Chapter 3: A Strange Feeling
Bucky Finch was settling into his life in Oakridge, enjoying his job, his friends, and especially the occasional run-ins with Stacey. But one overcast morning, he woke with a sense of unease that he couldn’t shake. It wasn’t the usual worry he felt before a presentation or a deadline. No, this was something deeper, a strange foreboding that gnawed at him as he made his way to work.
He tried to shrug it off, telling himself it was just nerves. But as the hours ticked by, the feeling only grew stronger. Every creak of the building, every beep of his computer, seemed louder and sharper, keeping him on edge. His teammates noticed he was unusually quiet, but Bucky brushed off their concern, laughing it away. “I guess I didn’t get enough coffee,” he joked, trying to mask his growing anxiety.
The uneasy feeling lingered through the afternoon, settling like a weight on his shoulders. He was so absorbed in his thoughts that he didn’t notice someone walk up behind him until he felt a gentle tap on his shoulder. Startled, he turned around to find Stacey standing there, her bright smile cutting through the gloomy haze that had hung over him all day.
“Hey, Bucky!” she greeted him, a playful spark in her eyes. “Are you free tonight? A few of us are going out to a party. Thought you might like to come along.”
Bucky hesitated, his heart pounding for reasons he couldn’t quite understand. Part of him wanted to turn her down, to retreat to the safety of his apartment and shut out the strange feeling that had haunted him all day. But Stacey’s enthusiasm was infectious, and he didn’t want to let her down. So, with a nervous smile, he nodded. “Yeah, I’d like that.”

Later that evening, he met up with Stacey and a small group from work at a lively club downtown. The place was packed, with music pumping and people laughing, creating an energy that pushed away the dark cloud that had been hanging over him. Bucky began to relax, enjoying the warmth of the crowd and the easy banter with his friends.
Stacey was by his side most of the night, introducing him to people and laughing at his jokes, even the awkward ones. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt this carefree, surrounded by people who seemed to genuinely like him.
As the night wore on, the crowd thinned, and Bucky and Stacey found themselves outside on the club’s balcony, gazing over the sparkling city lights. Stacey looked up at him, her eyes soft and thoughtful. “I’m glad you came tonight, Bucky,” she said quietly. “I’ve been wanting to get to know you better.”
Bucky felt his face flush, and he managed a small smile. “Me too. This… all of this… it’s been amazing.”
They stood in comfortable silence for a moment, the city humming around them. Then, with a gentle laugh, Stacey reached up and kissed him. It was soft, tender, and left Bucky breathless, his heart racing as every trace of the strange feeling from earlier dissolved, replaced by a warmth he hadn’t known before.
As they pulled back, Stacey smiled up at him, her hand still resting on his arm. “Let’s make this the beginning of something good, Bucky,” she whispered.
He nodded, unable to find the words but knowing he’d never forget this moment. They stood there, wrapped up in the warmth of each other’s presence, feeling like the rest of the world had faded away. For the first time, Bucky felt a sense of belonging he’d never imagined, and he knew, with Stacey by his side, this new chapter was only just beginning.
