Chapter 3: First morning in the village

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was shaken awake. Usually this would be the part where I’d think I was still back home and tell my mom to let me sleep for five more minutes but it had been around a month since I was last in my own bed and that habit had died.

“Give me five more minutes mo.. Maya.”

“It’s already late.”

I looked at my wrist watch and on it’s display was a quarter to 9 a.m. Well I had fixed the time on the watch to the most accurate hour. So give and take 2 or 3 hours.

With a large sigh I pushed myself up. Maya was there staring at me. I dressed up in a rough tunic made from boar leather that maya had made. One of the first things I did was store my clothes in my backpack. Well I had entered the village in my modern clothes to leave an impression but I didn’t want to wash them too often since it was my only set of real clothes. I also wore leather boots rather than my shoes this time. I Had actually walked the journey with these leather boots so I had broken them in quite a bit. I think the only thing I kept on were my trousers.

I stepped into the main room of the village heads hut. The hut had only one room which he had given to me. Although I wanted to refuse I didn’t because well I wanted to sleep on some type of bedding despite the fact that his bedding was nothing more than well it was nothing compared to the modern world.

The room was stuffy and the smoke from the hearth made my eyes water. Stirring a pot above the fire was a woman much younger than the Village head. This was his wife Jessandra. A 10 year old girl was using a loom in the corner of the hut. This was their daughter Jess.

“Good morning.”

“Mornin’ M’lord.”

Hmm Lord sounds strange but I’m not gonna complain about being treated with respect rather than by repulsion.

“Yes Morning.”

“Breakfast is ready M’lord.”

On the table in the room was a wooden bowl filled with a stew of vegetables accompanied with black rye bread. I hadn’t ate vegetables in a while but for there to be no meat was saddening.

I sat down to eat and noticed Maya standing in the corner. I was about to tell her to sit down and eat but remembered how elves were treated by humans here. it seemed she had been given bread at least. As I began to eat Gendred entered the hut. He sat down on the table and joined me in breakfast. For some reason neither his wife nor daughter joined us at the small table.

“So you’re up M’lord?”

“Ah yeah but it seems you’ve been working.”

I could tell due to the smell and the dirt on his person.

That’s right the pig that normally was kept inside the hut wasn’t inside at the moment.

“Well The thing is Gendred. Well I don’t have a home or any funds.”

“I see, so you’ve been abandoned by your family.”

“Ah well not exactly.” I had trouble explaining my situation. I couldn’t outright told him I came from another world now Could I?

“Oh a fallen Noble huh. I understand this war has caused misfortune to affect even men of high birth.”

A war? Oh that’s not good. I just hope it won’t reach this village.

“So then about a home…”

He interrupted me.

“Well, if you’re fine with living in a hut.”

Hmm to tell you the truth I did not want to live in a hut. I also had nothing more than a vague idea on how to construct a modern home. This was a problem. Let’s see a modern home needed a foundation first of all but where was I going to get concrete? Second of all the concept of electricity I understood only on the basic level. Actually now that I think about it I know nothing of the basic things all of us living in a first world country enjoy such as plumbing and infrastructure.W hen was the last time I used a toilet? although such things as an out house exist but that wasn’t something I’d grow fond of.

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

“If you could help construct a hut I’d be grateful since my skills are rather lacking in that department.”

Gendred nodded

“Yes I assumed so but it won’t be free.”

Oh that’s right I have no money.

“Ah, Well I wasn’t planning on getting a charity. So if maybe I could help with your labor or something.”

First of all I had no “real” skills that could provide an income. Damn why did life seem so much harder.

————————————Gendred’s POV——————————————————————

His clothes seemed well-made and it was a fashion I had never seen. It was like a cloak with a hood and his pants were blue and not to mention his shoes that were black and white. His clothes looked different than other lords but it was definitely something those with money would wear. He was also rather tall and broad shouldered with black short kept hair.

“This Humble one’s name is Gendred. How can I help you?”

I spoke politely as I could. There was a beautiful Elf next to him although she lacked a collar but only those with high statuses could afford to keep a beautiful elf such as her.

“Give me House and food.” he said in broken verunusian. His speech sounded like a child. perhaps he was not fluent in verunusian but his attitude was certainly one of a high ranking Noble.

He cleared his throat

“My name is Enzo Dicaprio and I would like a place to live.”

It seemed he had been travelling and ended up lost and was now seeking shelter. Well it wasn’t odd for noble children to want to adventure.

In my adventuring days I had met many like him who were accompanied by party members who had actually been hired by their parents. Usually they’d realize how dangerous adventuring is and would go back home but some died or ended up loving the adventure.

It was rather late as the sun started to go down so I offered him my own bed in my hut and slept elsewhere. The next morning at dawn I woke to start cultivating the fields and then about 3 hours later at around breakfast hour I returned to well eat breakfast obviously. He sat there eating at my table.

“So you’re up M’lord?”

“Ah yeah but it seems you’ve been working.”

That’s right I had just been working for a bit after all.

“Well The thing is Gendred. Well I don’t have a home or any funds.”

Ah, so it’s like that huh. He might be from the southern Kingdom since he doesn’t speak verunusian. Technically that was an enemy kingdom but I really didn’t care for that.

“I see, so you’ve been abandoned by your family.”

“Ah well not exactly.”

He seemed like he wanted to hide his past probably due to embarrassment.

“Oh a fallen Noble huh. I understand this war has caused misfortune to affect even men of high birth.”

“So then about a home…”

A noble like him might not enjoy such a hard life such as ours.

“Well, if you’re fine with living in a hut.”

He seemed to be thinking about it.

“If you could help construct a hut I’d be grateful since my skills are rather lacking in that department.”

I nodded

“Yes I assumed so but it won’t be free.”

A spoiled brat like him might misunderstand and might not want to pay us.

“Ah, Well I wasn’t planning on getting a charity. So if maybe I could help with your labor or something.”

I see. Basically he had nothing to pay us back with. I looked at the elf and wondered how much money he’d get if he sold her. Probably enough to become a minor noble. Our king of Verunusia seemed to had a fetish for killing elven women so they were always in demand. It was sad but their was nothing to be done about it. I doubted he wanted to sell his last possession. Perhaps he might have even developed feelings for his slave.

“Alright then I’ll teach you everything about being a villager.” I said to Enzo. I had no son as of yet but I felt that if I had one it would be something like this. I smiled at the thought.
