Chapter 1: Lifeguard
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next day I woke up to the smell of something cooking.
“Morning,” I said to the elf lady
“Uoy ot yad doog.” she responded while stirring the pot over the campfire. It was a simple broth made from the leftover meat from yesterday. I couldn’t recognize any of the spices she had put in it but it smelled good enough.
She handed me over a wooden bowl filled with this broth. Yesterday I read the book but she taught me the pronunciation. It was a pain going over each letter but I remembered the sound of each letter so far.
It was fairly simple since humans can only make so many sounds with their mouths. It sounded english enough though.
After finishing breakfast the Elf beckoned me over. She pointed to herself and said” Maya.”
I mimicked her and said my own name.
“Enzo DiCaprio of the Dragna family.”
Well I doubted if she even knew what a mafia family was but it was more out of habit that I said that. My father and older brother joined and I had too but I continue school unlike my brother. I didn’t want my mom in tears after what happened to rick. I was her baby boy after all.
“Enzo helb og sgniht ekam ot woh wonk uoy od?”
By the tone of her voice I realised she was asking me something. She motioned towards the bow she carried. I shook my head. Archery wasn’t something taught in public school after all.
She nocked an arrow and showed me. afterwards she handed the bow to me. I Emulated what she had done. After she corrected my hands I let go of the string and the arrow flew. I had aimed towards the trunk of a nearby tree but missed. It took me a while but I was able to handle the bow and able to hit targets within a small radius of me.
The bow was short compared to the longbows I’d seen on television. It took some strength to pull it but if a girl like her could do it then I’d be a disgrace to the family if I couldn't shoot a simple bow.
Well to summarize I spent the a few days practicing how to use the bow and how to start a fire. She also made me skin whatever she had caught while hunting. Still she went hunting by herself. As a man I didn’t feel good having her provide the meat while all I did was skin it. So after I was confident enough with my bow skills I followed her. She looked at me for a while deciding whether or not I might be a bother.

“Me man help.” I said in her language. Maybe me saying that had been the deciding factor and she nodded.
We walked a while away from the camp. She suddenly stopped and her ears shook. It was a very cute gesture but the atmosphere didn’t allow me to think more about it. She was tense and I was tense too. When I was about to say something to her a shadow jumped out from the bushes.
It looked like a tiger but a more grotesque version. It had an overbite with 2 horns protruding from the side of it’s head. In it’s mouth was a boar. One of Maya’s daily prey.
I ran or at least that’s what I wanted to do but I was petrified with fear. It’s stare was was frightening. I’ve met some scary people with murdering gazes but they were all trash compared to this creature. To it we were no different than boars.
Maya said some unintelligible words and shot an arrow towards it. Before the arrow hit the creature she turned to me and pulled me along. We ran and I saw a bright flash behind me.
The beast roared and we ran even faster. I don’t think either of us knew where we were heading but it didn’t matter. Maya continued to grab my hand and lead us towards a cliff. At the bottom was a lake.
Despair was on her face and then the beast appeared from out of the trees. Maybe it was just me but it looked like it was smirking.
Slowly it walked towards us and I looked down the cliff. It was about five stories of a fall. Not that bad
“Jump to water!” I said but she desperately shook her head in rejection.
Maybe there was a dangerous creature in the water but from what I could see it was a serene lake. I grabbed her and threw her. There weren't any other options. I’d rather face what was in the water at this point.
I jumped off the cliff and into the water. Luckily it wasn’t my first time so I wasn’t terribly afraid. I sank into the water with force and swam back up. I opened my eyes and looked for Maya but she wasn’t there. I could see ripples in the water where I assumed she had landed. I swam closer and dived into the water. She was deep in the water barely moving. I don’t think she saw but I continued swimming closer to her. By the time I arrived her eyes were closed.
I grabbed her and I swam up while holding her. I put my arm under her armpit and supported her head. The shore seemed so far away but I continued and I reached it after a few minutes. Thank god I was a certified. To think working one summer as a pool lifeguard would come in so handy now.
I performed CPR on her. It didn’t occur to me that it was the first time I touched a girl’s lips who wasn’t my mother. Finally after what seemed like an eternity she started coughing and vomiting out the excess water.
