when it did Daniel opened his eyes in his bedroom that the training room AI had made for him. Daniel was wide awake feeling completely refreshed and the memory of his vivid dream was still fresh in his mind. The more Daniel thought about the nature of the dream the less curtain he became that it had been only a dream. Moments later a notification entered his vision which he began to read.
Quest: The Origins of the System: The system is ancient and powerful beyond understanding. Little is known about the people who made it and why. All knowledge about its creation has been lost to the ever marching progress of time. All knowledge except for that which is rumored to be contained in ‘The Crafters Legacy.’
Objective: Learn more about the system and ‘The Crafters Legacy’ feat which you are the current holder of.
Reward: Unknown
Daniel layed in bed and read the new quest. It wasn't a task that he would be able to complete any time soon. Even with the hints the quest and the voice had given to him he still had very little information to go on. He assumed some of the answers he would need to seek were buried deep within ‘The Crafter Legacy’ itself, but he had no way at the moment to even begin delving into the depths of his feat to gain any such information.
Daniel sat up and swung his legs off of the bed and stood. Upon moving Kota also awoke from his dreams, did a doggy stretch and also hopped down from the bed. Daniel raised his arms above his head and leaned back stretching his back. It was time to get back to work. Daniel had new skills to learn and level up, but first he needed to go find Steve. As Daniel left his room he saw that he had another unopened notification. With nothing else to do as he walked he opened it up.
Notice. The Second of the 10,000 heroes, Jin Seungri ‘The Victorious Gladiator’ has fallen in an instance of the team dungeon. The weight of responsibility falls more heavily onto your shoulders. His loss will become a burden for all those Heroes who remain.
It was a sobering reminder to Daniel of just how real the stakes were for them. It could have been Steve’s name that appeared on the notice or his for that matter. This new reality wasn't a game and the stakes for losing would not only be his death but also for deaths of an unknown number of other people that it was not his job– his duty to protect.
With the notification his mood had significantly dropped. Daniel decided to go to the shop first to purchase breakfast. It was nothing fancy, just some eggs and toast, but it did make Daniel wonder just where the food had come from. The system wasn't even technically fully integrated into the system yet, so it was very unlikely that one of the other heroes had placed the item to be sold in the shop. It was very likely he was eating the egg of some alien creature which was surreal to think about. They were good eggs though Daniel had to admit. After he was done eating Daniel stood to go find Steve, but to his slight surprise Steve found him first.
“Daniel I looked through the shop and did quite a bit of research on the wiki, and I found a skill that I think will fix your problem with the psionic awakening. I will fix a different problem that I didn't even know we had until I discovered the skill.”
Steve was almost vibrating with excitement as he smiled at Daniel. For his part Daniel just raised an eyebrow at Steve, “That's great, but what's the name of this skill?”
“Oh, right.” Steve said, looking slightly abashed, but his smile quickly returned a moment later. “It's called ‘Party Interface.’ It's an amazing skill and also very cheap to buy from the shop as a skill gem. The only downside of course is that it would take up one of our limited skill gems slots but I promise you that its benefits far outweigh that downside. Apparently almost every single adventurer across all known universes uses this skill which is also the reason why it's so cheap. The market is absolutely flooded with the skill.”
Daniel just smiled and once again prompted Steve for more information. “So, what does the skill do exactly?”
“Well, for starters the piece of information about the skill that will help you the most. There is a small chance that when a person absorbs the skill gem that it will be able to unlock their latent psionic power. For you who has already partially gone through a psionic awakening it should be able to give you that little push over the edge.”
“That is amazing, but that sounds like a secondary benefit of the skill, what is its main purpose?”
“The true benefit is that even for those people who gain the skill and don't undergo a true psionic awakening they will still unlock some minor psionic abilities through the use of the skill. At level 1 of the skill you are able to form a psionic link with others who also have the skill. This allows for telepathic communication with party members, and also gain a basic sense of a party member's physical condition. They can sense roughly how much health, stamina, and mana someone has left.
“That does seem great, but that can't be the only reason why the skill is so widely used right?”
“You would be right. At level 1 the skill can only form a link with 4 other people. At higher levels that number increases, but it also allows individuals to make psionic contracts with one another for mutual protection without the threat of being betrayed at the first sign of good loot. This is the main reason the skill is so widely used. Any adventurer who doesn't possess the skill is considered untrustworthy. Because of how cheap it is, even the lowest level of adventure should be able to easily afford the skill. Most adventuring companies require you to have the skill to even be able to join.”
“How much is the skill anyways?” Daniel asked.
“Around one thousand coins per skill gem.”
“That definitely seems very cheap considering that I have spent more coin than that on some of my equipment.” Daniel was growing excited about the fact that very soon he could finally choose his next specialization. “Can we go buy the skill now?” Daniel said eagerly.
Steve gave Daniel a knowing smile then reached into his pocket and pulled out two rough cut gems. “I already bought them. I figured you would want to finish your psionic awakening as soon as possible.”
“You didn't have to buy the skill for me.” Daniel said as he took one of the skill gems from Steve.
“Just think of it as a small thank you for saving my life in the Team Dungeon. Besides you also spent five thousand coins on that skill guide that I am also using so we still aren't even.”
Daniel’s good mood was slowly drained away as Steve brought up how close to losing they had been in the team dungeon. In a more serious somber tone Daniel spoke. “Did you see the new notice about another hero dying?”
Steve just nodded matching Daniels solemn air. “I did.”No other words needed to be said on the subject. They both knew just how lucky they had been.
Daniel decided to change the subject back to the discussion of the skill gems, but a heavy weight still hung over them like a cloud. Their conversation wasn't nearly as light-hearted as before. “How do we go about absorbing these skill gems anyways?”
“All you have to do is hold the skill gem to your forehead, and the process will start.”
Daniel nodded. “Thanks Steve. I’m going to go back to my room and learn the skill now. When I return I should hopefully have some good news to share.”
“Good luck.”
Daniel nodded and left Steve heading back to his room that he had only left just under half an hour ago. Sitting crossed legged on his bed Daniel used his new meditation skill to calm his mind. When Steve had said the skill gem would transfer the knowledge from the gem directly to his mind he had felt a slight burst of panic. This skill gem would be nothing like the information ‘The Crafters Legacy’ shoved into his mind or at least that's what he told himself.
He had prepared for this. Through the use of his class skill he had augmented the strength of his mind as much as he could. He had literally augmented his mind in such a way that it was specifically better at absorbing the effect of information transfers. There was no reason why he should be feeling this way, but the thought of absorbing the knowledge contained within this gem was making him break out in a cold sweat. He did not want to experience that pain ever again. After a couple more minutes of meditation Daniel reached up and pressed the gem to his head.
Daniel tensed his whole body waiting for the pain to arrive, or for something to happen, but nothing did. Daniel removed the gem from his forehead and saw that the inner light that had once been within the gem was gone. His mind felt slightly different as if it had a new sense he didn't have before. A moment later several new screens entered his vision confirming that what he was feeling wasn't just a figment of his imagination.
