Ch-21, The 4 Elements

Ch-21, The 4 Elements

“Sir, what are we supposed to do next” Delsa asked when the class for the day was about to end.

“I told you didn’t I? Go to the 1st floor library”

After saying this he gave everyone their maths assignment for the day and tapped his staff, disappearing off to another chair no doubt.

We completed the vector questions in a hurry and then went to the first floor.

The whole school was basically a huge cube, with a squarish hallway on each floor. One side of the hallway lead to classrooms and the other to different libraries assigned for different things.

As we approached the library door I noticed it was closed.

The sound of something scratching the ground came from the inside.

*Knockknock*

The scratching sound immediately stopped.

“You can come inside” a female voice sounded from the inside.

I entered first, and as soon as I did an intense smell of iron filled my nose. I looked and a lady, maybe 25 or so, was sitting on the ground while looking at a paper with an intense gaze.

A nail was moving on a metal plate that was filled with a pattern that made me confused about the a lot of things, some lines had bumps in the depths, some split in 2 lines of varying depths, there were smaller patterns on some of the lines, while some lines split off into many smaller branches that thinned slowly.

We continued to watch the needle stabbed the plate in some places and cut it in others.

The needle finally stopped, it flew in the hands of the women who put the needle in the overcoat that all mages except Edward seemed to be wearing.

“What do you want?” She looked at us with the eye that seemed to indicate what real insomnia looked like, two big dark circles were visible under her eyes and I worried she might drop dead if she didn’t sleep right now.

“some magic circles for initiate mages”

“You people did that assignment already? Are you the group- 2?”

“Yes?”

“That makes sense, you would expect reincarnators to have more mental fortitude than kids.”

Just how many people knew about the reincarnation!?

“You know?” Adiel asked a little shocked.

“I guess it makes a lot of sense that the teachers will be informed about that” Adiel mumbled before the teacher in front could answer.

“What does that do?” Delsa asked while pointing at the metal plate.

“Glad you asked! Come here” She us near the metal plate and made us sit down.

“You know how gravity works?”

I nodded.

“Good, now what this does is turn off the gravity field in the area of about 3 by 3 by 3 meters.”

Saying this she took out a mana core, which was atleast 10 times as big as the goblin cores I fed Eleven, and put it in the small hole that had been made in the middle of the pattern/mana circle.

*wrrrrrr*

The plate started vibrating and suddenly I felt blood rush to my head and my body suddenly felt really light.

I pushed the ground with my hand and slowly I started floating.

I kept getting higher and higher slowly.

I felt fre-

*Thud*

“Ouch!” all 3 of us suddenly exclaimed as we fell down from varying heights.

The mana core she had put in the middle of the plate had vanished, turned to ash.

“Its just that it doesn’t last very long”

It looks like she is kind of an air head, not that it’s a big deal. Its much better then people who used to scroll through tiktok throughout the day back on earth.

“What did you want again? Right, mana circles. What element do you all want?”

“Can we have one of each?”

“Nope”

Delsa looked at the librarian with a questioning gaze.

“You shouldn’t have been taught about this yet but you can only use 1 element as a mage apprentice, and even as a quasi mage you can only use a limited amount of elements that depends on your path to power.

This is why the school policy is to let kids focus only on 1 element before they become quasi mages.

You should go in the library and read about the various paths to power throughout the history, that should give you a good enough idea about what element you want to focus on.”

“What are the options”

Adiel is asking some real questions here.

“The same pair of four, why do you ask?”

“I was just wondering why there are only 4 elements, isn’t their something like lightning, ice, light, dark and plant type elements?”

“You just completed the assignment too fast, if you had completed it when the majority completes their you would have been taught all this by your class teacher, in your case the principle”

She conjured 2 chairs and made us sit down before taking out a marble board and a chalk.

“So the universe is filled with mana” she said while drawing a circle.

“You can liken mana to the blood of the universe, We have had contact with a few other universes throughout the years and the worlds which don’t have mana either have another energy that tears the universe apart after some time or they are so unstable that they explode. We have contacted moe then 10 universes throughout the years and 8 of them had mana, one had another energy and one was on the verge of exploding.

This another energy is called dark energy by the earthlings, from the nearest universe to ours”

My god… So the reason I couldn’t find magic on earth was due to me being born in a fucking universe that had dark energy? What are the chances? Like 10 percent??

“Now in the universes that have mana, if I don’t complicate things too much, mana behaves like everyday phenomena.

In short because there are 4 fundamental forces, gravitational, electro-magnetic and strong and weak nuclear forces, their are 4 corresponding elements. Earth for gravity, fire for electromagnetic, wind for weak nuclear and water for strong nuclear.

So what happens is that if you want let’s say ice element or metal element, they can be derived from water and earth element respectively. Though if you work hard enough you could derive metal element from any element.

As for light element it can easily be derived from any element, darkness is just the absence of light and lightning is just and impractical element to derive, though if you wanted to you could derive it from each element except earth.”

She looked at us after completing this lecture and saw 1 face that understood everything and 2 faces that were pretending that they understood everything.

“Not going to lie while it was understandable I have long forgotten what strong and weak nuclear forces were, but I guess I get the jist of it.” I said and Adiel nodded.

“Now go and come after thinking about what element you want.”

Delsa stood up and started walking towards the door when she noticed neither me nor Adiel was following her.

“I want fire”

“And I want air” Me and Adiel spoke in rapid succession.

“You sure”

We both nodded.

“Here you go then” Saying this she walked up to a bookshelf and took out 2 books which she handed to us.

Transformation of mana to fire mana and a collection of pure mana and fire mana circles with derivations of their working.

The name was a mouthful.

“These books also contain some really useful spells of other elements that we thought have to be taught to every mage. Also, remember to not try each other’s book, as when you draw mana circles your mana slowly becomes attuned to that element and starts to reject other elements.

You two take this” she said while handing us a bag each.

“These are all the materials you are going to need for a couple hundred spells. And lastly, I would advice you to improve mana control as much as possible.”

“As for you, come back here after you decide what element you want” saying this she waved her hand telling us to get lost and that’s what we did.

We exited the room.

“I am going to the library” and off Delsa went.

“I guess I am going too” And he went behind Delsa.

Ah the blossoming of love, always so wonderful.
