15: Ominous Spell

“Reward for completing quest: Babies First Step. You now have access to the quest menu, skill menu, item quick select and mini map.” Network says in Ke’an’s head.

Ke’an looks over to System with a concerned look on his face. She can tell something is wrong and she sighs knowing it means she won’t be able to rest like she wanted.

System ticks her tongue in frustration. “What is it?”

“Quest menu.” Ke’an says.

The quest menu opens in Ke’an’s vision.

“You got the quest menu now?” System says with a deep breath.

“Yes.” Ke’an says.

Ke’an reads out the details of the quest to System and she simply shakes her head. Telling Ke’an she won’t be able to help in a fight until she reaches at least level ten. She also tells him that if they don’t complete the quest, demotion from Apprentice Administrator would turn him into a fallen like her, meaning that the world be deleted.

Ke’an paces back and forth for a minute trying to think over his options. “Killing one greater snow wraith would be impossible for a single person! Those things have been known to take out entire teams of monster hunters. No one has even seen one for hundreds of years.”

“Yeah, when I was the Administrator I noticed that they were causing too much havoc so I reduced their numbers.” System leans up against a nearby tree to get as much rest as she could manage. “Honestly I don’t think this is a fair combat test for you especially for only five transcendent experiences, that is highway robbery. I wonder if Network based the combat level off of the fact you killed me.”

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

“So what do we do?” Ke’an asks as he stares at the quest. “My people are not heroes, we are assassins and thieves this is just suicide.”

“Hmm… with your new stats you can probably take them out but we need to see what skills you have.” System says after some contemplation. “Those things are high level creatures.” She smiles as she comes up with a plan. “This could actually be good. You can help me power level!”

“What does that mean?” Ke’an questions.

“As a fallen I will get experience from killing magical creatures. The stronger the creature relative to me the more experience I will get. If we play our cards right I can get enough experience in this one fight to reach level ten. Then I can access my fallen menus and help you out.”

Ke’an furrows his brow in contemplation. “Will you really be any help at level ten? That is five levels lower than I was before I met you. You’ll be as strong as I was… well I know I couldn’t take on a wraith.”

System puffs out her chest and smirks. She would look confident if she wasn’t also panting from exhaustion. “There is a massive difference between us when it comes to combat experience. Don’t forget we aren’t human--transcendent and fallen bodies are stronger than them. If you can get one close to death and let me finish it off it will most likely level me up so I can help out.”

“I hope you are right. Open skill menu.” Ke’an says.

The skill menu is divided into three sections with a single icon inside each section. The first section is labeled ‘Deicide’ and the icon is two hands with fingers interlocking in a triangle. Above the Deicide icon it says “You are the slayer of gods, your will is indomitable in the face of unwinnable odds”. The second section is labeled ‘Regicide’ with the icon of a crown covered in blood. Above this icon it says “Earthen kings fall before the man that refuses to bow to even Gods”. The final section says ‘Genocide’ with the icon of a mass grave. The text over the last icon says “It doesn't matter if one or one thousand, the masses bow or die”. Each of the icons has golden threads that extend outward into many branches and grayed out icons that are impossible to make out. Ke’an looks at each of the available icons so the explanation of each skill will pop up.

----------------------------------------

Skill: Deicide 0.00%

Skill type: Passive

Cooldown: 12 hours

Magic cost: None

Effect: You will never buckle to fear and will think rationally even in the most dire situation. You are immune to mind control, and mind altering magic.

Transcendent effect: Your soul has been strengthened to resist damage from beings of higher transcendence regardless of level.

Skill: Regicide 0.00%

Skill type: Active

Cooldown: 2 minutes

Magic Cost: Minor

Effect: Imbue your next attack or the attack of a selected targeted ally with the 10x kinetic force. If the attack is not physical in nature or the target is a spiritual entity with immunity to kinetic force, energy will be converted into magic disruption damage.

Transcendent effect: Increase magic cost to high to imbue yourself and one targeted ally at the same time or imbue yourself with twice the effect in your next attack.

Skill: Genocide 0.00%

Skill Type: Passive

Cooldown: 12 hours

Magic cost: None

Effect: Enemies have two choices: bow or die. You and your selected allies will have slightly increased physical, magical and spiritual damage when outnumbered.

Transcendent Effect: Every enemy killed will add stacking damage effects to your attacks regardless if outnumbered or not. Genocide will also take effect if a single enemy is over 10 levels higher than you.

As Ke’an sees the names of the spells he understands how to use them as if he already knew what they were and they were already a part of him. His passive spells have to be activated once with the incantation then they will remain on forever without requiring any additional magic. The active skill on the other hand will have to be activated each time for its use. He thought the sensation was weird having new magic swell within him and the knowledge to use it. It wasn’t something that he hadn’t experienced before however. The magic to steal abilities his clan prides itself on feels the same way.

Ke’an says the words of power to activate Deicide. “I am the slayer of Gods.”

“That is an ominous spell.” System responds and sharpens her gaze on him. “You aren’t evil are you. I would hate to have given my power to someone actively trying to kill Gods.”

“I am not evil and I did not make the spell incantation.” Ke’an says in his defence. “You know that.”

“I feel like that is what an evil person would say.” System responds with a smirk.

Ke’an pushes the conversation along and System explains that because the menu was just unlocked the only skills that appeared on the list right now are the ones he gained from his class. She also tells him that as he uses magic that is not on the list it will be consolidated into one of the three sections and slightly altered by his class. She is the most excited about his Genocide and Regicide skills since they will immediately give him more damage in the upcoming fight.

Ke’an also looks at his mini map which is a small map that appears in the corner of his vision. The map can be zoomed in to just a few meters an and out one mile. He appears on the map as an arrow which points whichever way he is looking. System appears as a green dot with her name above her. His quest objective appears as a yellow arrow at the corner of the map pointing him in the direction of the village even though it is not in range.

Now that he has the mini map he feels confident they can find the town. He remembers that he passed a town he didn’t have time to visit on his way up the mountain. Now that he thought about it he believes it is in the direction the map is pointing. Now that he has to fight some of the deadliest monsters in the region he feels stupid for having used one of his Administrator Authority powers already. If things get bad he wants to have a back up plan that could potentially turn the tide.

“We are going now.” Ke’an says.

“Alright I am ready.” The tired girl responds with a reluctant stretch. “I will try to keep up.”

“I have a solution to that.” Ke’an says with a waggle of his eyebrows.
