Chapter 10: Basil's Lament

Chapter 10: Basil's Lament

"So a fan! Tell Mr. Wayne, which of my classic roles was your favorite? Sherlock Holmes perhaps? Or was it one of the many horror films, like Frankenstein's monster or Clayface?" Basil looked around the room at the many posters.

Wayne genuinely smiled and nodded, "Sherlock Holmes, and Robin Hood for sure. Even to this day, I am fascinated by the world's greatest detective and the selfless hero who sacrifices his wealth for the good of the people."

"Noblesse oblige!" Basil Karlo said dramatically, "It is said that such an act has gone out of style and led our Gotham City to turn from one of the most beautiful cities in the world into the garbage dump it is today."

Wayne nodded and said, "Well, thanks to your old movies there are some of us who still remember, sir. Just this week I have started a project to revive Gotham's glory. I want a Gotham that outshines the Metropolis across the bay from us."

"Good! Good!" Basil looked genuinely happy to hear that. He turned toward Katherine and said, "Mr. Wayne, have you met my granddaughter Katherine? She's about your age, I believe." He said softly, "And very much single."

"Papa!" Katherine blushed and hid her face in her hands.

Wayne smiled and said, "Yes, sir, she's a very beautiful woman. Speaking of Clayface, what do you think of the remake of 'The Man of Clay' that's being filmed at the studio right now?"

Basil's face twisted into one of rage and stood up abruptly, "It's an abomination! That hack, Snyder Bixby in the role I turned into one synonymous with the name Basil Karlo! I shall not 'buy that for a dollar!' nor shall I accept anyone other than the great Carol Forman as the iconic Helen!"

"Carol was so beautiful back then, ah... How many planes flew over the English channel with her picture on the nose." Basil started dancing around the room in a waltz, "I once asked Carol to be my wife, you know. She turned me down, it turned out she had a thing for an officer in the army." He looked disappointed and then looked over at Katherine, "I was drinking in a bar to wash away my lament when I met your grandmother, Katherine. Ah, such a beauty she was... Not an actress, but a simple waitress."

Basil sat back down in his easy chair, "Mr. Wayne, you should have some say in the matter, why are you allowing this travesty to continue!"

"The actress who passed away during the filming was a person of importance to me, Mr. Karlo," Wayne said, looking at the pair of Grandfather and Granddaughter in front of him.

Katherine had a very guilty face, while Basil arched an eyebrow. Basil turned and looked at Katherine. "I'm so sorry for your loss, Mr. Wayne." Katherine said softly, "I'm sorry for saying those things earlier, obviously, I had no idea."

Basil looked back at Wayne and cleared his throat, "Yes, yes, that Julie Madison was a lovely girl, I'm sure she would have done a wonderful Helen, don't mind my attitude earlier, I am an old man well past his day. I can only live my best life through these memories and trinkets of the past."

Basil looked at a poster of Sherlock Holmes and then looked at Wayne and said, "You are on the case then? You thought to look into the motives of my granddaughter and I because your friend had ties to my granddaughter and you had heard that I was against the filming?"

Wayne nodded and then stood up from the chair, "Tell me, Basil, Katherine, did you kill Julie?"

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

Basil also stood up and pointed at the door, "I think you should leave now, Mr. Wayne. The Karlo residence doesn't welcome your accusations."

Katherine walked over to Wayne and put a gentle hand on his arm and led him out of the parlor. "My grandpa hasn't left the house for many years, Mr. Wayne. He has agoraphobia since his memory has started to fail. I didn't like Julie, there is no secret about that. That's why the tabloids like to write things saying I called her a name or I am against her having this part or that. Shamefully I let you hear something I shouldn't have said in polite company about her, but I am no murderer Mr. Wayne. The day she was murdered I was on set at the Soap Opera. We work a ten-hour day. We film one episode and rehearse for a second."

They walked out to where the pair of motorcycles were parked and Katherine looked sadly at Wayne, "I hope that you find out who murdered her, Mr. Wayne."

Wayne nodded and said, "I will, I'm sorry for upsetting your Grandfather. It was lovely meeting you both. I really am a fan of your Grandfather's work, if it's any consolation." He smiled at her before starting his bike and racing down the long driveway and out to the main street.

As Wayne zipped through traffic he thought about the handshake. Was that a man capable of superhuman strength? He wasn't sure. He hadn't noticed any security cameras on the street. Basil could have easily left the mansion undetected while Katherine was at work. As Wayne pulled up to a light he heard over the police scanner that there was a burglary in progress at a jewelry store coming up in a few blocks. So he goosed the bike and sped to a nearby alley and slipped into his bat suit.

As Wayne climbed up a fire escape to get to the roof he saw someone coming out through a skylight dressed in a sexy kitty Halloween costume. He followed her as she jumped from rooftop to rooftop and then finally stopped at an unsavory hotel building. He stayed in the shadows as she pulled out a bag of clothes. She looked around and then started taking her costume off. She had stripped down to her underwear still wearing the mask when Wayne finally walked out of the shadows and spoke, "Well well well, if it isn't my old enemy Catwoman."

Her eyes were as big as saucers as she screamed and got into a martial arts stance. Wayne quickly advanced throwing out a punch which she caught and then pulled his arm sending a fierce kick in between his legs. The Batsuit was heavily armored so all Wayne had to do was shift slightly to foul the attack. He transferred his weight as she tried to throw him over her shoulder and pulled her into a bear hug that caused the both of them to fall onto the ground with Catwoman on top of Wayne in a very indecent position.

Wayne could smell the scent of Madison's perfume on the woman. Being this close to her with her in this state of undress certain urges were going through his mind and body. She said softly into his ear, "Are we fighting or fucking."

Wayne was already nearly kissing her in the position of the fall so he did so, and she responded. The fight quickly changed into an intense makeout session. At some point, he tore her underwear off and his Batsuit was shrugged partially off. Wayne wasn't sure how long they went at it, but eventually, she stood up and put the sexy kitty costume back on and walked to the door on the roof, and said, "You owe me a new set of underwear. That was Wayne's of Hollywood you know."

He laughed and then lay there on the roof all tension and grief from Julie's death gone for the moment as he stared into the stars completely satisfied. His back was severely scratched from her animalistic lovemaking but he didn't care. He also didn't manage to take back the stolen jewels. It didn't matter since he knew exactly where to go to get them back. He smiled and then managed to restore his dignity by zipping his Batsuit back up and then heading back to where he parked his motorcycle.

When Wayne finally returned to the Batcave Alfred gave him an incredulous look, "Master Bruce... You... Did you visit a house of ill repute this evening?"

Wayne then looked into one of the mirrors on the bike and laughed loudly. He had several lipstick marks on his face and hickeys on his neck. "Would you believe I tried to stop a jewelry store robbery?"

Alfred raised an eyebrow and then asked, "I see Master Bruce, shall I prepare the penicillin then?"

Wayne laughed hard once more and then asked, "Alfred, how do I buy lingerie without knowing a woman's size?"

Alfred did a facepalm and then asked, "Perhaps asking a woman. The woman in question might be the better idea?"

Wayne shook his head, "No, I want to bring it as a surprise gift."

Alfred rolled his eyes, "I suggest asking one of the employees at the store, then."
