1: Your Average Action Movie

The room is sparsely furnished with a single metal table and two chairs. A bare bulb flickers overhead, casting eerie shadows on the walls. Two men sit facing each other. One man is maintaining a steely glare at the other, who, at this point in time, is cuffed to his chair. The cuffed man's eyes twitch; the edge of his eyelids is beginning to feel a ferocious itch. He shakes the cuffs back and forth while blinking rapidly to relieve said itch.

"Pipe down."

That is Jack, the man sitting on the opposite chair; the un-cuffed man, if you can imagine. His glare never breaks throughout the whole ordeal. A seasoned agent with a signature poker face and unkempt hair, Jack holds quite the reputation. Under his leather coat—its color long faded to the agonizing summer sun—hides a bulletproof vest, a testament to the danger he faces daily. Perhaps, because of this very reason, Jack does not consider hygiene a priority. After all, who cares if a dead man's hair has a whole ecological system on it?

"Atchoo!"

And the gentleman who just sneezed, and is cuffed, is Vincent.

Appearances can be deceiving. However, Vincent is a bit of a fashion connoisseur. An average on-the-loose criminal mastermind known for his cunning intellect and ruthless tactics, Vincent always ensures he looks fabulous while enjoying an afternoon leisurely activity of robbing the city's national museum. The back is cuffed, but not the front.

“So now that we have gotten comfortable..." Jack straightens. "Would you mind telling me where is-”

"Oop, wait, tut tut," Vincent cuts in, "don't ya think the light is a bit too bright?"

"What?"

"I can feel the power of five billion megavolts scorching my skin, Jackaboy," Vincent continues. "It's hot!"

"Seriously?" Jack sighs. "And quit with the nickname."

"No, no, this is actually a rather dreadful dilemma! Can you see my sweats staining my latest techbroid waistcoat?" He leans back and puts his feet on the table. "Oh, how God has abandoned me... "

"We've been through this, Vincent. In this room, I ask... " Jack points a thumb to his chest, and his index finger to Vincent, "... and you answer."

"Y'know, the light kinda reminds me of my theater days," says Vincent, staring at the buzzing bulb overhead, "I used to dream of becoming an actor, like being at the center of the stage, spotlight shining on me and everything, y'know?

"I hardly see how this-"

"And I worked hard on it, too, every day at the club after school. 3 to 9. Never returning home before all my lines are up here." He points to his temple, with his foot.

"Oh yeah? And how'd that work out for you?" Jack slaps Vincent's feet off the table.

Vincent smiles and shrugs. "Well, destiny set me on a different path."

"Uh-huh."

"Still, how often do you get showered in spotlights like these? Spotlight that makes you feel like the main character?" The theater kid/criminal mastermind asks.

"Don't know. How often do you?"

"All the time. Police helicopter light, moonlight, patrol light, drone light, laser tracker light, y'know, et cetera and et cetera." Vincent counts with the fingers cuffed behind him.

"Enough. Where is it, Vincent?" Jack stands up abruptly, glaring into Vincent's eyes. When Jack sat down earlier, he could not see Vincent's eyes very well, but now that he can, there is something curious about them. Vincent's eyes carry a rare hue of hazel—a quality that would send women looking his way whether they are high-class nobles or mere prostitutes. Only a scant few who possess hazel eyes are recorded in history texts, and the number recorded usually never reaches two digits. It is not an inherited trait, either, as far as historians are concerned.

“Okay, calm down, Jackass, no offense."

"Offense taken."

"You'll have to be more specific. I have a lot of... ‘its’, ” Vincent smirks.

“The microchip. The one you stole from the government facility last week. We know you have it,” Jack leans forward—his face inches from Vincent's.

Vincent's smirk slowly fades. He droops his eyes low and shapes his mouth into a half-smile, offering Jack the sharp and calculating expression of a mastermind.

“And why would I give up such valuable merchandise?” Vincent smiles calmly.

“Because you know what happens if you don't. We both do,” Jack leans back.

A deafening silence hangs in the air.

"Jack, you've never caught me before. What makes you think you can now?" Vincent holds up both his hands, un-cuffed. The cuffs hang lifelessly on the chair's arm, then plop to the floor with a resounding clink.

"Whoa-"

But before Jack can reach for his sidearm, a team of armed assailants storms into the room, weapons-drawn.

“Freeze! Hands where I can see them!” One assailant barks.

"Eagle to Nest. We got 'em cornered! Deploying backups in 10 seconds. Over," another assailant shouts into his radio.

"Y' know these guys?" Vincent yawns and stretches his back.

"I thought they're yours, asshole," Jack slowly raises his arms.

" 'Kay. I'll go front. You handle my back," Vincent whispers.

"What? Hell no!"

"Ya got a better idea?" Vincent glances at the attackers' rifles, then back to Jack.

Jack gulps, trying to swallow the idea down his throat and think of a better one, but he chokes as it gets stuck somewhere between the better-idea system and the logical-decision region.

"Okay. Fine, alright," Jack reluctantly gives in. "Goddamnit, how the hell did this happen twice?"

"Well, we cooperated so well last time that fate decided to test us again," Vincent answers. "Plain and simple."

"Ay! Shut up and get down!" The armed assailant sticks his nozzle to Vincent's forehead.

Vincent glances over to Jack, who glances back. He gestures to Jack to go back and let him, of course, take the front. Jack nods and springs into action.

In the chaos that ensues, they knock out the attackers with the available metal chairs and use the distraction to their advantage. As they fight and steel-chair their way out of the interrogation room, Jack and Vincent find themselves reluctantly working together, complementing each other's skills in unexpected ways.

"For the record, you're still arrested, Vincent."

"Don't you know, Jack? Half the fun's the chase."

Outside, the night is alive with the sound of sirens and gunfire as they race through the streets in a stolen Aston Martin, pursued both by the unknown assailants and Vincent's henchmen, coming to rescue their boss.

But amidst the chaos, a bond deepens between them—a companionship born out of mutual respect. But Vincent will never admit it, and neither will Jack.

In a climactic showdown atop a towering skyscraper, Jack and Vincent confront each other once more. Their fates are intertwined in a deadly game of cat and mouse, and as the sun rises on a new day, only one man will emerge victorious. However, both men will forever be changed by their face-to-face encounter.

The rest is history.
