Chapter 74

"Yes," Noelle answered curtly.

"So, what right do you have to criticize me, Noelle? Didn't you also resort to underhanded tactics to be with Hendrix?"

Noelle's eyes turned solemn at Maxwell's accusations.

When she wanted to say something, Maxwell continued, "you're already over him, why did you choose to get into this car? Why didn't you go to the hospital instead? Wasn't this... your plan?

"Noelle, what happened last night... I was wrong. You said that you can't handle my affection, but fundamentally, we're no different from each other.

"You chose to get into his car last night because you were sure that he wouldn't ignore you. Am I right?"

It was midday, and the strong sunshine shone upon them. Their skins were burning, but all Noelle felt was a chill all over her body. Even her balled fist was slowly loosening

Staring at her pasty face, Maxwell reckoned that he had hit the nail on the head, and his smirk deepened. However, the look in his eyes turned sinister at the same time the edges of his lips curled upward. "Does Hendrix know?" he asked.

Noelle jerked her head up, and Maxwell whipped out his cell phone, which was in the midst of a c call.

"That you made use of him and set him up like this," Maxwell finished and ended the call, looking Noelle in the

eyes.

Biting her lip, Noelle stared back at him, and after holding his gaze for a while, she finally said, "Are you done saying what you want to say?"

When he didn't reply, she took it as an affirmation and turned around to leave after giving him a nod.

Maxwell's voice echoed from behind her, "Noelle, you, too, no longer have the chance... to be with the one your

His statement made Noelle freeze in her steps for a second, but she didn't turn around. As though she heard nothing, she continued walking forward.

Soon, she returned home. Before she could open her door, her opposite neighbor suddenly yelled, "Hey!"

At first, Noelle didn't think that she was calling her. After a, she had been living here for a while and had never introduced herself to her neighbor. Hence, she didn't look back and opened her door, ready to get in.

The woman behind her was mad. "Hey, I'm speaking to you! Are you pretending to be deaf?" She

scoffed, slamming her palm on Noelle's door to stop her from shutting the door.

Alas, Noelle realized that she was speaking to her. "What's the matter?" she asked coldly.

The woman with long, wavy, bleached blonde hair gave her a once-over. "A Maserati was parked downstairs earlier. Is that your friend?"

"Do you have a problem?" Noelle asked instead.

"No. I just think... We're neighbors, so I'd like to be friends with you."

The woman beamed at Noelle, who wasn't interested in making friends with her. After telling her that the Maserati car owner wasn't her friend, Noelle closed the door.

She could hear the woman shouting from outside, but she ignored it and tossed her leftover prescription on the table.

Suddenly, she recalled the call Maxwell made earlier. Although she had no idea about Hendrix's reaction on the other end of the line, she knew that what Maxwell said at the end was true.
