CHAPTER 2

New beginnings

For the first time in his life, Bucky Finch was leaving his hometown behind. The job at TTechFutures required him to relocate to Oakridge, a vibrant city two hours away from Springford. With a mixture of nerves and excitement, Bucky packed his belongings, said a tearful goodbye to his parents, and boarded the early morning train that would take him to his new life.

As the train sped through fields and forests, he felt a strange sense of freedom. This was his chance to start over, in a place where no one knew his name or his history. For Bucky, who had spent so many years in the shadows, this new beginning felt surreal.

When he arrived in Oakridge, the city felt like a breath of fresh air. Oakridge had a youthful, buzzing energy, with coffee shops and art installations on every corner, a stark contrast to the quieter streets of Springford. His new apartment, a compact but cozy space provided by TTechFutures, was only a short walk from the office, nestled in a neighborhood bustling with young professionals.

Bucky's first day at TTechFutures was a whirlwind of introductions, meetings, and training sessions. To his surprise, his new colleagues were welcoming and warm. He was assigned to a small team of developers, each with a unique personality and sense of humor that made Bucky feel at ease. The team leader, a cheerful guy named Ryan, quickly took Bucky under his wing, helping him settle in and navigate the company.

Over the next few weeks, Bucky began forming real friendships with his teammates, a feeling that was entirely new to him. The jokes and banter were lighthearted and genuine, and for the first time, he didn’t feel like he was the target of a joke — he was in on it. His confidence grew, his laughter came more easily, and he finally felt like he belonged.

One evening, after a long day of coding, Bucky's team decided to grab dinner at a lively restaurant near the office. They squeezed around a big table, ordering plates of food and laughing loudly as they recounted stories of bugs they’d accidentally introduced in their projects. As the night went on, Bucky felt himself relaxing, letting his guard down around his new friends.

Then, in the middle of a story about one of his early programming blunders, Bucky noticed her. Stacey. She was sitting with a group of friends at a nearby table, her laughter ringing out above the noise of the restaurant. Stacey had a bright smile and an energy that seemed to light up the entire room. Her eyes sparkled with intelligence and mischief, and she spoke with an easy confidence that captivated Bucky instantly.

One of Bucky’s teammates, noticing his gaze, leaned over and whispered, “That’s Stacey. She works in our Marketing department. Smart, funny, and way out of your league, man,” he teased, nudging Bucky with a grin.

Bucky laughed it off, but his heart was racing. He knew his teammate was probably right — Stacey seemed like the kind of person who was fearless, someone who wouldn’t even notice a quiet guy like him. But that night, for the first time in his life, Bucky didn’t feel entirely invisible. His friends treated him as one of their own, and for a brief moment, he imagined what it would be like to talk to Stacey, to make her laugh the way his friends made him laugh.

Over the next few weeks, Bucky often found himself crossing paths with Stacey at work. She was always surrounded by people, her warmth and charisma drawing others to her effortlessly. He admired her from a distance, too shy to introduce himself but secretly hoping she’d notice him one day.

And then, one afternoon, fate intervened. Bucky was working late on a project, hunched over his computer and lost in code, when he heard someone clear their throat nearby. He looked up and felt his breath catch. It was Stacey.

“Hey, you’re the new guy, right?” she asked, a friendly smile on her face.

“Uh, yeah. I’m Bucky,” he replied, trying to keep his voice steady.

She nodded, glancing at his screen. “Working on something top-secret?” she teased.

He chuckled nervously. “Just some bug fixing. Nothing too exciting.”

Stacey raised an eyebrow, her smile widening. “I think bug fixing is exciting. It’s like solving a puzzle, right?”

Bucky felt a spark of courage and smiled back. “Exactly! It’s frustrating but… kind of satisfying.”

They ended up talking for longer than he’d expected, their conversation flowing easily. Stacey shared a few funny stories from her time in marketing, and Bucky found himself opening up, his usual shyness melting away in her presence. He couldn’t believe how easy it felt to talk to her, how she seemed genuinely interested in what he had to say.

As they parted ways that evening, Bucky’s heart felt lighter. Meeting Stacey felt like the beginning of something special, something he couldn’t quite name yet. He knew he had a long way to go before he could call her a friend, let alone something more, but for the first time, he felt like it might be possible.

With his new job, new friends, and a new sense of purpose, Bucky Finch was starting to believe that this fresh chapter of his life held far more than he’d ever dreamed.
