"So back to Basy for a second," Brick said as he looked towards the floating spirit.
"You still didn't explain why Bucket broke the door."
"Didn't I just do that?" Basy asked annoyed.
"Yeah, you did. But I'm asking why he turned the door to literal ash?" Brick asked as he ordered his third drink. The mechanical golems Grum had set up taking his cup away and refilling it. Brick also ordered some Sausage and Chips. He still needed to have breakfast after all.
"Oh, well that's actually a much simpler story, so do you know of the town of Clappy?" Basy asked.
"Only through passing, I just know that's where half the useful stuff I find in the Drop sites goes. They pay a decent amount of coin for lots of it, though I'm not sure why someone in that town would need a book that creates hot werewolf."
Basy looked at Brick confused for a second before asking, "You actually found something like that out there?"
Brick eyed the spirit, "yeah, but I wish I hadn't. The damn thing had this wrongness about it."
"Considering this come's from the guy with a demon, I truly worry for the person with such an item."
"Yeah, well back on topic now. Why did Bucket burn the door?" Brick asked.
"Well, you see there's this tavern in Clappy..."
----------------------------------------
Basy looked at the town of Clappy with happy eyes. Well, spiritual approximations of eyes anyway.
Basy didn't see in the regular way many other people did, instead of having optic nerves that ran into a fleshy sphere that served to acquire and send the information it received to be interpreted back to the brain. Basy's eyes worked like a magical telescope.
Basy could see the mana of an object, and that information was interpreted almost instantly since Basy's 'Brain' was seeing it instead of some other object.
Basy could see the mana of people and objects. And that helped her interpret information a lot better, Basy's standards of beauty as such. Changed to match her sight, seeing the beauty of mana rather than the physical.
It just so happened that those of physical splendor happened to have mana that was of similar beauty.
Basy could also see as a human by looking through Bucket's vision, getting a copy of the information his mind interpreted.
All in all, Basy's abilities of sight was far superior to most other people.
But it still didn't let him understand the strange thing that was the 'System' and 'Probability' coming together.
Bucket had entered the town as normal as he could. Going through the main gate he traveled along the main road of the town as he made his way to the inn inside the area.
Basy had admired the beauty of the village. It was stunningly average for most people who lived in the city, but for Basy. Who had only really been exposed to religious temples, burned down cities, and filthy towns. The average town he was in had taken a remarkable new luster and beauty to it. Still, he couldn't look at everything due to how weird Basy looked, and the inherent superstition that plagued most villages.
Most still hadn't recovered enough to let people train in magic past the basic spells. Those who did were either killed or exiled from the village. Only allowed to make simple trade.
Bucket and Basy traveled to the near center of the town, it had been getting late. The afternoon was fast approaching and the three suns were drifting down to, ready to be replaced by the nine moons.
Bucket would approach the inn, not aware of what was about to happen. Yet the moment Bucket knocked on the door. A message appeared in his vision.
You have doon ERRPR!#@$*GEWIYE(%#Y Special condition activated! Shrapnel Bomb! Shrapnel Bomb: This is a once in a lifetime action, whatever the user of this condition is currently touching shall explode with enough force to tear a wall down. The remains of the wall shall transform into shrapnel, powerful enough to tear through steel armor. I know it's that time of year to turn anything into a weapon, but not this far!
The door Bucket was currently touching exploded, the door flying off its hinges and exploding into a wave of sharp pieces of wood. The pieces shredded through the person about to walk out. The mayor goody two shoe's daughter.
Stolen novel; please report.
The explosion caught her by complete surprise, the blast of sharp wood tearing through her body like a shotgun, the barrage of shrapnel turning the once fine maiden who had caught the heart's o many young shooters and who had bankrolled the creation of many new puppy shelters.
Turning her into bloody swiss cheese.
Her body was ripped open, her heart being sliced in half by the metal doorknob ripping straight into her. The slag of metal smashing into the knight behind her with brutal force. The bolt of metal tearing his entire face off.
The wooden shrapnel sliced through her, cutting off limbs. Ripping through the skin, and shattering bone.
The young woman's blood splattered across the wall, dousing several adventurers and around a dozen waiters and waitresses in gore.
Bucket looked at the carnage that had just been reaped on the woman and the knight looked. And saw the confused, startled, and traumatized men and women who witnessed the death. And did the expected. But still, a jerk move of running away as fast as possible.
Basy and Bucket ran out of town as fast as they could. Slamming into simple farmers and tailers and blacksmiths along the way. Sending them careening down onto the ground.
Bucket and Basy soon made it out of town and made their way to the city closest to Clappy.
----------------------------------------
Brick looked at Basy for a long minute.
Like a really long minute.
So long you could hear the universe trying to make it ten minutes or an hour.
Basy started to get uncomfortable, and then downright nervous till Brick finally said something. "Let me get this straight, Bucket here destroyed the door to this mighty fine inn because he thought that little incident happened again?" Brick asked.
"Um, yeah?" Basy said, his tone wavering as Brick seemed to drill holes into her spirit.
"All, right, that checks out," Brick said as he ate some Sausage and Chips he had gotten during the middle of Basy's tale.
"Wait really? You don't think this was some poor excuse to cover up the murder of a powerful political figure in the town of Clappy?" Basy asked.
"Believe me, I've witnessed some of the same things you have. Though I doubt mine could compare, plus, you guys don't look like the type to be assassins. Hell, you went here of all places. The city that would most likely be checked for you."
Basy considered Brick's words. They did make sense, what person would make such a flimsy excuse in the first place, plus Bucket hadn't dismissed the message yet. So it was still there at the inn. And they had headed to the place most people would check for incase of a murderer.
So it made a weird kind of sense why Brick believed them.
Brick took the drink Grum's golems offered him and turned towards Seften. Who was still in his own thoughts about GOOD. Might as well ask him about it.
"Hey Seften, what exactly is GOOD?" Brick asked.
Seften sighed at Brick's question. Before answering, "It's an acronym. It stands for Great Overpowered Onslaught Destroyers. It's the part of Flappy's church that tries to exterminate everyone who doesn't follow Flappy's religion. They fought the BAD. Best Adventuring Delvers a good few decades ago."
Brick's eyes widened as he turned to look at Bucket and Basy again. Basy's energy mimicked the thought of surprise to a small degree. He had likely known some of what Seften was saying. Brick guessed it made sense when Bucket's class was Crusading War Criminal.
Seften continued, "GOOD was destroyed by the BAD when they attempted a massive charge straight into BAD's defenses. Most of them died but a few escaped. They made trouble for themselves for the most part before splitting and breaking apart over minute differences and killing each other."
Seften looked at Bucket, "My best guess at this guy, he was born and raised as a child soldier for one of those splinters and did some questionable things. His splinter was either destroyed or didn't want to have someone with his class on them publically, so he left."
Basy nodded, "The latter guess is correct. I think he's been in denial for this whole thing."
Brick looked at both of them, his memories drifting to the front of his mind. He gripped his cup and downed it all in one gulp. No time to reminisce.
----------------------------------------
Breanna looked at the massive auditorium she and everyone else had gathered in.
The death of Ezilaben had been a rumor for her. Most others still hadn't believed it.
But slowly more and more people were starting to fear the worst.
That fear had been justified. Breanna looked towards the mayor, his face red. And his eyes quacking with loss and anger. He cleared his throat. "As some of you may not know. My daughter passed suddenly and tragically two days ago by an unprovoked attack. She died instantly, but for a few seconds, her body still functioned. The pain she felt was unimaginable."
The mayor choked, tears dripping down his face and soaking themselves into the wood beneath him.
"But we must soldier on, not only to make sure we live up to her name. But to also catch and deal justice to the perpetrator responsible for this tragedy. Each of you will travel along several paths to search for this killer. We only know that they are a follower of Flappy and that they wear a Bucket on their head."
The mayor took a trembling gulp. "Search for the killer of my daughter, brave adventurers. Whoever finds the man or woman responsible will receive a hundred, no, a thousand gold for their trouble."
The crowd in the auditorium whispered and muttered after the mayor showed he had nothing more to say. Groups formed and headed to the guild board or other areas of information. Where they could find the routes and paths the killer was likely to take.
Breanna smiled as she looked at her pistol, embalmed with ancient draconic runes invisible to all but her eyes. Her draconic hand twitched at the trigger.
It was time to hunt.
