Chapter 6. My vocal chords UGH

Chapter 6. My vocal chords UGH

Author notes, then Rant time :p (there's a line where the story starts if you want to skip it)

Thank you mio for pointing out the mistake, originally in that chapter I was going to put "Thank you Niles for noticing that!" But changed it to what it is. It is now fixed :)

@ zawilson441 I found your review title very amusing XD

As for whether or not he becomes a wimp... Well he might complain but quivering in fear all the time isn't really his personality, but you have to understand (well you don't HAVE to) he is in a different world. That means he is encountering many unknowns, and guess what is one of many of mankinds greatest  conflicts in literature and real life even? Man vs unknown :)

Plus... He's never going to be op, he's not gonna just train for a month, then be able to murder everyone with a flick of his finger.

That's ridiculous. He won't be op so, a healthy dose of caution helps with survival situations, especially in a world full of unknowns such as in this story. :)

Now for the rant

A little look into my mentality,

I hate seeing randomly OP Main characters in almost all young adult fictions I see, and I REALLY dislike when "feelings" cause a spontaneous power up, so I am letting you guys/gals know that WILL NOT happen in my story. I feel that it cheapens the story and that it takes away from the building of the character. I mean really, how the heck can you get to know the character and relate with them, when the character is uber powerful, has a perfect personality, and nothing ever truly goes wrong for the protagonist? Plus that instant power up when they feel a bit frustrated/ sad or angry? I understand them doing a risky maneuver/spell when they have nothing to lose but just getting a random power up? No. Just no.

That's dumb, I don't care if you have mana or not, that's bull crap. I realize things like adrenaline affect your body, but doing something like making magic do the same thing to your body, and not having some sort of rebound from it (or death) just really cheapens it for me.

Also I dislike plot armor, anyone in my story has the capability of dying. If they do something stupid, and get a deadly wound? There will be no miracle cures, they will die unless healed, and even then, they may not live (cuz of infections and things like that). Also btw, there are no healing potions. Maybe mana potions (will have restrictions), but no health potions (maybe for preventing infections and such but no instant heal or regeneration)

Magic is not as overpowered in this story as others. It follows rules, and if you break them? The magic doesn't work and/or rebounds, usually in a lethal way. But anyways, the point is, what I am try to do is make it realistic (in a fantasy world lol), so the more cautious tend to live longer. Some times it is worthwhile to take risks, but don't be foolhardy would be the main rule.

I moved my familiar from the middle of the field because it would not be proper of me to leave him passed out in that spot, so I picked him up, he was a slight bit lighter than I thought, and carried him to one of the nearby stretchers that were for when people expended a bit too much mana. I think it should be fine?

I know that the rune is burned into the skin, but it should not have been so painful for my familiar. I felt slight pain when it was burned into my hand but I was told that was normal. Why was it so painful for him? He was screaming in pain and strongly struggling against the bindings....

After my classmates all summoned their familiars and left, I ask the professor why it hurt him so much.

"There are many variables that could have caused that. It could be it had a resistance to summoning, that the invocation didn't completely fit the creature, or that the summoning itself cost too much mana and end up costing the creature as well." He said pointedly, then continued,

"There is much we do not know about summoning, since the heroes from two centuries ago were the ones to discover the technique. We have gotten a bit further in summoning studies since then, but many have devoted their whole life to it, and haven't learned much other than refining the process itself. So it could have been anything." He said, then continued

"The rune I saw appear upon yourself and the familiar you summoned is similar to a hero's but isn't one. I am not familiar with it but I shall look into it." He said and then walked off while muttering

"How intriguing."

That... does not really help, but it shall be what it shall be I guess.

I look at my familiars sleeping face and think about what I should do next.

Ugh.... Where am I? All I remember that constant falling *shivers*, passing out, waking up to strangely dressed people, that girl saying random crap, her touching me, then passing out again. This better not become a habit.

I sit up and look around. What is going on? I wondered this because I am sitting on a bed with many furs on it, there is no one else in here, and the room I am in is highly decorated similar to well... a nobles would be in the Victorian era, except one major difference, the devices floating around the room and sitting on the furniture.

Looking around a bit, still a little shell shocked, I start thinking about my situation, and remembered the pain I felt when purple hair girl touched my chest. Remembering that, I look down at my chest.

....there's a tattoo...? It looks like a fox running around a sword, with a giant shield behind both of them. All around it a see a whole bunch of symbols I can't read that form a pentagram. What the heck....?

My thought is interrupted as the purple one walks into the room, I mean really, who the heck has purple hair? ...she does apparently.

She sees that I am up again and stops in her tracks. For a few moments I just sit and stare.

...and she stares back. After a minute or so of this she tries to speak but I don't understand a word of what she says. She looks a bit worried when she notices my look of confusion and repeats herself. Still seeing that I don't understand, a look of comprehension appears on her face. Her hand starts glowing, and even though my body isn't moving itself away like it was last time she did this, I start backing away into a half crouch and my ears fold back like a cat's. She notices this and continues, albeit slowly.

"Back off." I try to say but it comes out as a bark sounding noise? (sounds like this at 3 min but deeper ) Even my vocal cords changed?! Why was I able to talk normally at the goddess' place then? What the fuck.

She heard the noise looks at me with a conflicted look and then  backs away. I stare at her for a little while longer and then she sighs and walks out. After waiting 20 minutes, I peek outside the door she went out of and immediately a glowing hand lands on my chest scaring the crap out of me. I immediately hiss and jump back, to my dismay and pain, and land on a chair falling over it. OW!

I was just coming back from class and noticed it... no, I mean he, my familiar, was awake. I tried to initiate conversation with him but i was met with a look suggesting I was speaking a foreign language to him. I tried again thinking about how he probably just woke up... But he truly did not understand what I was saying...

The rune should have fixed any problem with language barrier, shouldn't it have? Then what the professor said earlier reminds me that maybe I didn't put enough mana in?

I bring mana to my half of the rune covering it and walks towards him. He notices this and backs away while going into a defensive position... Like a cat? ...he thinks it's going to cause pain...

I try to convey that I'm trying to help, he doesn't seem convinced, while getting closer.

.....h.he barked....that's so....c.cu... No, snap out of it. He's not a pet, I can't rush at him and cuddle him.

*Sigh*

he clearly doesn't want me near him. I walk out and stand next to my doorway to think of how I can fix this problem. After 23 minutes he peeked out the door right as I was going to use magic to open it.

I feel a slight tingle run across the mark on my hand as I see him leap backwards while hissing loudly. I hear a crash and cringe.

....that sounded painful....

"Are you alright?" I ask, afraid he injured himself, despite him not knowing the language.

{Niles' PoV}

Owwww. That freaking hurt. Didn't realize I was that big of a scaredy cat... I mean fox. What was that she was trying to do? It looked she tricked me at first but she looked shocked too!

"Are you alright?" I hear the voice coming from purple hair and just blankly stare. What just happened, I can understand her now?

... Just what is going on...?

Noticing my facial expression changing, she asked in a shocked tone,

"Can you understand me now? I feel my mana drain but... Anyways can you?" She starts to trail off into thought, but cuts herself off and asks again.

I try to say "yes" but end up barking again, growl out of annoyance, and then nod.

She hears the growl but ignores it.

"In my excitement I forgot about the jump you just did. Are you quite alright?" She asks with a worried expression on her face.

I try to get up, but my leg hurts when I stood on it. I whimper, what I can't help it, as I get up and look at my leg. Ouch, it has a slight gash above my... paw. Why are my legs fox-like at the bottom but my hands are the same other than the claws? Got to keep my thumbs, guess that's what matters...

She sees the gash and picks me up. Woah, she's picking me up like nothing! Hey! Quit it! I... bark, ugh... out a warning for her to stop and she just ignores it. I try to struggle out of her grip but she's freaking strong!

"Now I have to bring him to the clinic again.." I heard her mutter.
