Chapter 2
Elsa and Jack sat in chairs across from each other, a table in between them. They were in Elsa's bedroom while Jack told Elsa his life story. He explained how he had awakened inside of an icy lake and only the Man in the Moon spoke to him. She felt bad for him after he elaborated on how he had been all alone for the last several decades. While he had brought fun to a multitude of people, no one believed in him. Therefore, Jack never received a thank you from anyone. Elsa beamed, imagining going to all the magnificent places he had traveled to. As he spoke, the Snow Queen noticed Jack had blue eyes, just like her. She thought about how Jack's eyes would sparkle as he flew and frosted any areas behind him to the amusement of the children and the dismay of the adults.
"There is no way you could be responsible for winter everywhere, right?" Elsa asked.
"Not all of it," Jack admitted. "Mother Nature is responsible for most of it. I just try my best to get involved in any way possible. It is too much fun not to play my part."
Elsa nodded in agreement. "Has there been anyone who believed in you?" she wondered.
Jack shook his head solemnly. "No, unfortunately. For a long time, all I did was travel the world by myself, doing my duties while never being noticed. You are the first person to ever see me."
Elsa's eyes widened. "You mean to tell me you were never seen by anyone until we met?"
Jack nodded. "Yes."
The Ice Queen gave Jack a sympathetic look. It must have been very hard on him to be around people, yet not even one could see him. Being alone for thirteen years took a toll on Elsa. However, she could not even imagine being alone for an entire lifetime.
"I noticed you have blue eyes," Elsa said as she carefully inspected Jack's eyes.
"You do as well," Jack responded, grinning. "They remind me of the clear blue sky."
"I will take that as a compliment. Thank you," the Snow Queen stated with a silent giggle.
"Of course, it is," Jack confirmed with a nod of approval.
"You have powers over ice and snow, just like me, and you can fly. What else can you do?" Elsa wondered.
Jack crossed his arms as he thought about it for a moment. "There are a lot of things I can do, actually."
"Such as?" Elsa inquired, curious what Jack was thinking about.
"Showing people how to have fun," Jack responded with a smile. "It looks like you could use a little fun yourself."
"Fun?" Elsa asked cautiously. "What kind of fun do you have in mind?"
Jack stood up, jumped into the air, and spun around a few times. "There are so many things we can do!" he exclaimed as he flew out to the balcony.
Elsa hesitantly followed him as he flew around and then landed on the balcony in front of her.
"Perhaps I can show you around?" Jack suggested as he took a few steps towards the Ice Queen.
Elsa glanced at the moonlit valley below. She could not remember ever leaving Arendelle. The Snow Queen turned around and was startled when Jack appeared before her. Jack looked at Elsa attentively, studying her. His blue eyes were full of mischief and fun as he smiled at Elsa. Jack could not remember seeing anyone so beautiful. The Snow Queen was the most beautiful woman he had ever laid his eyes on.
Elsa looked back down at the valley before her and then she looked at the sky. There was not a single cloud in the sky. She felt her shoulders relax before she felt something around her waist.
Elsa saw that Jack had his arm around her waist. She gasped in surprise as she felt her feet leave the ground, jostling as she wrapped her arms tightly around Jack's neck. The Snow Queen looked around as Jack lifted them further and further from the ground.
Jack smiled at her, nodding his head for her to look around them.
"Is this the first time you have flown with someone?" Elsa asked as she grabbed his cloak to avoid falling.
Jack chuckled as he nodded. "Yes. You are the first person who has ever flown with me."
He spun around, causing Elsa to yelp and tighten her grip on his cloak. Jack tightened his arm around her.
"Oh dear," Elsa breathed as she moved her head to look at what was below them. They lowered to the treetops. "Please do not drop me, Jack. I feel like I would get badly injured from a fall this high."
Jack smiled sincerely at her. "I would never drop you, Elsa. You are safe with me."
Elsa slowly calmed down when she was sure she would not fall. The peaceful atmosphere of the moon in the sky and the clear, calm night also helped her relax.
They made their way toward the palace in Arendelle. As they did, Elsa carefully took one hand away from Jack, telling him of everything in the kingdom and the surrounding land. Jack made sure to keep a firm grip on her. At one point, they passed Wandering Oaken's Trading Post and Sauna. Elsa told Jack about how she did not feel well on her sister's birthday, and how Oaken recommended some cold medicine for her to feel better. The medicine only made her cold worse at first, but after a few days, it made her feel much better. Her recovery time was quicker thanks to Anna taking care of her.
They arrived at the Arendelle castle. As they flew around the palace, Elsa explained how she felt about ruling Arendelle and the history of the kingdom and the castle.
"How does it feel living such an extravagant lifestyle?" Jack asked as he and Elsa gently landed on one of the tallest spires of the castle. They were gazing at the quiet harbor below them.
"It may sound wonderful, but it is truly not as grand as you may think," she replied, before she went silent.
Jack was starting to get concerned about her sudden silence. "Is everything alright?"

Elsa thought about telling Jack what happened between her and Anna when they were children. The Snow Queen decided he would understand.
"When I was a little girl, me and my family were normal and happy. My sister Anna and I would always play together like the best of friends. She loved my powers. We would build snowmen, have snowballs fights, and anything else we could think of," Elsa elaborated.
Jack smiled. "It sounds like you and your sister got along very well with each other."
"Yes, we did," Elsa responded, grinning. Her smile faded when she continued her story, "One morning, when I was eight years old, Anna woke me up. At first, I just wanted to get some sleep, but I could not resist when she suggested we build a snowman. We ran down the stairs to the castle ballroom to play. I began to cast snow everywhere and turned the floor into ice. It seemed like we would have a wonderful time like we always did. Unfortunately, it did not end so well. Anna started jumping from the piles of snow I was creating. She was going too fast for me to keep up with her. As I was about to summon another pile of snow to keep her from falling, I slipped and fell onto the ice. Anna jumped off the last platform, and I desperately tried to soften her fall. Instead, I accidentally hit her in the head with my powers. She was unconscious. I thought I killed her." Tears formed in her eyes at the horrifying memory.
Stunned at what he heard, Jack gently placed his free hand on Elsa's shoulder, trying to comfort her. The Snow Queen looked up and saw the look of concern on Jack's face.
She continued, "I called for my parents, who came running into the ballroom. We went to the Valley of the Trolls. My father begged them to help Anna, while my mother noticed how cold Anna was. I understood that no one could tolerate the cold as much as I could. While the trolls were able to save her, it came at the cost of taking away any memory she had of my powers. After that, I was locked away in my room for thirteen years."
Jack's worry only increased when she finished her story. "You were locked away? How could your parents do such a thing to you?"
Elsa sighed. "I agreed with them. At the time, I was terrified of hurting Anna or anyone else with my powers. I knew staying in my room and away from people was the best way to keep them safe from harm. My father closed the gates to the castle, sent away the majority of the staff, until it was only me, Anna, and my parents. Anna would come and knock on my door every morning. She would beg me to come out and play with her, and I told her to go away every time, fearful of possibly hurting her again. My father would try to help me control my powers, even though he did not understand them. I know he meant well, as he was worried about me. My mother would read bedtime stories to me, while keeping her distance."
"That was my daily life until I was eighteen years old," Elsa finished.
"What happened when you were eighteen, if you do not mind me asking?" Jack asked, encouraging Elsa to continue.
"My parents decided to find out the truth about my powers. While they were on a voyage, a thunderstorm capsized their ship. I never saw them again," Elsa said, tears threatening to fall from her eyes.
One eventually did fall. Jack noticed this and gently brushed it away with the thumb of his hand. "I am very sorry about your parents. It must have been hard on you and your sister."
"I could not even attend their funeral. With my powers still out of control, all I could do was watch from my window. I did not leave my room until last year, when I was crowned Queen of Arendelle," Elsa explained.
"Did you leave your room because you did not have a choice?" Jack wondered.
"Yes. I did not want to hurt anyone, but I had come of age," Elsa stated before she noticed something in Jack's hand. "What do you have there?"
Jack smiled before he revealed a flower made of ice. "This."
"Oh wow. This is beautiful, Jack," the Snow Queen smiled. She made a move to take the ice flower, but Jack instead placed it in her hair.
"That flower looks good on you," Jack stated with a chuckle.
"Thank you, Jack. This is very nice of you," Elsa replied with a smile.
"You are welcome, Elsa," Jack responded with a nod, grinning. "It seems you are doing well now."
"Things are indeed well as we speak. However, my reign did not have a happy beginning," Elsa said.
Jack frowned. "What happened?"
"I accidentally froze the kingdom during the warmest time of the year. As you can probably guessed, the people of Arendelle did not like it," Elsa explained.
"You froze the kingdom?" Jack stated with wide eyes. "I told everyone I did not do it, but no matter what I said, no one believed me."
Elsa smiled. "At least it all worked out in the end. Not only has my bond with my sister been restored, but I have learned how to control my powers."
"How did you learn to control them?" Jack wondered.
"Through love, as it is the warmest emotion. I love my sister more than anything, and I realized an act of true love would thaw a frozen heart. Only it was not me, it was Olaf who helped me understand that," Elsa explained.
"Olaf? Who is Olaf?" Jack asked.
"A snowman I created with my powers. When I first created him, I did not know I had brought him to life. I never thought I would be able to create living beings out of snow," Elsa elaborated.
Jack smiled, impressed. "It sounds like you can do a lot of amazing things with your powers. You created a living snowman and an ice palace with them. I must say, I am impressed."
Elsa beamed. "Thank you, Jack."
"Of course, Elsa," Jack replied with a smile.
The Ice Queen moved a hand over her mouth as she yawned. "I am getting tired. It is getting late, and I did not realize how long we have been out here."
"Would you like for me to take you back to your ice palace?" Jack offered.
"Yes please," Elsa replied.
Jack smiled as he lifted his staff and sent them both into the air. Elsa gasped as the wind rushed by them. The ice flower slipped from Elsa's hair. She tried to grab it, but it fell too far out of her reach before she could.
"Oh no! The flower! I am sorry about that," Elsa stated, remorse in her voice.
Jack gave her a reassuring grin. "You have nothing to worry about, Elsa. I could always make you another one. Glad you liked it, though."
As they flew north, Jack looked down at her. "What did you think? Did you have fun?"
"Yes. I had a great time, Jack. Thank you," Elsa stated, smiling.
"Of course," Jack responded with a grin. "Wait until you see what I have in mind for us tomorrow."
"What is it?" Elsa wondered.
"I was thinking we could explore the area north of your ice palace tomorrow. Then we could possibly go somewhere else: England, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Iceland, or even North America!" Jack exclaimed.
Elsa smiled at Jack's excitement. Her smiled faded after a moment though. "As fun as visiting those places sounds, unfortunately, I cannot do all that. I only have a few more days before I have to return to Arendelle and get back to work. The kingdom can only do so much without me. I am already afraid of how much I will need to catch up on when I return," Elsa elaborated.
Jack stared at her for a long moment before an idea came to his mind. "Well then, in that case, we will have to make sure we make the most of it, right?"
"Of course," Elsa replied in agreement.
They landed on the lower balcony of the ice castle. Elsa placed a hand on Jack's shoulder.
"I would like to thank you again for the fun today, Jack. It has been a long time since I had this much fun," Elsa told him, beaming.
Jack smiled and nodded. "Of course, Elsa. Tomorrow will be more fun though. Just wait."
"I am looking forward to it," the Snow Queen responded as they made their way towards the bedroom of the palace.
"Do you sleep at all yourself?" Elsa wondered.
Jack shook his head politely. "Not really. I do not need to sleep. Whenever I do, it is usually only because I am bored. Same thing with eating and drinking. I do not have to do either one to survive. Whenever I eat, it is mostly sweets I consume."
Elsa nodded in understanding. She had a feeling, since Jack was a spirit, he did not need to eat, drink, or sleep to survive. The Ice Queen, on the other hand, knew she needed to do all three to ensure her survival.
The two soon reached the entrance to her bedroom. Jack smiled as he watched Elsa enter her bedroom.
"If you ever need anything from me, just let me know. I will stay in the palace to make sure everything is in order," Jack said, smiling at her.
Elsa smiled back. "Thank you, Jack. Good night."
"Good night, Elsa. I will see you in the morning," Jack replied as he waved to the Ice Queen.
The Snow Queen waved back as she gently closed her door to get some sleep.
Jack flew around the palace, extinguishing all the candles. Once he put all the candles out, he was on the uppermost level of the castle.
Jack thought about Elsa. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever laid his eyes on. Her icy blue eyes had a warmth in them which reminded him of her warm heart. He also liked how even-tempered the Snow Queen was. Elsa seemed very gentle, and like she only acted aggressively when it was necessary.
Jack looked down upon the kingdom far below. He saw that almost all the lights were off in the kingdom. Most of the residents were asleep because it was very late at night.
He was looking forward to seeing more of Arendelle when Elsa had to return. It seemed like a prosperous kingdom. Jack had no doubt Elsa was a fair and just ruler of her people.
Then a thought hit him. Elsa was the only person who believed in him and could see him. Jack assumed no one else in the kingdom believed in him. He did not know if any of Arendelle's residents had even heard of him.
Jack realized it was something he could worry about at another time. What he was looking forward to the most was spending more time with Elsa. Jack smiled. He felt he could come up with something even more fun tomorrow.
