Chapter 24: A Culinary Collaboration
The next morning, Ashi arrived at the office with renewed determination. She clutched the ticket to the food competition tightly in her hand. As she settled into her desk, she couldn’t help but think about the challenges ahead.
Her thoughts were interrupted when Haari walked in, carrying a stack of recipe books. He flashed a bright smile as he approached Ashi’s desk.
“Morning, Nicawa-san!” Haari greeted. “Ready for our first prep session?”
“Good morning, Kichiro-san,” Ashi replied, her nervousness palpable. “I’m a bit anxious, but I’m ready.”
“Great! I’ve been researching some ideas, and I think we should start by narrowing down the recipes. Do you have any particular dishes in mind that you’d like to prepare?” Haari asked, laying out the book.
Ashi hesitated for a moment, then said, “I was thinking of making my grandma’s signature curry and some homemade pickles. They’re traditional dishes, but they mean a lot to me.”
Haari’s eyes lit up. “Those sound fantastic! Traditional dishes often have a unique appeal. Let’s start by refining the recipes and then we can work on presentation.”
As the days passed, Haari and Ashi worked closely together, testing and perfecting their dishes.
One week later.
They spent evenings at Ashi’s apartment, experimenting with ingredients and techniques. Haari’s enthusiasm was infectious, and Ashi found herself more confident with each passing day.
During one of their cooking sessions, Haari glanced at Ashi as she stirred a pot of curry. “You know, Nicawa-san, it’s amazing how dedicated you are to this. I can see why your dishes are so special.”
Ashi smiled, looking up from her work. “Thank you. It means a lot to hear that. My grandma always said that cooking with love makes all the difference.”
Haari nodded thoughtfully. “I can tell you put a lot of love into your cooking. It’s not just about the flavors; it’s the care and effort you put into each dish.”
Their conversation was interrupted by a sudden knock on the door. When Rafta and Oki arrived, Ashi greeted them at the door. “Welcome, Densi-san, Oki-san!”
“Sorry to interrupt,” Rafta said, stepping inside. “I just wanted to check in on you two. How’s the preparation going?”
“Pretty well, actually,” Haari replied. “We’ve been working hard and refining the recipes. Ashi’s cooking is amazing.”
Rafta’s gaze shifted to Ashi. “I’ve heard great things about your dishes, Nicawa-san. I’m sure you’ll do great in the competition.”
“Thank you, Densi-san,” Ashi said, her cheeks flushing slightly. “I hope so.”
Oki smiled warmly. “Hi, Ashi! I’m excited to see how everything’s coming along. I brought some extra spices and ingredients just in case.”
Rafta, carrying a bag of supplies, nodded in agreement. “I thought it might be helpful. We’re here to support you in any way we can.”
Ashi ushered them inside and led them to the kitchen. “Please, make yourselves comfortable. I’m just about to start on the final preparations. Oki-san, could you help me with the curry? I’m a bit behind on timing.”
“Of course!” Oki said, rolling up her sleeves. “Just let me know what you need.”
Rafta, looking around at the bustling kitchen, spotted an empty chair and made himself comfortable. “I’ll sit here and try to stay out of the way. It looks like you two have everything under control.”
Haari, who had been busy organizing the kitchen, took a brief pause and joined Rafta. He settled into the chair next to him. “Hey, Rafta. How’s it going?”
Rafta, stretching his legs and relaxing, replied, “Not bad. Just taking a moment to breathe. You and Ashi have been working so hard. I’m impressed with how dedicated you both are.”
“Yeah,” Haari said, leaning back and looking over at the kitchen. “She’s been incredible. I didn’t realize how much effort goes into preparing for something like this. I’m glad we’re able to help out.”

Rafta chuckled softly. “I think it’s great how you’ve taken on the role of cheerleader. It’s obvious that you care a lot about her and her success.”
Haari looked thoughtful. “I do. Nicawa-san’s not just a colleague; she’s become a good friend. It’s been rewarding seeing her gain confidence and improve.”
“True,” Rafta agreed, watching Ashi and Oki work. “It’s amazing how much a supportive environment can boost someone’s spirits. And I have to say, I’m looking forward to tasting the results of all this hard work.”
Haari grinned. “Same here. Nicawa-san, cooking is always impressive. I can’t wait to see how the competition goes.”
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Oki and Ashi were deeply engrossed in their task. Oki was carefully chopping vegetables while Ashi stirred the pot of curry.
“You’re doing great, Ashi,” Oki said, glancing over. “This curry smells amazing. What’s your secret?”
Ashi smiled, her cheeks flushing slightly. “It’s actually a recipe from my grandmother. She always used to say that the key is to cook with love and patience.”
Oki nodded, her eyes sparkling. “I can definitely smell the love in it. It’s already starting to smell incredible. Do you have any special tricks for the perfect flavor?”
Ashi shrugged playfully. “Not really. Just a lot of tasting and adjusting. Sometimes it’s about trusting your instincts more than following a strict recipe.”
Oki grinned. “I like that approach. It’s what makes home-cooked meals so special.”
Ashi looked at her gratefully. “Thank you, Oki-san. Your help means a lot to me. I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the preparations, and having your support really helps.”
Oki waved her hand dismissively. “Don’t mention it. We’re all friends here, and I’m happy to help out. Plus, I’ve always enjoyed cooking, so this is a fun experience for me.”
As they continued working, Oki kept the conversation light and encouraging. “So, Ashi, what are you most excited about for the competition?”
Ashi paused for a moment, thinking. “I’ve always loved cooking, and it was something my grandma and I did together. When I saw the advertisement for the competition, I felt like it was a chance to honor her memory and share something I love with others.”
“That’s a beautiful reason,” Oki said, her voice full of admiration. “I’m sure your grandma would be proud.”
Ashi’s eyes softened. “I hope so. It’s been a lot of work, but it’s worth it to share a piece of my family’s tradition.”
As the cooking continued, the kitchen filled with laughter and conversation. Oki and Ashi worked side by side, preparing the final touches on their dishes.
Ashi looked at the clock and then at Oki. “We’re almost ready. How about we set the table and get everything ready for a meal?”
Oki nodded enthusiastically. “Sounds great. Let’s make sure everything is perfect.”
They set the table with care, arranging the dishes and utensils neatly. Oki called out to Rafta and Haari, “Hey, would you two like to join us for a meal? I’d like to thank you for all your help.”.
Rafta and Haari looked at each other, surprised. “Are you sure, Nicawa-san?” Rafta asked. “We don’t want to be a burden.”
Ashi waved her hand dismissively. “No trouble at all! You’ve both been so supportive. I’d like to thank you by sharing this meal with you. It’s the least I can do.”
Haari, looking pleased, added, “I agree. It’d be great to enjoy a meal together. We’ve been working so hard; it’s nice to take a break.”
Ashi helped set the table while Ashi dished out the curry and accompanying sides. As they all gathered around the table, the atmosphere was warm and cheerful.
As they sat down, the room was filled with the sounds of clinking cutlery and cheerful conversation. Ashi served the curry and the side dishes, and everyone began to eat.
“This curry is fantastic,” Rafta said, taking a bite and looking impressed. “Nicawa-san, you’ve outdone yourself.”
Haari, nodding in agreement, added, “Seriously, this is amazing. I think you’ve found a way to make this competition truly special.”
Ashi blushed slightly, looking around at her friends. “Thank you. I’m glad you all like it. It means a lot to me that you’re here to share this moment.”
Oki, enjoying her own plate, chimed in, “It’s not just the food. It’s the company and the support that make this so special. I’m really glad we could all come together like this.”
Ashi served everyone, and the conversation quickly turned light-hearted. “So, what have you two been up to lately?” she asked, looking at Rafta and Oki.
Rafta leaned back in his chair, grinning. “Not much, just the usual work stuff. Though, I did get a chance to visit that new sushi place downtown. Have you heard of it?”
“I’ve heard of it!” Oki exclaimed. “I’ve been meaning to try it out. How was it?”
“It was fantastic,” Rafta said. “You should definitely check it out when you get a chance.”
Oki, who was busy savoring her own plate, added, “I have to agree. This is delicious, Ashi. Your grandma’s recipe is definitely a winner.”
The group continued to enjoy their meal, laughing and teasing each other. The tension from the competition seemed to melt away as they shared stories and jokes.
Haari looked over at Ashi, a playful glint in his eye. “You know, Nicawa-san, you should consider doing this more often. You have a real talent for bringing people together with your cooking.”
Ashi laughed, shaking her head. “Well, I might just take you up on that. It’s been really nice to share this with you all.”
Rafta raised his glass in a toast. “To friendship and good food!”
Everyone clinked their glasses together, smiling and enjoying the moment. The room was filled with warmth and camaraderie, and Ashi felt a deep sense of fulfillment.
As they finished their meal, Oki helped clear the table. “Thanks again, Ashi. This was wonderful. I’m really glad we could be here to support you.”
Ashi smiled, feeling a rush of gratitude. “Thank you all. I couldn’t have done it without your help and encouragement. It means a lot to me.”
Oki looked at Ashi with a sincere expression. “We’re just happy to be here for you. And remember, no matter what happens in the competition, you’ve already made a huge impact.”
Ashi’s eyes softened. “I appreciate that. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m glad I could share it with you.”
As the evening drew to a close, the group exchanged warm goodbyes. Ashi felt a renewed sense of hope and excitement for the upcoming competition. The support and companionship she had received were invaluable, and she knew that, no matter the outcome, she had already gained something priceless: the bond of friendship.
