Prologue

You'd think people would normally never go into the dark woods alone that are rumored to be full of demons, yet here I am, alone, in those woods. I wanted to know if the rumors were true. My best friend, Ben, had warned me not to go alone, so I agreed to go with him, but I ditched him at a fake meet up spot. Why did I do that? I have no idea. I guess I just wanted to prove to myself and him that I could do this without help. The woods were cold yet humid, making everything feel as if it were wet. As I walked, my white, thigh-length dress stuck to my legs, which made me feel more uncomfortable than I already was.

It didn't take long before I could hear twigs snapping behind me. However, I never saw or sensed anything. Once I was deep enough into the forest to the point where I couldn't see sunlight, I stopped walking. I could feel something watching me from behind now. The feeling sent a shiver down my spine. Another snap from behind me, and I turned around, pulling out a sword I had hooked on my belt. I expected to see another person, possibly Ben, trying to scare me for leaving him, but instead, I saw something else.

It wasn't human. I wasn't sure what it was, but as soon as my eyes focused on it, a wave of terror washed over me. I stood there frozen as the black goop it was covered in dripped to the ground, making the grass and leaves under it look as if they had been covered in black tar. There was a low growl coming from somewhere on the creature, but I couldn't figure out where. As soon as it showed its rows of long, sharp teeth, my paralysis disappeared, and I turned away, running as fast as I possibly could.

“Nope, nope, nope, not doing this today.” I thought as I ran.

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

I heard something slither behind me on the ground. I didn't care, though. I couldn't look back in fear that it would be right there and catch me. Something wrapped around my ankle and pulled me down, causing me to land on my face, a sharp pain spreading across it before I managed to flip onto my back. I was dragged towards the creature across the wet ground, twigs and rocks scratching at any exposed skin and ripping any loose pieces of fabric from my outfit.

While being dragged, I tried reaching for anything I could see, including my sword, which I had dropped when falling. I stopped moving, but the behavior of the creature confused me. I continued to struggle, trying to reach my sword, and could feel my arm at its limit. Even if my arm popped out of its socket or broke, I didn't care. I couldn't just accept this thing overpowering and killing me, if it would even do that. I could feel the handle with the tips of my fingers as it moved closer. I just had to stretch out a little more.

My mind was all over the place. What was it going to do to me? Could I reach my sword in time? Could I even kill it? I hadn't felt fear like this before—never this intense. I kicked at the creature, sending some goo flying off in different directions. I used the short gap to kick myself forward and grab the sword. But as I turned back to free myself, a blinding light came from above, followed shortly by a blast of heat. I felt the pressure on my leg release, and I pushed myself forward towards a tree.

I looked up to where the creature was and saw a fire. It seemed as if it were coming from a person. The person, from what I could see, had blue hair flowing around them. The rest of their features were drowned out by the light. I stood up, mesmerized by the light, but avoided getting any closer than I already was. The heat was intense—more than normal fire. The light started to die down, and that's when I noticed the horns—black horns twisting up from their head.

By the time the creature's tar body was reduced to nothing but a sizzling puddle on the ground, I tried to thank the person,

 but they were gone.
