Side-Chapter 1: Maya

Author's Note: Don't read this. This chapter would have been longer until I noticed I just retold the entire story through a different POV. So honestly just wait for a real chapter.

Side-Chapter 1: Maya

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Elven village I had lived in had hidden itself from other humans. Sadly however humans weren’t our only enemies.

We Elves have always lived peaceful lives but because of a few mistakes from the few, we the many, must pay. My village had been neutral from the start of the war or so I had been told by my mother. This had happened several years before my birth, and for Elves who have such longevity , a long time was significantly longer compared to humans. We had thought humanity had long forgotten us. We failed to realize that the supremacist Elves had declared war not just on humans but on all other non Fairy descended races.

I myself do not know much. My education had been cut short. Elven basic schooling ended when an elf was 30. After that we had other higher advanced schooling. I had been taught only the very basics of survival. Anything about worldly affairs was beyond me. At that time our village was attacked by Men who appeared to be human, but were tainted and held a far darker  origin. Their fangs easily sank into our warriors necks. They’re faster and stronger than any normal human.

The only ones doing any considerable damage to these inhuman creatures were our hunters.I could do nothing as spells and chants were skills taught at later dates. I was only 16 so my mother told me to gather a few things and run rather than confront these monsters. At the time I refused and took my bow and arrows to the village front line. However my arrows were unable to cause much damage. The creatures got ever closer. I was scared no I was terrified. When I ran and they smiled malevolently and chased.

In the end I escaped while my mother held them off. I cried while I ran. I cried when I was out of breath. I cried when I rested. There was no point during that day where I wasn’t crying. However I then realized that my tears would do nothing. At the time the point of my existence was survival in the forest day to day. I should have listened to mother. I thought of suicide but was too scared.I had been living in this forest for about a year more  or less.

That day was no different. I was out hunting. Looking for any traces of something to kill.

“Um Hello.”

Frightened I turned. This was the first sentient being I had seen in the past year and it just had to be human.I did not know if humans still held a grudge. He put up his hands in the air.

“Ah, I’m sorry for scaring you.”

Luckily, I spoke some human and a little elven but I could still not understand his words.

He bowed.

“You nearly scared the soul out of me!” I said but I doubted he understood me.

“Um, I’m sorry but I don’t speak elven.”

He responded but his words still made no sense.

“You are weird,” I said. I had drawn my bow. I felt threatened by the look on his face. He was looking at me weirdly. He seemed to think of something and reached for something in his bag. In panic I let loose my arrow. He started crying and wailing. It made me feel terrible.

“This will hurt a bit!”

“Wha.. wait a bit. AAAAAHHHH!”

“HOLY MOTHER OF FIRETRUCK!”

I then bandaged his eye as he fell unconscious.

I carried him to the small camp site I had been living in for the past year. I let him down under the small shelter I had made. I then started to cook using some leftover ingredients I had from yesterday's catch.

“Oh man that hurt.” He woke up while I was cooking.

“Ah you're alive.” I smiled glad that he was fine. He scowled and gestured towards his bandaged arm.

“You’re an elf. Don’t you have any healing magic?”

“Stop complaining,at least I’m not charging you for the bandages.” I stood up and grabbed a rather large book from the bag of my possessions that I had taken from my home.

“Here read this and learn some language.” I said as I handed the book over. I then recalled he probably doesn’t know how to read and so I sat down with him and pronounced every single letter. He took out a colorful journal and started writing down  what I assumed to be notes.

After teaching him how each letter was pronounced I returned to the campfire. After the meat had been cooked I offered him some.

“Huh? Oh, thank you.” he  said in his mother tongue.. He then flipped through the book quickly.

“Thank you.” he read from the book.

I smiled and said”You’re welcome.”

I offered him water and I lied down. I gestured to him that he should sleep next to me. Normally I wouldn’t be one with such behavior but over the night the fire always turned off and it got cold quick.

.”It’s fine I’ll sleep here.”

“It gets cold.” I exaggerated and shivered while rubbing my arms.

“Li...Like I said I’m fine.” a gust of chill wind came as he said that. It seemed that had changed his mind.

“Um sorry.”  he said as he lied down.

“Just don’t try anything.” I said as I fell asleep for the first time not fearing the darkness of the forest.

The next day I had gotten up earlier to start the fire once again and preceded to cook breakfast.

“Morning.” he said that as he raised himself.

“Yep,good morning ,” I responded and handed him the broth I had made for breakfast. After it looked like he had finished breakfast, I pointed to myself”Maya.” with this he should be able to understand my name. It seemed he understood me as he mimicked my motion.

“Enzo Dicaprio of the Dragna family.” It was fairly long and so I concluded him to be a noble of some type.

“Well then do you know how to use the bow,Enzo?” I motioned towards the bow I had. He shook his head. At Least that gesture I understood was no.

I then spent the morning teaching him the basics of archery. At noon I’d hunt and we would enjoy dinner in the evening. This went on for a few more days. He would follow me and I taught him the basics to surviving until it seemed Enzo was tired of being useless.

“Me man help.” he said one day. At first I hesitated but in the end I allowed him to come with me.

We walked a while away from the camp. While my elven ears might not be as sensitive as other races it most definitely surpasses human ears albeit little. I heard a low growl.

It looked like a tiger but a more grotesque version. It had an overbite with 2 horns protruding from the side of it’s head. In it’s mouth was a boar. One of My daily prey.

I could not recall this creature's name but I knew it wasn’t an opponent I could kill with my arrows.

“Let’s hope we can run faster.” I said as I shot an arrow at the beast. I then turned around and grabbed Enzo. We ran as the flashing arrow blinded the creature for a moment.

The beast roared and we ran even faster. I don’t think either of us knew where we were heading but it didn’t matter. I cursed my sense of direction as we arrived at a cliff that overlooked a lake.

I never learned how to swim and I was also afraid of heights. This is where I would die.

Slowly it walked towards us and I looked down the cliff.

“Jump to water!” Enzo  said but I  desperately shook my head in rejection. Then he pushed me off the cliff and I fell. I moved all four of my limbs in vain and screamed as I sank. In retrospect that was probably not a good idea to scream while underwater. In the end I closed my eyes and hoped I’d get to see mother and father soon.

I felt someone’s lips on my own. They beat my chest. I couldn’t complain in my dream like state. Then I coughed up water. My eyes opened and saw a relieved looking Enzo over me.

We didn’t move far from the lake and decided to start a fire to dry ourselves off. I used some wind magic to dry ourselves. He continued to play with the kindling of the fire while the silence continued. Neither of us had anything relevant to say.

“Go to village?” he said as we sat there. Did he not know about human-Elven relations.

“You’re not from here?” I asked.

“Well no.” he answered

“My mother said that years ago a group of elves proclaimed their superiority as a species and attacked and enslaved the other races. The human kingdoms resisted and fought. The elves lost and retreated. The humans then persecuted us Elves regardless of our factions.” I explained to him.

“human language speak?”  he asked.

“We’ve been speaking Human language. My elven is only at a child’s level after all.”

I told him about my real age and how elves had a rather laid back attitude. I was no different than a child compared to humans. Elves spent years doing basic schooling. Not to mention each tribe had its own history and dialect.

In the end I pointed in the direction of a village I had seen from far away.

“So then humans have elf slaves?” he asked me while scratching his head. I suppose it was a hard topic.

I nodded

“How bout you pretend be my slave?”

“Yeah it's not strange for a noble to have one.” she responded.

And so we started our journey towards the closest human village. While we walked we chatted to improve my speech skills. He asked questions about this world and immediate world.

Sadly   I was unable to be of much use in world information.

After a week we arrived at the edge of the first. He stepped forward and walked and noticed that I wasn’t following. He Looked back and I  hesitated. I was scared to be honest.

“Let us go!” He seemed to encourage me.

I looked at the forest. Perhaps this is my punishment. I looked at him and walked forward.
