CHAPTER 340
After a moment of hesitation, Johannes answered, "Apparently, Miss Ava confessed her love to Mr. Dixon, but he turned her down…"
Dixon Sutherland was the next in line to the patriarchy of his family and the CEO of Sutherland Corporation. He was a handsome, talented young man.
The Penhams and Sutherlands were neighbors, and Dixon and Austin were buddies who grew up together.
Austin knew well that his sister had had feelings for Dixon since she was a kid. However, why would she need to strangle their cousin's cat just because Dixon didn't reciprocate her feelings?
He asked Johannes so, and the latter hesitated again before answering, "It's said that Mr. Dixon likes Miss Luna…" Belongs to © n0velDrama.Org.
Austin understood it now, and because of that, he was even more livid. "It's not Luna's fault that Dixon likes her! Why would Ava befall misery on Luna?! How can she be so ruthless as to kill Snowball?! No wonder Luna wanted to mangle her—I would if I were her!"
Oh, how he hated himself for being so blind then. If he realized the person sitting on Ava and beating her up was their cousin, he wouldn't have belabored her and f*cked up so badly!
However, it was all too late now. All he could do right then was to hope that Luna would be out of danger soon, or his death was probably the only way to atone for his wrongdoings.
The surgery lasted for a long time, and three hours had passed amidst his anxious waiting, yet it still
wasn't done.
To make things worse, Jennifer's call came before there were any signs of Luna coming out of the operating theater.
Austin's palms sweated, and his scalp tingled when he saw the words 'Aunt Jennifer' on his phone screen.
He didn't dare tell anyone about Luna's injury.
Jennifer wasn't in her best shape. With Luna's fate still unknown, he was worried that his aunt's condition would turn for the worst if she found out about it.
Thus, he had wanted to wait until Luna was out of danger before he informed the family.
By then, it'd be easier for them to accept as well.
But now, Jennifer was calling him; no doubt she had learned of something.
He simply let the ringtone go on, for he dared not face his aunt.
It stopped moments later, but very quickly, Johannes' phone rang.
He lowered his head to take a gander at it before looking over at Austin. "Sir, it's Madam Jennifer…"
At that, Austin closed his eyes and said through gnashed teeth, "Answer it…"
Apprehensive, Johannes asked, "Mr. Austin… Should I tell the truth or…"
"Tell her the truth…" said Austin with clenched fists after a moment's hesitation.
It was one thing for him to keep it from his uncle and aunt, but another for him to lie when his aunt was asking about it.
If he chose to lie, his sin would only aggravate when Luna didn't manage to make it in the end.
"Should I honestly tell Madam Jennifer whatever she asks?" Never had Johannes once thought answering a call could feel so horrifying.
He was worried he'd cause Austin trouble if he said the wrong thing.
Upon seeing Austin nodding with a clenched jaw, Johannes put the phone by his ear apprehensively. "Madam Jennifer?"
"Johannes, have you seen Luna?" Jennifer sounded anxious. "The butler said that Ava strangled Snowball, and Luna ran out crying. He's really worried about her, but he can't find her at all. Have you seen her?"
"I…" Johannes glanced at Austin in response and mumbled fearfully, "Miss Luna is in the hospital…"
"The hospital?!" Jennifer shrieked. "Why would she be in the hospital? What happened to her?"
Johannes mumbled for quite a while, but he just couldn't bring himself to tell her the truth. In the end,
he said, "Miss Luna got hurt. You can come over if you want. I'll send you the location in a bit."
"How is Luna doing?!" Jennifer asked apprehensively. "Where's her injury? Is it serious?"
"It's hard to explain it over the phone," Johannes answered. "Why don't you come over? Please ask Master Brandon to accompany you. You'll know when you get here."
Jennifer pressed on, but Johannes wouldn't give her a straight answer at all. Left with no choice, she could only end the call and rushed to Mayo Hospital with her husband.
After Johannes hung up, he looked helplessly at Austin. "I'm really sorry, Mr. Austin. I really couldn't bring myself to say it… We should just wait until Madam Jennifer comes over before telling her in detail. Madam Jennifer isn't in good health, and it'd be troubling if her condition worsens after finding out what happened. At least we have doctors here…"
"You're right." Austin nodded. "How thoughtless of me…"
With that, he looked up at the operating sign that was still lit and prayed that the surgery would end with success before Jennifer arrived.
At least Brandon and Jennifer wouldn't get so upset if Luna was out of danger, or he really didn't know how to tell them their daughter might actually die.
Alas, Lady Luck still wasn't on his side.
When the poor couple arrived, the red sign above the operating theater was still brightly lit, indicating that a surgery was still ongoing.
It was one thing for him to keep it from his uncle and aunt, but another for him to lie when his aunt was asking about it.
As soon as the couple rushed to Austin, Brandon peppered, "What happened? How did Luna get injured? Is the injury serious?"
"I'm sorry, Uncle Brandon. It's all my fault…" Austin could no longer run away but only recounted what had happened now that it had come to this.
His guilt aggravated after he was done retelling the event, and he apologized with a drooping head. "Uncle Brandon, Aunt Jennifer, I'm really sorry. I accept whatever punishment that's given to me. I just ask that you guys don't be mad anymore. I—"
"Y-You're saying that Luna… Luna might die?" Jennifer interjected with a pale countenance, her voice shaky and her body trembling.
"Not necessarily!" Austin hurriedly explained upon seeing that she didn't look right, "Luna's injuries are indeed severe, but she'll be okay if the surgery is a success. I—"
Before he could finish his words, Jennifer closed her eyes and dropped to the floor.
"Jenny!" Brandon called out anxiously as he caught her frail body.
Meanwhile, cold sweat drenched Austin's shirt as he ordered Johannes, "Quick, get the doctor!"
Johannes obliged at once, shouting for the doctor as he ran.
Very quickly, a doctor and a nurse came over to give Jennifer first aid.
Jennifer awoke very quickly and began crying as soon as she opened her eyes. "Luna… Luna…"
"Don't worry. It's going to be okay…" Brandon squeezed her hand and comforted her with red-rimmed eyes. "Our baby's a lucky girl. She'll definitely be fine. Don't scare yourself. How will our kids and I live on if something happens to you?"
"Luna… I don't want to live anymore if Luna dies…" Jennifer looked toward the operating theater, her heart wrenching while tears fell like a never-ending waterfall.
"I'm sorry, Uncle Brandon and Aunt Jennifer. It's all my fault. I…" Austin was guilt-stricken.
"No, it's not your fault. It's mine…" Jennifer looked dazedly at the operating theater with teary eyes. "I… I've always told Luna that harmony brings prosperity. I tell her that Ava doesn't know any better, and she shouldn't stoop to her level. Since likes to cause trouble, Luna should just ignore her…"
At that, she drifted her gaze to Austin. "Ava's spoiled, wilful, overbearing, pushy, and likes to bully Luna. I've always told Luna to tolerate it and put up with Ava, but what has it gotten her?!"
Jennifer grew increasingly worked up as she rambled on. She then shrieked, "I've always asked my daughter to put up with you guys, but what have you done?! You guys want her dead! Y-You guys have crossed the line!"
