Chapter 5

Ragen saw a big bald head who threatened a little boy in the corner of the street with a big knife and a smaller figure who didn’t look like a thug. The smaller one spoke to the boy about some debts. Both of them didn’t notice the entering of Ragen. He just thought for a moment before he jumped in the air and stabbed the big thug from behind in the neck. It was a good hit, but it wasn’t enough. The big thug started to scream in pain and turned around to hit Ragen. If Ragen wasn’t a small young boy then he wouldn’t be able to dodge the attack from the big thug. But with his small stature he was barely able to dodge the ponderous figure. He landed another hit with his little knife at the legs of his opponent. Suddenly he heard a ding!

He was stunned for a moment and that was a fatal error. The other one who hadn’t acted yet did also take out a knife and rammed it into Ragen. He felt intense pain and collapsed. He thought: ‘Noo, I was hit. I can’t die here.’ One of the thugs said: “Shit, I think he is dying. Everyone heard your scream, Idiot. Now we have to escape before the guards find us.” Both got up and escaped, but before the big thug disappeared, he looked back at Ragen and inside his eyes was a murderous shine then he turned around and ran away.

He saw the little boy approaching him. Ragen told him: “Please take me to a healer. Please help me.” The boy hesitated and then nodded. He slowly lifted him up and then carried him away. At this time Ragen had already fainted.

He had a dream where he saw his family. They were playing soccer together. His two sons Liam and Robert were the outfield players while his daughter was the goalkeeper. He was the referee. It was a funny game. The dream ended, and he stood alone on the field. His two sons and his daughter had disappeared. He missed them very much. Right then he heard a voice. “If that is not Ragen. Long time no see. You must have avoided death by just an inch to meet me. You know I can’t stand to watch you any longer. We have a deal and it’s time that you start to wander on my path. So, I will give you a task. Before the year ends you must go deep into the forest and kill Hobgoblin who governs over the Green Fist Tribe. If you fail to accomplish this task, I will punish you and everyone you love.” Ragen who had stopped crying starred at the sky where the voice did come from. It was Lazarus who had spoken to him. He knew he couldn’t do anything against Lazarus, so he just nodded. The voice said: “Good, if you are able to successfully eliminate the hobgoblin I will give you a reward. Now it’s time to wake up for you” With that sentence the voice disappeared. Everything became black again and he heard a ding sound.

Player got a new quest: Kill the hobgoblin in the forest until the time is over. Remaining time 7 months 2 days and 8 hours.

This is a special quest. For this quest the player gets the double amount of EXP.

Then he woke up. The first thing he saw was a yellow ceiling, then a face entered his vision. It was an old granny with a serious expression. She asked: “How many fingers do you see?” He replied: “Three if I am not mistaken” She grinned and proclaimed: “He is well and can argue with this old lady.” Right after she proclaimed that he heard a crying voice. “My little one. Mommy is coming.” Somewhere in the room he heard a satisfied grunt, then his vision was blocked by the huge chest from his mother who hugged him tightly. He tried to breathe but it was futile. Before he fainted, the old granny told his mother to stop strangling him with her chest. Then his father came into his vision and firstly looked at him seriously, as if he wanted to confirm something and then he was hugged tightly by his father. “Son you have done something stupid, please don’t do that again.” He just nodded, then he started to cry and was happy to be alive with his family. After a while he heard how somebody cleared his throat and came to his bed.

The person was armed and armoured. “Hello Ragen, I am captain of the guards. My name is Ian. Would it be alright for you to answer some questions from my side?” Ragen replied: “I can answer them, but I would prefer it if my parents could wait outside until we are finished.” His mother tried to protest but his father took her outside with him.

The guard captain asked him some questions about the appearance of those guys and what they did to him. After the questions were answered, Ragen asked the captain what happened to the boy who was with him. The captain told him, that his men found them in the street, they brought him to the old Janet who was a healer. There he was unconscious for the last two days. In these two days the boy disappeared and was not seen again. Ragen was a bit disappointed to find out that the boy left him, but he thought that the boy must have had his reasons for that.

Right when the guard captain left the room his parents and the old Janet came back in. They talked for a bit longer with him and he heard that they saw him when the guards carried him wounded to the healer and how worried they were. He smiled to assure them that he was well. After a while the old Janet interrupted his parents and asked them to leave their son to her. He had to rest.

The days went by for Ragen as he slowly recovered. But there was a problem and that was the payment for his treatment. His parents weren’t poor, but they weren’t able to afford the price for his healing. The old Janet had to use some quite expensive herbs and a lot of magic to save him. He saw the solution and asked Janet if he could work off his debts. She wasn’t against it but reminded him that it was a hard work which required the mind and the body. As he was recovered, he started to help the old lady. She often nagged about his work, but he put a lot of effort into every task she gave him. At first the tasks were quite boring, and he had to concentrate. For example, he had to wash the glass cylinder and the floors of the building. Then he had to clean the house and sort the medicines. That became his daily routine. As more time passed Janet became quite pleased with his work and gave him some free time between his work. In this leisure time he went back to the library where a mad Victor lectured him for missing his lessons. He had to apologise to victor and he explained his situation. Even tough Victor was quite mad at the beginning the lessons continued, beside the work at Janet’s place. Soon Ragen would be able to read 90 percent of the books he found. Victor was quite pleased to see his self-proclaimed student making such progress. Ragen often read the books now just for himself. He stayed for hours in the library when one day something happened. He heard a ding sound.

He was surprised and pleased at the same time. He immediately tried the skill out. He opened a new book which he just found. It was called ‘The basic knowledge about magic’. He activated his skill and was shocked. All the facts, details and phrases flooded his mind. He instantly knew that there were 6 types of magic. 2 non-elemental magic, called the dark and light magic. The other four are the elemental magic. There was fire, water, wind and earth. There existed another magic, but it's not clearly explained and it can't be used. It's the legendary chaos magic. It's neither a element or a light or dark thing. All that the book knew, was that it existed.

He didn’t even need to read the books anymore, he just needed to take them into his hand and appraise them. He continued like this and started to appraise every book he found in the library until the night came and he had to head back home. At home his parents told him that the old Janet visited them and asked for him. She had a mission for him. He was surprised that Janet visited his home, that was the first time that something like this happened. Janet was most of the time busy and wouldn’t visit someone just for an ordinary mission. It had to be something very important. They told him, he should come tomorrow quite early to her. Something had happened, and she needed him quite urgently.

He meditated and trained with his bow before he went to bed. Before he started to sleep he looked one last time at his status screen.
