Chapter 18 Dave’s

Chapter 18 Dave’s

I wake up 2 hours later when the sun casts its rays into my face. Opening my eyes to the world I squint trying to adjust my enhanced visual sense to the morning light. Standing up I stretch before beginning my morning workout, going through the various motions I randomly change the power of different senses at different times.

It must have looked ridiculous to anyone watching as I stumble around trying to do my exercises. Continuous changes to the stimulants being inputted into my brain caused me to take an extra half an hour as well as producing motion sickness and a headache. But now I feel more confident in changing my senses and adapting to new stimuli.

[I don't have anything planned for today so I guess I will see what Dave is doing] With this in mind I walk to his house while sharpening my various knives and buying some flavoring for some stalls.

Reaching the house after two hours of walking and shopping I knock on the door and wait. After a few minutes, a girl opens the door, takes one look at me and slams the door in my face. [Ok then] What follows is loud yelling from inside and the door opens again but this time it is Rebecca at the door “What do you want?”

“Hello to you too Rebecca I came to see Dave, is he available?” [The fuck are you doing with two girls in your house at the same time Dave? damn ladies man] she says nothing and looks at me for a few seconds before her face lights up like she has had an epiphany before quickly inviting me in “Yes hello Jake come on in Dave is in the living room”

“Thank you, but it's Jacob,” I correct as I walk into the house following behind Rebecca. “Ah yes, of course, it is,” She says distractedly as she walks into the living room and up to Dave and whispering in his ear while glancing at me. Looking around I see that the living room is a small space with a sofa that has room for two people to sit comfortably and a chair in the corner which Dave was currently located.

On the coach is the ‘slam door’ girl from before who was staring at me without blinking [is there something on my face?] not knowing what to do I stare back at her meeting her gaze creating an awkward silence with both of us staring into each other's eyes.

This continues for about a minute as Dave and Rebecca continue to whisper. The awkward silence between me and 'slam-door girl' grows as I repeatedly have to remind myself to blink. [Is this normal? It didn't happen in the church, but then again I don't think that is a good point of reference.] I was very confused until Dave finally stops whispering, which I am very kindly ignoring, and walks up to me. “Jacob, it's good to see you can I talk to you in the kitchen?”

“Yeah, sure that would be great.” Breaking eye contact I Walk into the kitchen. Dave turns and looks at me “Would you like to go on a date...”

“Sorry mate I don't swing that way”

“...With Lucy, my cousin?”

If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

“Ah that makes more sense, now please explain”

“Rebecca and I were going to go on a date today but my cousin is here and I was told to keep her company and to not leave her alone. So that was going to ruin the day for us until you showed up. If you go on a double date with Rebecca and me, while you are with Lucy, I will use some of the money I have been saving to pay for your dinner. What do you say? It could be fun.”

Dave seems off somehow his mannerisms are slightly different and he does not smell the same. But I have only met him once and we were in the city's sewer, so what do I know. And who the hell turns down free food.

“Ok, first you will have to clarify what a date is, I have a vague idea but I want to make sure and before you say anything like ‘How could you not know’ I literally live and sleep on the street. Second, at some point in the day, you will take me to a gambrels fighting ring [heard of it while I was pickpocketing] and bet the money I will give you on me, it was why I came here in the first place.”

“You actually live on the streets?”

“Yup”

“Have any family?”

“Nope”

His face lit up oddly before he replied with “Wow ok, a date is when you have a nice time with a person, and I guess we can find a fighting ring if you want.”

“That's pretty much what I thought. alright then, I agree to come along with you guys and keep Lucy Company, but I want that food.”

“That's great. Rebecca, Lucy we are going out,” Dave yells to the others as we enter the room. It does not take long for everyone to get ready as Dave goes up to tell his parents we are going and soon we are outside and walking along to the market. Dave and Rebecca’s flirting was cute at first but quickly became sickly and annoying so I walk a few paces behind them. Lucy must have come to the same conclusion as she joins me after a few minutes. “So Lucy anything you want to do today?”

“Well I like walking in silence, preferably with strong or attractive people but I guess today I am not so lucky.”

I snort in response. [Ouch, this is going to be a long day]. Walking mostly in silence, we stopped at several food stalls as we went along and Dave brought me food from each. My head started to feel cloudy and my movements started to slow. I tried to ignore it and soon noticed that Dave’s parents are following us, even with cloudy feeling in my head. Putting the following up to parental concern I didn't think about it too hard.

Once it is lunchtime I feel sick but my brain is so cloudy that I can't fix my body. At this point, Dave asks me to follow him for some “guy talk” as we leave Rebecca and Lucy to go behind a store.

When we are behind the store I am confronted with hooded figures as Dave blocks the exit. [What’s going on? I can barely think straight.]

“Sorry about this Jacob, you seem like an ok guy but we were never truly friends. Well, you might have been with Dave but he was taken yesterday. hehe” After saying this ‘Dave’ changes into a middle-aged man with a dirty beard and yellow teeth.

“ But look on the bright side Jacob, you won't be alone once you are sold as a slave, you will always have your master. That is after you are beaten into submission and magically branded of course, haha, maybe you can find Dave again but I doubt it” Those were the last words I heard before one of the figures hits me over the head and I fall into darkness.”

“Why do you always feel the need to explain to the merchandise Max? It is a waste of time,” complains an older man with greasy hair who is pretending to be ‘Dave’s' dad.

“Sorry but you know I love the look on their faces when they find out what is happening and besides they are far too stupid to figure it out on their own.” He grins, exposing his yellow teeth.

“You should go back to your new whore, we will take his body to the smugglers to get him out of the city and into his new ‘home’ so we can get paid. We don't want any suspicion until the trail is cold. Then we can stop pretending to be these fucking morons.” Complains a woman pretending to be ‘Dave’s' mum.

"Yeah, yeah I will get going, mum."

With that the man impersonating Dave changed back to his disguise as he walks back on the streets, planning to impersonate Dave until the trail of the smugglers is cold.
