Chapter 3
Elsa awoke the next morning, rising from her bed. Almost immediately, the glare of the sunlight coming from the reflections of the numerous shapes in the ice palace made her close her eyes and wince.
She moved a hand up to her face to block out the sun and looked around her bedroom. The Snow Queen realized snow and ice were brighter whenever sunlight shined upon them.
"Never look at the sun. All that brightness can blind you for good," Elsa reminded herself.
She rose from her bed and looked at the morning sun from her balcony. After observing the scenery before her for a few moments, she returned inside and looked around.
"Jack? Where are you?" Elsa called out.
A moment later, Jack Frost returned, clutching his staff and a brown paper bag. He placed his staff against the wall in such a way that it would not fall over.
"Good morning, Elsa. I hope you slept well," Jack greeted her before placing the bag on the bed.
"Good morning, Jack," Elsa greeted with a smile, before looking at the bag on her bed. "What are those?"
"Breakfast. Here, you can have the first choice. I got these for you, after all," Jack replied before picking up the bag and holding it out to her.
Elsa have him a curious look before taking the bag from him and peering inside.
"Are these pastries?" the Ice Queen asked.
"Yes. They are only some of the finest pastries in the world, from Portugal! They have this amazing bakery there," Jack explained before continuing, "When I looked around the castle, I noticed that you did not really have anything to eat. I thought these would be a perfect breakfast for you."
She stared at Jack for a moment before she giggled.
"You flew all the way to Portugal to get pastries for me? Portugal is a long way from here, Jack," Elsa pointed out with an amused look.
Jack continued smiling at her and nudged the bag.
"Yes, Portugal is far away, but getting some of the best pastries on the planet is worth it," Jack responded. "You must try one of these. I can assure you that you will enjoy it."
"Really?" Elsa teased with a grin.
"I guarantee it," Jack replied with a wink.
The Snow Queen blushed before giggling slightly and reaching into the bag. She withdrew one of the flaky pastries inside.
Intrigued, Elsa rotated the pastry around to get a closer look. "This looks like an apple pastry."
Jack decided to have a pastry himself and placed his hand into the bag. When he saw the flavor he picked, he grinned broadly.
"Strawberry. One of my favorite flavors, along with cherry," Jack said before admiring it and taking a huge bite.
Elsa smiled at him before taking a small bite out of her pastry. While it was far from the biggest bite, it was enough to get a good amount of apple flavor from the baked good.
"This is delicious Jack. You chose well," Elsa praised before having another bite.
After swallowing, Jack beamed. "Only the best for the Queen of Arendelle." He then bowed respectfully.
"I appreciate it, Jack. Not only do these pastries taste good, but they also smell good too. Whoever baked these did a great job," the Snow Queen stated.
"They sure did. I would travel anywhere just to get you only the finest foods on the planet," Jack declared with determination.
Elsa giggled. "Thank you, Jack."
Jack nodded with a smile. "Of course."
OoOoOoOoOoO
Elsa and Jack ate the rest of their breakfast in silence. After they were done eating, Elsa noticed that her hair was a little messy. Thus, she brushed it for a little bit.
Once Elsa had finished brushing her hair, an idea came to Jack's mind.
"I know what we can do today!" he exclaimed before asking, "Have you ever been to other parts of the country before?"
Elsa shook her head. "I have never left Arendelle before."
Jack's eyes widened. "Not once?"
"Not once," Elsa repeated in confirmation.
"I was thinking that maybe we could go to the capital of Norway: Christiania!" Jack exclaimed.
"While I have never been to Christiania, I have heard stories from the townspeople of Arendelle who have been there before. They have said it is a much larger kingdom than Arendelle," Elsa said. "Going to Christiania would certainly be an adventure."
"Yes," Jack replied before adding, "I can promise you that it will be fun. If you would like to be back here by tonight, I can make sure we do not stay out too late."
"I would appreciate that. Thank you," Elsa said.
"Anything for you, Elsa," Jack replied with a grin as he noticed a stray strand of her hair on her face. He gently reached out and brushed the strand of her hair behind her ear.
"Before we set off, I would like you to promise me something Jack," Elsa said.
"Of course, Elsa. Anything," Jack replied as he listened attentively.
"Promise me that you will not let me fall," Elsa stated.
Jack gave her a reassuring smile. "I would never let you fall."
The Snow Queen breathed a sigh of relief.
"Are you ready for an adventure?" Jack asked.
"Ready," Elsa responded as Jack slipped an arm around her waist and pulled her close. As he did, Jack gave her a mischievous grin, making her blush slightly.
They then took off, soaring out of the room and into the clear, bright morning sky.
OoOoOoOoOoO

After beholding the same sights as the night prior, Elsa saw that Jack was leading her to an area she had never been to before.
The Snow Queen could see large forests, and some other settlements in the area. She marveled at what she saw below.
"One thing that is particularly neat in Christiania is the architecture," Jack explained. "I was thinking that maybe we could get you a nice sculpture while we are there."
He smiled at her.
Elsa then realized something.
"Jack?" Elsa said.
"What is it, Elsa?" Jack replied, looking at her.
"I just realized that I do not have any money," Elsa stated, realizing her dress did not have pockets. "Do you have any money by chance?"
He quirked a brow at her before shaking his head. "I have not had a reason to need money."
The Ice Queen raised an eyebrow at him. "Let me guess. I assume you just took the pastries without paying for them?"
Jack nodded his head in shame. "Yes, I did. I took the rejected pastries from the back of the bakery."
While Elsa saw the guilty look on his face, she still scowled at him. She felt slightly reprehensible since her breakfast consisted of stolen baked goods.
"Could we go back, please? I would like to get something to pay for everything we buy. Stealing anything would make me feel terrible," Elsa said.
With a dramatic sigh, Jack did as she requested. He stopped and turned around, heading back to the ice castle.
As they approached the ice palace, Elsa made a gesture towards Arendelle. "I do not think I have nearly enough money in the ice palace. If I would like to be able to afford anything, I will need a lot more than I brought with me."
Jack could not help but chuckle as they headed towards the castle in Arendelle. It seemed that she was planning to do more shopping than he initially thought.
OoOoOoOoOoO
Soon Elsa and Jack arrived just outside the balcony of her room. Jack made sure that she could get down onto the balcony safely.
He let go of her once they were on the balcony, allowing the Ice Queen to open the door that led to her room.
While Elsa thought about going to her office, she was worried that Anna would find her there and reprimand her for coming back so soon. Another thing that Elsa was concerned about was having to explain leaving again after just getting back. Thus, she decided to just look for some money in her room.
"This should not take too long," Elsa stated as she began to look through her drawers, searching for money.
"That is a lot of work just for some money," Jack expressed as he walked into her room.
Elsa grinned as she shook her head before finding a coin purse with money in it. She checked to make sure there was enough money in there. Feeling that it would be enough for the trip, she fitted the purse around her waist with the long, wide belt. She made sure to freeze it in place; Elsa did not want it to get loose on their flight.
Once she was sure she had everything she needed, Elsa turned and beamed at Jack. She saw him smiling back while leaning on his staff.
"Alright Jack. I am ready to go now," Elsa said as she walked towards him.
"Are you sure about that?" he asked. "Because you were not so ready last time."
"Yes, I am sure," she replied, crossing her arms with a small scowl.
Jack could not help but chuckle at the look on Elsa's face. He stepped towards her before slipping an arm around her.
"Elsa, you need to learn to relax. I was only joking with you," Jack stated with a smirk.
The Snow Queen sighed before shaking her head with a smile. "I had a pretty good idea. Anyway, shall we head out now?"
Jack nodded with a grin. "Yes, we shall."
When the two were out on the balcony, they soared high into the sky. As they rushed upwards, the wind pulled the door shut behind them. Elsa let out a sigh as they settled into their flight. Jack chuckled beside her.
"Are you ready to see Christiania and all of its wonders?" Jack asked with a smile.
"Yes, I am," Elsa replied, beaming.
OoOoOoOoOoO
Elsa and Jack were laughing as they flew along. They went further than they did before returning and saw more forests and settlements along the way.
From time to time, they also saw numerous bodies of water, such as lakes, rivers, and bays leading out to Skagerrak. When Elsa was looking out to the strait, she thought there was land on the distant horizon. Having never traveled by sea herself, the Snow Queen was curious as to what it was like for those who did. She could not help but wonder what it was like for those traveling on the vast bodies of water to see the tiniest details of land in the distance and watch it increase in size as one got closer.
The Ice Queen was smiling at Jack. She was excited to see what the capital of Norway had to offer. Elsa was looking forward to seeing a new place, a new environment, and a new atmosphere.
"I was thinking that when we get to Christiania, we can go see the Royal Palace," Jack suggested.
"Yes please. Then maybe we can explore the rest of Christiania after seeing the palace?" Elsa asked.
"That sounds like a good plan," Jack responded with a grin.
The Snow Queen then thought of something. "I was just thinking. What if someone saw me while you are flying me around?"
He thought about that for a moment before grinning at her. "You could just say that you are a fairy."
"Jack!" Elsa exclaimed in dismay.
Jack chuckled. "What? You could make yourself a nice pair of wings with your powers."
She scowled at him but ended up laughing. "I will not be making any wings, Jack."
He chuckled, continuing to fly onwards over the last few miles that remained until Christiania.
As they approached Christiania, Jack thought of how to get her into the city without anyone seeing Elsa floating down from the heavens.
"Hey, Elsa?" Jack asked.
"Yes, Jack?" Elsa responded.
"You would not mind walking for a little bit, right?" he inquired.
"No, I would not mind. Why do you ask?" she replied, looking up at him.
"Christiania is much larger than Arendelle, and being the capital, it is busy. Therefore, I think it would be a good idea to land just outside the city. I do not believe there is anywhere that you would not get noticed immediately," Jack explained.
Elsa nodded in understanding, looking ahead to the city before them.
"I do not mind walking a little bit," she stated.
Jack grinned as he flew them to an area outside the city, within a grove of trees. He set them down gently, ensuring Elsa was steady on her feet before letting go of her.
The Snow Queen looked around as she breathed in the fresh air.
"This is breathtaking, if I must say," Elsa stated.
"It is," Jack replied, nodding in agreement.
As they approached the entrance to Christiania, a thought came to Jack's mind. "I think you should not introduce yourself as the Queen of Arendelle."
"Why not?" Elsa inquired.
Jack contemplated for a moment before he came up with an answer. "Considering that you are a Queen who will be traveling to a different kingdom alone without an announcement of your arrival, I think that you should keep your identity a secret."
The Ice Queen nodded in understanding. "I can work with that."
Upon entering the city, Elsa nodded politely to anyone who greeted her. Jack would float upwards from time to time to keep track of their location within the city.
As she walked, Elsa browsed through the shops. She made a note to visit the shops after seeing the Royal Palace. Elsa was eager to see what kind of treasures she would find within them.
Soon, the Royal Palace came into view. As Elsa approached the building, a fellow standing outside stopped her.
"I am sorry, ma'am, but I cannot let you enter the palace. It is still under construction as we speak," the man said.
Elsa sighed. While dismayed that she would not be able to see what the inside of the palace looked like, she nodded in understanding. "How long will it be until the palace is completed, sir?"
The man sighed. He gave her an apologetic look. "Unfortunately, I cannot say for sure when the palace will be done. The proposal to build a royal residence in Christiania was raised in the Storting for the first time in 1821. It was not until the following year that it was followed up on, when the King himself proposed it to the Storting. Despite the pressures on Norway's economy, the Storting allocated a large sum of money for the work, and in 1823 a commission was assigned to oversee the sale of government bonds to finance the project and to have overall responsibility in matters concerning the building. Work on the site had started in 1824, and King Charles III John laid the foundation stone at the intended site of the altar in the Royal Chapel on October 1, 1825. Despite the completion of the palace foundations two years later, there was a period between 1827 and 1833 when there was no work done on the palace. This was due to how costly the foundations were, and the Storting not willing to grant any further funds for the palace. Since the budget was exceeded, the building plan had to be revised. It was four years ago that the exterior of the building was completed. The interior is still being worked on. I have a feeling that if it were not for the six-year layoff, there is a chance the palace would have been completed by now."
The Snow Queen nodded, appreciating the man's explanation. "Who is the architect for the palace?"
"His name is Hans Linstow, ma'am. He has traveled to Denmark and Germany to find inspiration for what the interior rooms should look like," the man explained.
"Thank you for the information," Elsa replied.
"Of course. Sorry I could not be of more help," the man smiled apologetically.
"You have nothing to be sorry about. I would like to thank you for taking the time to explain what is going on with the palace," the Snow Queen replied, smiling.
"Of course, ma'am. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day," the man stated.
"You too," Elsa responded as the man waved goodbye. She then made her way back into the city.
"That is unfortunate. I did not know they were still working on the palace," Jack said before looking at Elsa remorsefully. "I am sorry to have wasted your time. If only I had known that the palace had not been completed yet."
Elsa only giggled with a smile. "Jack, you have nothing to apologize for. It was still nice to see the palace, even if we could not enter it. Hopefully, we will get a chance to see what the interior looks like someday."
"I hope so too," Jack answered, his remorseful look replaced with a smile. "Anyway, what would you like to do now? Some shopping? Get something to eat?"
"I was thinking of getting something to eat. That way I will have the energy to go shopping," Elsa decided.
He grinned. "Then I will scour the area for some good places to eat."
Jack led her throughout the central area of Christiania, entering numerous restaurants to smell them before he came back out to give Elsa descriptions. After some searching, Jack located a small café.
"This place looks good. It smells good, too," Jack stated.
Elsa smelled the air, and the aroma of freshly baked goods came to her nose.
"I will take your word for it," Elsa replied as he guided her inside.
