I was summoned as a Dragon?!
Chapter 4: Overwhelming Force

Chapter 4: Overwhelming Force

Author Notes:

I tried putting the POV at the start of each part. Tell me what you think, I suppose?

Part 1—Jason

I was really expecting the dragons to all die here.

There were about 85 Dragons that were able to fight from the start, but that number was quickly dropped to just under 20.

This doesn’t include the dragons too much younger than myself, of course.

Still, I did not expect the remaining dragons to imitate my attack. They couldn’t get the same heat or power, but they didn’t need it.

With large exploding balls of flame flying everywhere, it decimated the human army.

That said, it left the dragons in a exhaustion. They couldn’t fight much more, and a few of them still died in the process.

One of the older dragons issued an order of retreat.

The dragons gathered the young they could take, and took off.

Hmm? That ending seems a bit rushed, doesn’t it?

Well I guess dragons aren’t stupid; just a bit—inhibited. Fighting a losing battle is silly.

Still, I wanted to see more.

But I at least understand human magic now.

Fire, Water, Earth and Air magic.

Huh, isn’t this a bit cliche? Well I did see some healing magic, but I don’t know what that falls into. There’s probably more magic I’m not familiar with. Perhaps I’ll ask a human.

Well, after receiving that many casualties, it seemed the humans were ready to leave too.

Hmmm? They’re not leaving?

Ah looks like they captured at least 3 of the younger dragons who tried to fight—was that their end goal?

Well, I guess if you failed summoning a single strong dragon, gather an army of regular dragons, huh? It would take a while to tame and raise them but the end result would probably be better anyways.

And like I thought, the army progressed towards the plateau that the dragons had made their camp—seriously, what do you call a group of Dragons?

A flock? A pride? A pack?

—I’m just going with “camp”, because it would be too generous to call it a village.

Well, I decided to watch from a high cloud, after I saw the other dragons leave…

But—There’s a Knight chick who keeps looking over her shoulder towards the cloud I’m in.

Does she know I’m here?

Well that’s fine. Judging by the power of these humans, it doesn’t look like they have anything that can reach me up here faster than I can dodge.

Still…

—This kinda rubs me the wrong way, ya know?

Don’t get me wrong—I don’t have any emotional attachment to the other dragons, despite the fact that my emotions seem to be mostly intact. (At least I think they are?)

But I kinda feel like I my home is being invaded by a bunch of thugs.

Even if those thugs have fancy shiny armor and represent a Kingdom—you get the idea.

At least back home I can refuse a cop who wants to enter my house unless he has a warrant.

Eh? They’re going up the mountain from the left side?

Well that’s natural, it looks like the easiest path up—

—Why am I bothered by that, I wonder?

Oh… That’s why…

Get the fuck away from that—!

Part 2—Magic Knight

Our casualties were as one would expect after facing off against dragons. Though the Commander earlier said there would be hundreds, most of them were cubs barely fit to fight. Three of the ones that did attempt to fight were captured, however we couldn’t capture any more than that, as they all decided to retreat.

Our scouts reported there would be more cubs up ahead, who didn’t participate in the battle, so we began our trek towards the mountain. The majority of our forces were left behind to be treated for injuries, while the rest of the survivors continued towards the intended plateau.

Using Earth magic, we found the easiest path for our forces to scale the mountain. Even so, if the dragons were to return now, we would certainly be at a disadvantage, with our lack of footing.

Still, I continued to be vigilant, looking back towards the Blue Dragon who had hidden himself among the clouds. Even now, I still see his bright blue scales that show themselves as the clouds flow around him.

Perhaps it’s intuition, but it feels this one doesn’t care for us. If he did, he would have already attacked. Probably.

I still question myself for not reporting his appearance to a higher officer, however.

“Hey, we found a cave!” My wind magic carried the shout of one the soldiers further ahead shout out—somehow, I have a bad feeling about this—like a premonition or bad omen.

“Wha—it’s treasure!” I hear another shout, which seemed to echo. As I hike up along the path stabilized by Earth magic, the entrance of the cave comes into view from my angle.

Of course we’d find something like that. Dragons are long known to have a desire to collect precious metals and jewels. Though some legends exaggerate how much a single dragon will hoard, if there’s a large gathering of dragons, you’ll find a stash of their collective treasure not too far away.

—Ah! I got distracted!

I turn around to confirm the feeling I had—as I thought, the Blue Dragon is descending!

Greedy thing—it doesn’t participate in the battle, but as soon as we touch its treasure, it comes into to attack!

I draw my sword, and prepare my magic—as I do, the soldiers around me look back, and spot the dragon before drawing their own swords.

I feel that we should be fine against a single dragon, even with the limited space—until I spot the blue ball of fire, headed for the people further up ahead.

The earth mages manage to bring up a barrier in time, but the impact creates visible cracks while the scorching heat nearly vaporizes the rest. The earthen wall has become red hot, and seems to even be melting.

—It would take a high level mage to combat this dragon!

Before I know it, the molten rock that was used to construct the wall, is then propelled into the sky at high velocity. Of course, I forget that we have plenty of those among our ranks. If it’s just one dragon, this much should be fine.

Then I witness something I have only heard in legends—

—Holy Fire.

Part 3—Jason

Hmmm? They managed to block my blue flames huh?

Eh? Oh shit shit shit!

I barely managed to dodge those bullets there—that’s pretty smart; using earth to block my attacks, and then shooting it at me like that.

Eh?

Fuck-fuck-fuck! That’s hot!

It seems my flame actually melted the stone a bit—even though I dodged the “lava-ball”, bits of it flew off, and stuck onto my scales.

Of course, using my magic I pushed the molten bits of stone off of me.

Still, they kinda pissed me off.

—Ok. Time to reveal my secret weapon!

I may not be some kind of genius or anything, but I do remember the majority of what was taught in class.

If I ever see him again, I’ll thank last year’s science teacher.

—First, I open my inventory, and quickly extract a mass of metallic powder, and then purified the oxygen in the air, like I usually do for my fireballs.

Upon ignition, three white, burning balls of flame are formed, and I quickly repel them forwards.

Magnesium—Last year, my science teacher brought in several ribbons of the stuff, and let us burn it over a bunsen burner. Magnesium burns white, and I think I remember the teacher saying it burns at a few thousand degrees.

Until now, I’ve been using the hydrogen and carbon in the air to create propane and ethane as fuel.

However, I’ve also been gathering magnesium through the use of my magic, and turning them into fine powder to maximize their use. You can probably call it a trump card?

But the mages down below are pretty quick witted too, huh? They already build up a new wall, using the hard earth of the mountain, while another set of mages layered the earth wall with a water wall—that’s a bad idea by the way~

Don’t you know? Magnesium turns water into its base components, so water just makes the flame stronger—as evidence, the white ball of fire exploded with even more ferocity than it normally would have!

The earth wall was melted through of course.

I do have enough magnesium for a few dozen fireballs like that one, but I decided to save up—collecting and filtering earth is super tedious, you know?

From there, I fired another volley of blue fireballs, but most of them seemed to be block. As I’m trying to get people away from my precious, I don’t even pay attention to the fact I just killed a bunch of people for gold, silver and shiny metals.

They would have killed me for less, you know?

Still, I think I killed a good number of them; not only the ones who were around the earth wall, but the explosion also caused boulders to fall, and crushed a number of the soldiers on the pathways down below.

I try firing towards areas I don’t see any mages, but only about a third of my attacks make it through—the other two thirds are blocked by what I assume are Magic Knights, and wind mages that can apparently fly.

Well shit guys, if you want me to use up my trump card, I just might.

Well, at this rate, I’ll run out of mana before anything, so I decide there’s really no other choice.

Once again, I conjure up a ball of white flame, before spinning it, and thrusting it forward as fast as I can, towards a group of soldiers on the cliff-side.

I’m still pretty high up, but even from here I can hear the explosion I created, and see that I wiped out a large number of them.

If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

Hmm, maybe if I had participated in the battle earlier… Well I didn’t feel I needed to. It was that kind of feeling from seeing two other people fight, and you just happen to be acquainted with one of them—would you risk your neck for someone you hardly know or care about?

No matter, from up here they can’t really touch me—but I don’t have enough mana to go on forever.

Still, I shoot forth another ball of burning magnesium towards the knights closest to the entrance.

Well, at least I get to keep the shiny things to myself, right?

Part 4—Magic Knight

Our forces were being decimated!

The single dragon stayed too far for our archers to even touch, and our mages couldn’t use magic fast enough to hit him.

The situation was further complicated by the fact that half of us were unable to retreat. The majority of our mages who specialized in Earth magic were already wiped out, and the White flames destroyed our escape route down the cliffside.

It didn’t help that even with water, the Holy flames merely grew stronger.

There were legends that the Heavenly God Ethorn once used White Holy Fire to clear away even his most powerful enemies. Flames that could not be defended against, and would burn all away until they were content.

No one here thought they would ever be on the receiving end of such a power.

How does one defend against a fire so hot that it melts earth, so fast that the wind does little to stray its path, and so ravenous that even water—rather than quelch it—excites it further?

Before I knew it, half of our forces were nearly completely annihilated.

The dragon seemed to have little interest in our injured who were left behind, and only attacked those who advanced towards the plateau.

Was that it? If we fall back, will it cease its attacks?

But we can’t simply run away. We’d be shamed until our graves and beyond—if this were a normal dragon that is. But after seeing this much, I’ve confirmed that this is the summoned dragon from before.

Heroes, when summoned into this world almost always have overwhelming power compared to most people. To add to this, they will continue to grow beyond the limits of others, even passed their youthful prime.

A dragon bestowed with such power could no doubt perform this sort of spectacle.

The Knight Commander likely knows as much, but because that was our target from the start, he won’t retreat.

But what can we do?

We have sent out our mages capable of flight, but they are not fairing so well. I thought it would be best for them to try and ground him, but it seems this dragon is smart enough to resist such magic.

But it seems he’s at least having trouble keeping up with our mages—almost as if he’s not use to fighting while flying. He’s yet to strike down one of them, but similarly they can barely harm him.

This would be a good time to retreat, but instead the Knight Commander pushes us ahead while the dragon is distracted. He likely wants to get us onto the plateau where we’ll have better footing—but if we retreated instead there was the possibility the dragon would merely ignore us afterwards, and the commander likely realized this as well.

If the dragon were to retreat now, the mission to capture him would have failed—a summoned dragon bestowed with the blessing of Heroes is much more valuable than a few hundred dragon eggs, or even the lives of this force. “We’ve already lost too many—a few more won’t matter,” is likely the sort of bet that our lives have been wagered on.

It’s a war potential we simply can’t deny.

Part 5

Mmmm…

I was really quite enjoying myself for a moment there.

Then came the flying mages, who also carries with them boulders and such.

Aren’t humans not supposed to fly? Isn’t this cheating!?

Get out of my skies, guys!

Well… They’re not my skies per se.

Also, did that rhyme?

Wow, that boulder almost hit me—gotta stop dozing off like that.

Still, these guys have also been trying to change the wind pressure under my wings, and even blow me to the ground. Of course, that sort of thing won’t work on me, who at least understands a little bit about air pressure.

I wasn’t taught much about it in school yet, but I’ve been doing a few tests since I got wings.

Doing this much won’t make me fall guys~

Well, it seems to understand that much. Still, I’m having trouble actually attacking them—they’re amazingly fast, and I can only see in a couple directions.

I’ve received a number of cuts from their wind blades, but my skin seems to be holding up.

Despite all this time, I’m still not completely use to flying—especially not something as thin or fast as these mages. Griffins are about my size, and are all rather thick with their lion-like bodies, and don’t have the kind of maneuverability these mages do, so I don’t normally have issue taking them down.

But like I said, these mages are amazingly swift, rotating around me, and keeping out of my sight where I can burn them.

If I wanted to escape, I could do that easily, but somehow attacking these guys is rather difficult.

And I started off so good, blowing things up.

—If this goes on, I’ll probably bleed to death.

Ow-ow, shit, another wind blade hit my leg.

They’re keeping their distance, so I can use my claws on them, but they can still propel wind blades at me until I’m tired. If I try fighting them on the ground, it just gives them more ammo to attack me with, and it looks like the soldiers down below are advancing up towards the plateau, and ignoring the shiny stuff—so I’ll also end up surrounded pretty fast.

Still, I can’t just leave everything behind… but it’s not like I can——carry… it…

Suddenly remembering that I can carry everything, I descend towards the plateau.

Part 6—Magic Knight

“Half of you gather that side over there. The rest of us will gather the rest.”

My Squad was instructed to gather the mountain of gold and jewels. While I am glad I do not need to face that dragon, it annoys me that I’ve been tasked with such physical labor.

I’m a Knight after all.

Still, dragons have quite the taste in jewels—I can’t even fathom where many of these jewels even come from.

As expected, we were given magic bags, which were enchanted by a special magic that could hold quite a large amount without gaining any weight. There was a limit in size and weight, but any less than that, and the sack would feel as if it weigh no more than as if it were empty.

I was ordered to gather a large pile of jewels to the right side of the cavern.

In a little under 3 minutes, we had managed to obtain all the treasure that could fit inside the sacks. However, there were a number of large statues, gilded ornaments, and decorative equipment that wouldn’t fit in the small opening of our magic bags. What we could carry, we gathered together, and decided to come back for it.

Ever since a minute ago, the commotion of the soldiers outside has picked up, and it looks like many of them were trying to hurry up.

Did something happen?

Soon after, a soldier came rushing into the cavern. He showed obvious signs of anxiety and nervousness—what was going on now?

“The Dragon landed atop of the plateau! He seems to be gathering the eggs with some kind of magic—we think he’ll be heading down here soon too.”

From the side, I hear my squad captain audibly click his tongue, as he drew his sword. “Then we’ll corner him here, and capture the damn beast.”

The cavern should limit his mobility, and eliminate his flight advantage. If we can ambush him, here, capturing him shouldn’t pose a problem—

Or so I thought—

The cave entrance suddenly received a blast—the men outside were likely blown away, and even though most of my squad were already in position, the shock wave from the explosion disoriented me, and likely everyone else inside. My sword drops as I feel the echo of the explosion pass through me—

I open my eyes in time to see one of my squadmates charge the Dragon, only to be blown away by mere wind. He turns to his left where my squad captain lay unconscious, and grabs something—the magic bag—and I see it disappear. He continues towards me, the next closest person.

The monster gazes into my eyes—

Not even a meter away, I can hear its steady breath and low grumble—

It knows we tried to take the treasure—

It’s going to kill us—

As these thoughts pass through my minds…

I don’t even notice as the floor beneath my knees becomes wet.

Author Notes:

Some of you can probably see where this is going. Maybe.

Anyways, I thought it'd be amusing if Jason didn't care so much about fighting with the other dragons, but then was suddenly pushed to act when he saw them taking the hoarded gold and treasure.

As a Dragon, he doesn't have a big sense of possessions, until someone else is trying to take them.

As for the eggs, he's taking those out of spite. He doesn't particularly care for other dragons or anything, but he also feels like foiling everything they tried to do for being annoying.

Anyways, it seems I didn't really make my magic system too clear, and people are building their own misconceptions, so I'll explain it in the story at a later time.
