Chapter 38 - A Spurned Mother

Chapter 38 - A Spurned Mother

Steal heard the sound of cracking glass as the light erupted around them, the goblin brought up his arm to shield his face from the borderline blinding light, and after a few seconds, when he felt confident enough to see what was going on, he saw a torrent of green mist and gas crashing against the wavering, almost transparent purple bubble that surrounded them.

Kelvin's face was contorted into a pained grimace, growling out through gritted teeth. "That's what took us out earlier, I can hold this barrier for a few minutes, though after that I'm outta mana, got any ideas?"

Kor'Ak looked over the scene, he could barely see their outlines through the gas that coated the stone floor, the vague, wavering silhouttes slowly grew in number as they slowly advanced forwards, a just over a dozen of the wretched goblins now, the slapping of flesh booming through the stone as a much larger figure towered behind them, waddling along with some unknown mechanism.

A violent, gross gurgling came from the towering slab of putrid flesh, more thick blobs of pus and vile phlegm erupted from it's unseen mouth, crashing down into the green haze like miniature meteors, the sound was dulled by the barrier, but they could hear the sound of it slapping against the stone ground in a thick blob, the mist parting around it for a mere second, before swallowing it up in it's haze again.

It wasn't the globs of vile excretion that were worrying though, they were merely just gross. What was worrying were the tiny silhouettes that crawled forth from the splattered blobs, thirteen of them darted towards Kelvin's barrier, a dozen spindly legs that ended in spiny feet tapped against the floor, they sprang forwards, showing of their porcerlain white fleshy bodies, they looked similar to spiders, if you swapped it's body with a rather chubby eel, though rather than a more traditional mouth, it kept a pair of creepy, insectoid mandibles that chittered happily as they pressed forwards, tiny, slimy tails wagging behind them.

They pushed ahead of the slowly advancing Wretched, crashing against Kevlin's barrier as they stabbed at the shield with their spiny legs, mandibles trying to get a grip on the almost glassy magical shield.

"Okay, maybe it'll hold for about a minute"

Two dozen Wretched were now within five feet of the party, brandishing daggers, clubs, spears and one of them, for some unknown reason, was waving a miniscule Wretched, who was also holding a filth-crusted knife.

With their razored mandibles crashing and clawing against Kelvin's shield, Steal could only think of one thing as he looked at the angry little abominations. They were sorta cute.

Visible cracks formed like spiderwebs along the barrier as Kelvin growled to himself. "Less. Just get a plan, I'm already running out of fuel"

The goblin had an idea, but there was no way he could explain it to his humans. If it came to it, he could make his way out, maybe, but it would mean the entire point of him coming down into this horrid den of pus would be null.

Kor'Ak grinned to himself, perhaps he had an idea.

His hand went to a metal canister at his side, his other reaching into a leather bag, breaking off a chunk of dry ice.

It wasn't much of a plan, but the human knew what he was doing.

The Djaal called out to his companions "Hold your breath and drop the barrier!"

Kelvin nodded.

Steal made a self-satisfied growl, he didn't really understand what was going on, but as he saw Kor'Ak and Kelvin inhale deeply, he mirrored them.

The purple bubble expanded for a brief second, pushing the tiny eel-spiders off of it, before it vanished into a gently dust.

The vile miasma poured forwards over them, completely swallowing Steal beneath it, and flowing against the thighs of Kor'Ak and Kelvin.

The wretched growled and charged forwards. Kor'Ak's blade cut through the first to approach them, whilst a crystalline dart erupted from Kelvin's palm, a jagged crystal sprouted from the neck of the Wretched that Kelvin's palm pointed vaguely towards.

Steal ducked under one of the slimy creatures pounces, mandibles clicking together above his head, he felt sharp legs claw a thin red line in his scalp as the creature soared overhead. Steal darted forwards, he could see the entrance that ascended upwards, they just had to make it their, the Wretched could be dealt with one at a time, the heavy mist couldn't rise upwards towards them, and if that odd, sapient stack of flesh had a bone structure, it couldn't follow them through the tunnels.

Just a few feet. Just a few seconds of uninterrupted sprinting was all they needed.

It was a simple plan, there wasn't much that could go wrong.

It didn't mean that nothing could go wrong.
