Chapter 4.1 - Acts of Necessity

Chapter 4.1 - Acts of Necessity

Belv had yet to snap out of her stupor so Anya went to work on the stasis chamber. First the roots separated themselves from the blue crystal. They seemed almost reluctant at first but gradually settled themselves throughout the cave. Anya focused her attention on the crystal and placed both of her hands on it causing it to begin to melt.

Belv who, with much difficulty, had managed to come back to her senses joined Anya next to the puddle of what used to be the crystal. As she aprroached the puddle Belv saw an unconsious man laying on his side with splotches of black covering almost all of his body. Belv jumped back in horror as she realized who the man was and, more importantly, what those dark splotches were.

"OH FUCK!!"

"Yeah. I thought you might say that."

"HOW AND WHY IS HE STILL ALIVE!? DON'T YOU REMEMBER WHAT HE DID?? HE SHOULD BE DEAD!"

"Calm down so I can explain. Can you do that?"

"But he-"

"Can you do that?"

"Hmph.....It had better be a damn good explanation."

In order to keep with her schedule, Anya split herself into two. One Anya would explain while the other would work on the unconcious man. Belv did her best to ignore the additional Anya in the room and focus on her conversation.

"I brought you here to tell you everything. Or rather, to remind you of some and then tell you the rest."

"....What do you mean by 'remind me of some'?

"Here. Let me just show you."

"What the he-! AAAAHHHHHH!!!!"

Belv screamed out in pain as Anya forced her way inside of her mind. This method of memory restoration was as effective as it was excruciatingly painful. Just as Belv thought she was going to pass out from the unbearable pain, something broke and the once lost memories poured relentlessly into her mind.

Panet Homeward. Nearly three million years prior.

Four young deities find themselves in the midst of a great civil war. A war so brutal and on such a global scale that less than a hundred Gods and Goddesses would survive its path of death and destruction. As the years trickled by these four go on to become a force to be reckoned with. They were known to abhor violence and the madness it spread. Thus they acted as peacekeepers who mediated the seemingly endless feuds between either sides and in doing so saved countless lives both mortal and not.

But nothing lasts forever. Even with the efforts of these peacekeepers, the war only got worse. In the end they were truly only delaying the inevitable.

The war had gone on for so long that most forgot what they were fighting for, only knowing that they couldn't let the enemy win. And because of such conviction, a new weapon was made. The purpose of such a weapon was to end the war in one fell swoop. And it did just that, only it worked too well. This weapon was designed with an unexpected flaw. As effective as it was, it simply did not have the intelligence to differentiate friend from foe.

Although mortals did not suffer from the weapon, the heavoc it spread amongst the Gods and Goddesses caused global mayhem nearly causing several species of intelligence to become extinct. The 'parasite', as they named it, would have wiped out nearly every last deity had it not been for the efforts of the peacekeepers.

Being forced to slay their brothers and sisters had nearly driven them mad. One after another, they had begged and pleaded with them not to, but they couldn't show mercy and they couldn't allow this sickness spread any further.

Their acts of containment had earned them the contempt of others. But it was the only way to stop the parasite from spreading. What other choice did they have? No matter what happened, as long as the four of them were alive they wouldn't rest until the parasite was stopped utterly and completely.

But as we all know, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
