I woke up with a gasp on the floor of the guild, with Ramirez doing cpr.
”Don’t worry, I’m not dead yet.” I stated, coughing a bit, remembering my meeting with so called gods. “We’ve got to get our quests done, don’t we?”
”You were dead. For 10 minutes. What do you mean by your fucking ‘don’t worry!’ You should be dead now how are you alive?” She shouted back, crazed.
”What the fuck is wrong with you? My parts are working, I’m not crying out for brains, and everyone still has their flesh attached to their body, the more important thing is Henry okay?” I responded, baffled.
”Ok, ok. He’s alright, we managed to get the goo out of him, ectoplasm apparently. But don’t you dare go off dying, You’re only dying if we give you permission soldier! I’m sorry for the reaction, it’s just that, on earth you’d be clinically dead. This world is crazy.”
”Yeah, but the important thing is that I’m alive. Anyhow, we need to find out how the fuck these quests work.” I replied, looking towards the reception desk, where May seemed to never leave. I walked towards it, intending to ask her how quests worked.
”Hi May. How do quests work?”
”Well, that’s quite simple. If you, and you alone press the button on the side of your guild marker, you get a bunch of quests popping up. You can select an infinite number at a time, but can only track one for obvious regions, this stays the same permanently, tracking means that you’ll see a yellow marker directly above where you need to go, which you alone can see, even at night. However, untracked quests don’t exactly mean you don’t make progress. For example, let’s say you’re tracking a courier quest, and I marks where you need to go, but there’s an untracked quest which specifies, kill 50 monsters over level five, you find a camp of 20 level 6 goblins, and you decide to use fire magic to burn them all. This counts as 20 in the kill monster task, and if there was another untracked quest that specified kill by burning or magic, it also advances. Quite simple. However, if you’re in a party, thee can only be one combined tracked quest which shows everyone in said party where they need to go.” She explained. “However, if one goes into a dungeon, the marker marks the exit, and will change every room you go in for a speedy exit, or, if you’re feeling brave or foolish, you can change it to where the boss of the dungeon is, essentially skipping the non essential rooms to get the best loot straight way. I wouldn’t recommend this, unless you have a glass cannon build, as its just not good to rush a dungeon, and have no clue where you’re meant to go if ambushed. Anyway, getting back on track, some quests are rank exclusive, so if you’re a dirty, you can’t access iron grade quests, as it’s a safeguard to make sure lower level players don’t face a world boss, as higher quests never tell you anything but their name and rank required.”
”Nice, so how do get an increase in rank?” I responded, knowing every drop of knowledge I milk to be extremely valuable.
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
“Ok then. This is going to be quite the mouthful. Cover your ears, rant incoming!” May exclaimed with a smile. “All adventurers start with dirt, and work their way up to emerald, after all, not all can be successful. To get from dirt to wood, you need to be at least level five, and have some higher tier dirt or lower tier wood quests under your belt. Before you say it, all ranks need a minimum level. We don't care what some people have to say. Levels do matter, if you’re level one with no skills or traits, you’re dead if you go against a bronze level monster, unless of course you have friends in literal high places, for example a few steel tier adventures, you’re dead. Getting back on track, if you’re the level threshold for a rank up, you can access lower difficulty quests for the threshold you’re currently at. Let’s say from wood to copper, if you’re at least level eleven, you can start accessing lower tier copper quests, and if you reach the threshold for the next tier without ranking up somehow, you can start accessing medium difficulty quests of copper, if you reach the threshold after that without ranking up, you’re automatically ranked up by the system, as if you’re that high, you’re definitely powerful enough, as keeping a theoretical level 4000 at dirt just because they either joined the guild a very short time ago, or they levelled up without the help of quests, or exploited a hidden feature of the system, is really stupid, as even if you have no experience in fighting or anything for that matter, 4000 skill points go a longggg way. At that point combat would be fully automated, with the amount of skills and traits you get. From auto counterattack to auto defense. The system apparently has an unlimited amount of levels and things to use the points on, though no one knows for sure, so we can only assume that either someone had a lot of patience, and still does, or the system makes up skills as you get to higher levels, with the law of diminishing returns either in full force or absolutely non existent. Ranks also help access a lot of guild things. The mini dungeon in every guild is accessible to all, while the training, accommodations and smithy are only available after a certain rank. Certain promotions are also only available at larger branches, small town branches like this promote up to bronze, city ones up to gold, and the rest can only be achieved by going to the branch. The first one, which lucky us, is in another continent. So that’s all for the rank system. I guess we’re all doing our part. Would you like to know more?”
I smirked inwardly at last part, knowing the certain movie that also had that line, one with big bugs.
”No thanks May, we’ll look through our quests now.” I replied, knowing everything she said was recorded on the little camera in all our uniforms.
After we walked a sufficient way away, Ramirez struck with a little jab. “You done talking to your girlfriend huh?”
I barely held my blush from my cheeks. “Fucking Christ, just because i talk to a woman doesn’t mean I love them.” I sighed. “Well, it looks like we have to look for a quest, and try to find a merchant one at that, see if we can peacefully interrogate them out of the locations for oil wells, and anything else of importance, uranium mines, anything radioactive, and even iron mines, if we can get the resources at a discount price, bronze coins will probably be the easiest to trade with, as it ain’t a precious material. Let’s show them marines, and all the other land forces that the regular army can do things, and well.” Nods of agreement flashed across the room, and to my surprise even the recently recovered Henry and rowdy personality of Ramirez were included. “So let’s find a few quests to do…”
