While bullets were flying her way Lane didn't seem to care. With my enhanced vision I could make out, that most of our attack vaporized into thin air half a meter away from her. Her expression turned hard as she looked at Rose and me.
"I'm in a really bad mood right now, you're right on time."
Spitting out she threw multiple balls at the one nearest. It might not have been easy for me to avoid but Rose was on a whole other level and propelled herself through the glowing blue suns landing in front of our target ready to blast her away. Lane did not even seem fazed and simply looked down at her with a smirk. Orbs formed all around her, hundreds of them all giving off her signature blue light.
It didn't matter, Lane was already in Rose's reach. Her fist shot forward... and evaporated. Over the com I could hear my comrade shout in surprise as she pulled back jumping through four or Lane's orbs though the following explosion did not seem to damage her a lot.
After getting knocked around a few meters she got up again, her entire left hand had disappeared and it looked like someone had cut it off with some kind of sword.
"She's put up some kind of energy shield. I've never seen something that could destroy out equipment so cleanly, be careful."
I nodded since I too was quite nervous to see something as powerful as that. Lane on the other hand just laughed arrogantly.
"How do you like it all so powerful mechanized squadron? I'm surrounded by high energy particles cutting through anything that comes close. I will enjoy crushing you!"
Che!
We had fucked up.
Dozens of orbs came at us from different directions though the speed was slower than before so we simply dodged them by jumping around. Though it got repeatedly harder since the consecutive ones flew at higher speeds and weirder angels. Over the com the one handed Rose shouted at me.
"Alex, I have a plan. I doubt she can keep that shield up for forever. We have to throw as much at it as we can. It's the only thing I can come up with right now."
"Let's try it, better than nothing."
With a shout Rose dodged another projectile and hid behind one of the cars on the street. Then without hesitation she kicked it towards Lane though it didn't do much but explode in a big fireball revealing the unhurt Lane inside.
"You think that'll help yo-"
She get's interrupted as I launch multiple vehicles and rubble towards her using a spot under her as hot spot for my dark matter. Explosions turn the street in front of us into a fiery hell...
But the orbs do not stop following us and sped up even more as a furious Lane appeared through the smoke.
"How about you let people finish their senten-"
She doesn't get to finish whatever she wanted to say as a big part of a building fell down from one of the skyscrapers seemingly crushing her. Over the com I heard Rose laughing during the dodging of the orbs.
"I won't let her finish her sentence ONCE but I think it's only going to buy us time, we need a plan B."
The stone split apart sending a shower of shards at me and Rose, though they bounced of harmlessly barely leaving a scratch on our armor. Lane seemed even madder than before, her hair seemingly floating in the air while she took multiple steps towards us.
"You are so dead."
The number of orbs increased once more and we barely had any time to react to them. Then I thought of something to at least stall out a bit. Shouting over the chaos I reached her ears.
"Hey,
All orbs stopped momentarily mid air. Before her defiant voice answered me.
"You're lying they should be more than enough to handle
This time it was me who laughed, so she had already prepared for one of them to run amok. But it hadn't been him anyways.
"It wasn't that boy, it was
While distracted I saw Rose pick up a sharp piece of rubble hiding it behind her back. Lane mustered me and I could see that she believed me in her eyes, she probably hadn't gotten into contact with the second team.
"So what. You will die, nothing will change this fact, noth-"
Then Rose reacted throwing the stone she had hid at Lane with all the power she had. The speed surpassed anything I could have accomplished and I could even hear the sound barrier break as it reached sonic speeds.
It did not matter. Inches in front of her face it evaporated once more and made Lane take a step back in surprise. Using her astonishment I created a field around me with a radius of multiple meters encompassing Lane as well. The moment her orbs started moving again I raised the gravitational pull as much as I could. Explosions hit my body as the orbs start aiming towards me. Due to my own weight I did not move at all but when I looked down at my side I noticed that my entire right arm had been blown off together with my rifle. A sharp pain tore through my body but I ignored it. Rose had endured it as well. In front of me I could see Lane struggling under the pressure as well, though her orbs still kept rotating. Then suddenly all started aiming towards me since I had been discovered as the one exerting the pressure. Out of clenched teeth Lane started talking again.
"I knew someone that used a similar power once, it is crude but can be counteracted, don't think you're so mighty because of simple pressure, you'll die before me."
She gathered energy in her trembling hands aiming them towards me.
"I have something special for you. No amount of armor can save you from this. So what will you do? Stop the pressure and save yourself or keep the pressure up with the CHANCE of taking me out?"
My answer was already clearly written on my face by my determination.
"Come Lane, let us finish this." was my only response.
Her expression distorted showing disgust. Her hands trembled even worse as they started lighting up in her signature blue. All while I increased the pressure even more and my mechanical legs stumbled under me making me kneel. Sweat appeared on Lanes forehead as she too was forced down, though she still was readying her attack.
"Die military scum!"
Screaming she unleashed the stored energy and I saw it shoot forward. Almost two meters in diameter.
No chance do dodge.
I laughed and increased even further. All cars around us where flattened and the buildings started to be crushed as well. One of us was going down either way or the other. Time seemed to slow down as I watched the stream of energy head towards me. Then a voice interrupted my thoughts.
This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.
"You're a good girl Alex, but don't get overcome by rage, revenge won't help in the end."
The something hit my side. Hard. It felt like I had been run over by a train and even though the force was incredible I barely moved out of the radius of the attack. Keeping up the pressure I look to the side astonished. Only to find Rose lying where I had been, unable to move due to my gravitation. She had jumped into me to shove me out.
"NO!"
Shouting as loud as I can her body gets enveloped in the blue light. It only took a second and the beam had vanished. In its stead there was only a molten piece of grey black metal roughly the size of a human torso. Instantly I stop utilizing my power and rush towards Rose's remains.
Nonononononononoon.
I could not check her pulse and all I felt was hot metal quickly loosing in temperature.
"So your partner died first, the order doesn't matter anyways. Do you dare try again?"
My mind went blank as I felt Lane step behind me undoubtedly with multiple orbs ready to launch. With Liams power I could clearly feel her. A aura filled with arrogance and power to back it up.
I didn't care.
A mentality that would have scared mental doctors to death.
I didn't care.
I do not turn around as tears form in the corner of my eyes. Then I focus on her aura and felt everything. Then I gave it a mental push, something I had never thought would be possible.
"ARRGH!"
With a scream Lane stumbles away from me. Turning around I see her grabbing her head tearing out some strands of her long hair.
"What'd you do bitch!"
Shouting won't help. Again I took hold of the aura I felt and this time I punched it with even more force. With agony in her expression Lane falls on the ground panting. With slow movements I walk toward the spot I had left my rifle at. Picking it up I felt Lane recovering behind me getting ready to attack.
I didn't care.
Dodging the projectile she threw at me I punched her again mentally and saw blood shooting out of her nose before collapsing again. Then I head back towards her while she sets herself in a kneeling position looking right at me with hate.
"You're scum. We are the only ones that can save the world. My plans are perfect."
I shook my head.
"You're wrong Lane. You caused this mess and no one will remember you as a hero. But as a broken human who caused a disaster."
She still answers me wiping the blood away from her nose.
"We are in the right, in the end you will see what you'll be able to do withou-"
BANG!
I had enough of her, my mental attacks had disabled her shield. Lowering the smoking muzzle of my rifle I kick her body away from me. But she wasn't dead, as if I'd ever let her go out easily like this. Throwing away my weapon I get on my knees. She would pay for ki-
It burns.
What?!
I snap around mustering my surrounding. I had heard a voice, a female voice.
IT BURNS!!!!
The scream resounded throughout my brain shaking my vision momentarily. Then I finally noticed it. A small light, barely visible inside my mind. An aura dimly calling for help.
"ROSE!?!!"
Shouting her name I rush towards her remains, clearly feeling her inside the molten armor. Almost crying again I scream towards her while picking her body up in a piggy bag fashion.
"I'll get you help Rose, don't worry. Everything will be fine."
I start jogging forward and stop next to the slowly moving body of Lane on the ground. I hesitate once but remember what Rose had said me. Revenge won't help in the end.
Then I laugh once.
"I am so stupid."
Ignoring my sworn enemy I rush away into a direction I knew the headquarters and more importantly help would be. Shortly before I pass into a side street a female voice calls out for me from behind.
"You're not going to finish her?"
Turning around I notice
"I've had enough. My comrades will always come first. She will die anyways regardless if I finish her or not."
"I understand. But even so, I cannot forgive her for the past. Save your friends soldier. I am sure we will meet again at some point in the future."
I smiled under my helmet.
"I am sure we will
And with that it was over. I did not ask what had happened to
The last thing I can make out from behind me was the start of a conversation between
"Why? Why did you do it?"
Barely audible Lane had realized who she was facing.
"I thought we were friends. We trusted you."
Only
Do not let Rose die.
Revenge will make you feel good for fifteen minutes, friendship lasts your entire life long. I had decided to put comrades and friendship over everything else.
I would not regret it.
In the distance the dust started to settle and reveal a destroyed New York City. The fighting had slowed down and only the sporadic sound of gunfire could be heard as the military hunted down the different organizations.
It was finally over.
