Chapter 6: Mana

Chapter 6: Mana

Five months have passed since then, which makes me one year old. My mother is finally done teaching me all the words in the dictionary, or rather, this world version of the dictionary. It’s the same as in my previous world.

It wasn’t that bad of an experience, for she sometimes uses storybooks as teaching material; these storybooks are filled with the adventures of heroes… Am I turning into one of those overly obsessive “fangirls”? ... It's fine if I say no homo probably.

----------------------------------------------

I wake up in the middle of the night with my stomach rumbling. Why, of all times, do I have to get hungry?

Well, I do remember that my mother has a bowl of fruits on the counter in the kitchen; she says that she is letting them fully ripen. She probably won’t get mad at me if I take one.

I get out of bed and walk towards the kitchen. Then I hear some voices as I am on my way to the kitchen. It sounded so wrong; what do I mean by that? It’s moaning—the lewd kind. It was coming from the room where I see them always go out soaking wet.

My curiosity will kill me one day, for sure, because instead of just leaving it alone, I went closer to that room.

“Ah, yes, do it faster! ”

That was my father's voice, and then I heard my mother giggle. I also hear a sound similar to what you would call fapping or something. Yup, they are most likely doing it.

The door of the room is slightly open, so I take a peek inside.

I see my mother kneeling in front of my father, who is standing in front of her and facing her.

Is she giving him a job of the hand, if you know what I mean?

Then my father notices me as our eyes meet.

“Ah, Gabriel, come over here.”

Eh? Is this family so open that he wants to show me them doing lewd things? I reluctantly come closer to them.

As I go to their side, I cover my eyes, as I don’t want to see his shlong.

“Almost there, honey! ”

My father said it in a gleeful manner.

“What’s wrong, Gabriel? Why are you covering your eyes? ”

My mother said it with such an innocent-sounding voice.

I slowly remove my hands that are covering my eyes.

Oh…. They weren’t doing it. Is that a butter churner?

"Cool, isn’t it? This is where we get those tasty butters! ”

My father said it in a boastful manner.

“Uh, yes.”

I said it with a somewhat monotone voice.

“Did my little Gabriel have a nightmare? ”

My mother said it with a worried tone.

“Uh no, it’s just-“

The rumbling of my stomach stops me from talking.

"Oh, you’re hungry? Well, good timing. I just finished churning butter.”

I nodded to her.

We enjoyed a nice midnight snack.

----------------------------------------------

Now that I think about it, I have no knowledge of magic. I better ask my mother for that. After all, she uses magic frequently. She usually visits me to check on me; perhaps I can ask her at one of those times, and right on cue. I think she’s coming; I can hear footsteps nearby.

I just need to say I want to learn magic. I better make a face that is irresistible for her to reject my request.

I can hear the doorknob moving and then the creak of the door opening.

I need to smile as hard as I can, close my eyes, tilt my head a little for extra cuteness, and say it.

“I want to learn magic, mam- “

“YOU DO?! ”

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

A manly voice stops me before I can finish my sentence.

Eh? Wait, that isn't my mother’s voice. I open my eyes to see the big, bulky figure of my father.

This father of mine doesn’t look like he uses magic, but rather his pure, raw strength. Is the one who came to visit me. And also the one I accidentally asked instead of my mother.

“I am so happy that little Gabriel wants me to teach him about magic! ”

What is he going to teach me, muscle magic?! I have to reject him. I just need to look him in the eyes and say no.

As our eyes meet, I can see such joy that if I reject him, he will succumb to crippling depression. He would jump on a wheelchair to say he has crippling depression. Wait, does a wheelchair even exist in this world? No idea.

"Yes, please, father,” I mutter while trying my best to hide the utter disappointment in my voice.

"Well, that’s great, for I, the captain of the magic swordsman division, shall teach you all I know about magic.”

My eyes widened after hearing him say that. I was filled with joy, but I needed to confirm if I hadn’t misheard him, so I asked him.

“Wait, are you really the captain of the magic swordman division?! ”

"Well, yes, I am.”

My eyes sparkled with excitement as he said that.

My father looked at me and smiled, seeing my state.

"Alright, first we need to learn about mana.”

“Mana is everywhere; there is mana over there.”

He pointed somewhere in the room.

“Mana is over there.”

He pointed to another part of the room.

“Mana is also there.”

Pointing to another part of the room

“There’s also mana right there.”

Pointing at the ceiling of the room

“Alright, I get it; mana is everywhere,” I said to him with a somewhat annoyed tone.

“Good, mana is also inside every living creature. Now you may ask what exactly mana is.”

I repeatedly nodded.

"Well, I don’t know, Tee Hee,” my father said, and hits his head softly with his tongue out with one eye close.

I don’t know if I am disappointed in him not knowing what mana is or in him doing the silly me gesture that will probably give me nightmares tonight.

"Hey, don’t look at me that disappointed; I can still somewhat explain what it does.”

“Oh ho, I am listening," I said with such a manly tone.

My father was bewildered by that voice.

“I meant, yes, papa, please tell me,” I said as cutely as I could.

“Ah yes, it is said that mana can attract the elemental spirits that roam around the world; these elemental spirits are water, fire, earth, light, and abyss; they are the ones that compose the world; it is said that the more mana you have, the more elemental spirits you can call upon, and the less mana you have, the less you can call; after the spirits get attracted by the mana on your body, they will grant the power of the element you ask to use. There are tiers of elemental spirits that roam the world, from lesser elemental spirits to greater elemental spirits. The lesser elemental spirit can provide little magic power, while the greater elemental spirit will grant you tremendous magic power. Spirits can take any form, but only those who are classified as greater spirits are the only ones who can change their physical form at will; a lesser spirit cannot be seen, but the higher tier it has, the better form it can take, like the greater spirit. It is said that they can use humanoid forms.”

"Hmm, I see, so spirits are the ones who can let us use magic.”

"Well, there are times that we only need mana to use something akin to magic, like body reinforcement, which makes the body twice as strong as before. There is also magic that can be used to detect something nearby. I believe they are called skills, but skills are not that common, so there is no study that goes deeper into them. Which is also why skills are harder to comprehend. Unlike the magic that spirits provide, which is easier to understand and much more powerful than this mysterious ability called skills,”

I tilted my head. “Papa, are you saying that it’s better to just use magic that is provided by the elemental spirits? ”

“Yes, that is correct and also if you use too much magic it will lessen the mana your body has; making the elemental spirits that were once attracted with your mana roam around the world once more, and if you ever want to call upon them you have to wait till your body has replenished its mana, but there is a way to permanently let the elemental spirit stay with you and that is by making a contract with it, by doing so the elemental spirit will stay with you even if you have diminished all of your mana, but not many can do so only those who have tremendous mana can do it; it is said that if you make a contract with one of the elemental spirits the full capacity of mana in your body will be reduced permanently the higher tier of the elemental spirit has the bigger the amount of mana will be reduced from your body. There are also other ways of forming a contract with an elemental spirit without losing mana permanently, but you have to sacrifice something, either with your physical body or your life essence. Just like I said, the contracted elemental spirits stay with you even if you don’t have any mana left, but because you have no more mana, the elemental spirits can only lend a limited amount of power to their contractor. I don’t know if this is correct, but I also once heard that greater elemental spirits can lend their power without anything in exchange for those they like or something like that. They also said that the greater elemental spirit doesn’t even need mana from their contractor, but there were no records of that happening ever.”

“Oh, wow! ”I said

Shit, I can feel my eyelids getting heavier with each second pass, but I need to keep listening so I can understand the fundamentals of this world magic.

“Now let me explain how the elemental spirits can lend you their powers. Now that the elemental spirits are attracted to your mana, they will lend their powers to you if you tell them to do so. That’s where chants will come to use. With the use of chants, the elemental spirits will do what you want. Some say chants are a way to communicate with elemental spirits. By using chants, you and the elemental spirit can cooperate to do magic. Whenever you successfully manage to use magic, the amount of mana you have decreases. Like I previously said, the more powerful the magic, the more mana will decrease in your body. Now that I think of it, the magic that came out of your body is like mana coming out. That’s probably it. Anyway, now that we're talking about this, let me teach you a simple chant. It’s a chant to call upon a certain elemental spirit you want. The chant goes like this-“

As Riel looks towards Gabriel to teach him how to do the chant, he just notices that Gabriel is already fast asleep.

“Guess he can’t take in all that information,” he mumbles.

Riel carried Gabriel back to his room and put him to bed.

Cock-A-Doodle-Doo

Hmm…. I fucking slept again!!!
