Chapter 4 : Liminal space

Chapter 4 : Liminal space

Having finally arrived at one of the many tables in the library, one sat snugly into a corner so as to be hidden from passersby, Nick plops the book down on the table with a soft thudding noise before taking a seat himself.

‘So what makes you so special, mister liminal space?’ Nick thinks to himself, as he once more turns the book around in his hands. Trying to confirm he hadn’t missed anything earlier, he notes no differences between the first and second look.

‘I guess I should start at the beginning, and go from there. I see no other way to get this to work right now at least. Hopefully it explains some of all of this’ At this, Nick finally opens up Liminal spaces in mundane reality and finds immediately that any mention of a publisher, other works by the author or really anything you’d expect to see in the first three to five pages of a book is missing. Leaving just pages adorned with ornamental borders and nothing else.

‘A bit weird, but certainly not something supernatural…’ Nick thinks as he flips to the first page with any text on it. Page 6 with the header [Foreword : Liminal space and you] and the information provided below makes up just more than half the page

‘The blank pages? Should I check them again? This really isn’t getting much clearer but could this have to do with those places ether converges that the announcer spoke of?’ Reading onward for answers, Nick reads the rest of the lines.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

‘That was certainly more informative than the first part. Is there more on the next page? I don’t see why they’d cut it off at this.’ Checking the next page reveals it to be blank, as does checking any of the next pages right to the back cover of the book.

‘Why is this even in the library? Is this a first draft?’ Deciding to check every page once more just to be sure Nick immediately stumbles on the first page, seeing that inside the adorned borders now resides a full page describing what is apparently step one to entering the liminal space

‘Alright, before I do any of these steps I really think I should be at home. Or at least not in a public space, god knows if this even does anything in the first place but I don't want to risk it. I should check this book out, but I somehow doubt this book, which looks to be describing the way reality itself is changing, will be easy to check out. Or atleast will have something interesting happen such as it not being registered in their system’

Heading towards the front desk again, passing by the many shelves of books, Nick quickly spots Maxwell Reddings who looks to be nearly done helping a group of pre-teens each holding their own armful of books. Getting in line behind them, it’s not long before Nick gets to the front.

‘’Hello again mister Red, i’d like to check this book out please’’ Nick starts, hoping this goes smoothly. Seeing that Nick looks nervous for some reason Maxwell Reddings replies assuringly ‘’Absolutely, could you pass it to me alongside your membership card from earlier? It should take just a moment and then you’ll be ready to go.’’

Passing the book over, Nick does a double take as the book changes into one about geometry the moment it’s out of his hands and securely in Maxwells. Maxwell seemingly notices none of this, and continues to check the book out for Nick as if nothing unusual is happening

Accepting the book from Maxwell and thanking him for the help, Nick starts to head back to his car. ‘Can only I see the true book? Is that what this is?’ Being lost in contemplation Nick barely notices as he gets to his car, having gotten lost in his own thoughts on the walk back

‘Eyes on the road Nick. This is not the time for distractions, I should get back home first.’ Nick turns the key and starts his car, then after checking for incoming traffic heads back home to hopefully get to the bottom of this soon.
