Binary Bloom

Binary Bloom, Pirates Hideout

A series of interconnected caverns within a colossal, derelict space station, orbiting Aethel.

Role in Story

The Rusty Bolt's hidden base of operations, offering a precarious sanctuary amidst the treacherous environment of the Junkstorm. It's a place to rest, repair, and plan their next heist, constantly vigilant against scavengers and the ever-present dangers of the Junkstorm itself.

Unique Features

• The Junkstorm Pirates have cleverly repurposed sections of the derelict station, creating a network of interconnected tunnels and compartments.

• A hidden docking bay, shielded by a cleverly disguised hatch formed from scavenged hull plates, provides a berth for pirate ships.

• A makeshift repair shop, cobbled together from salvaged technology and scavenged parts, manned by a small crew of human mechanics

• A hidden comm station, painstakingly assembled from salvaged components, allows the hideout to receive intel and contact allies.

Description

The station clings to a precarious existence within the derelict station, a testament to the pirates’ resourcefulness. Flickering bioluminescent lights, salvaged from forgotten corners of the station, cast an eerie glow on the cramped tunnels. The air is thick with a toxic cocktail: the metallic tang of welding fumes mingles with the stale stench of recycled air, the acrid bite of ionized particles from nearby plasma storms, and the faint odor of ozone from sparking wires. Patches of exposed rock and makeshift metal walls, cobbled together from scavenged materials, line the corridors. The ever-present hum of the ventilation system struggles to keep the air breathable, a constant reminder of the harsh environment outside.

Five floors, about 10-12,000 inhabitants

Sights

• Piles of spare parts and scavenged tech – the spoils of past raids that could not be sold on the black market – are scattered haphazardly throughout the tunnels.

Sounds

• The constant thrum of the ventilation system struggles to overcome the ever-present hum from the Junkstorm itself – a cacophony of groaning metal, plasma discharges, and the distant rumble of unseen behemoths shifting within the debris field.

• The occasional muffled roar of engines when a ship arrives or leaves, barely audible from the hidden hangar.

• The occasional, unnerving scrape of metal against metal from outside, a chilling reminder of the scavengers and other dangers that prowl the Junkstorm.

• The crackle of static in the comm station adds another layer of tension to the ever-present sense of unease.

Smell

A noxious blend of stale air, burnt oil, ozone, the metallic tang of exposed rock, and the acrid bite of ionized particles creates a suffocating atmosphere, a constant reminder of the harshness of the environment.

Notes

• The hideout is a constant work in progress, with every successful heist by one of the pirate crews bringing new parts and resources to further fortify their hideout.

• The derelict station offers some protection from the Junkstorm's dangers, but malfunctions and breaches are a constant threat. The crews must be ever-vigilant, prepared to patch leaks, reroute power, or even abandon parts of the base if the station's integrity is compromised.

• Despite the harshness of their environment, the crews takes a grim pride in their makeshift home. It's a testament to their resilience and resourcefulness, a sanctuary carved out of the chaos, offering a place to plan their next daring heist and dream of a better life beyond the Junkstorm.
