Chapter 3 : The literary anomaly

Having gotten stuck in traffic about halfway through the trip towards the library Nick takes the time to actually think about what has happened within less than 3 hours of having woken up.

‘Who was that man? That announcer fellow? Why did he take the time to speak with me and what the fuck is happening with my mind that i actually believe any of this?’ Taking a moment to drive forward in traffic before continuing, Nick takes a deep breath.

‘Obviously he was speaking some fragment of the truth, that or I became deranged overnight since i really did see that information block in my mind. Hell, I can still feel it in the back of my mind as if at my beck and call if only I were to call on it. So what does that mean exactly? I’m now some kind of wizard, no, a sorcerer?

Seeing traffic start to move properly again, Nick decides to pay attention to the road again and leave it till he gets to the library. ‘Let's hope the library has some answers and not just dusty outdated books because the city has been slowly lowering the library's budget for years now, at least according to my friend who used to work there part-time in college’

The car door makes a thunking sound as Nick closes it, having finally found a place to park his car without having to walk half a kilometre to the library. ‘Now to try and find what’s so interesting about this place’ Nick thinks to himself as he makes his way towards the large double doors that make the entrance to the library.

Getting close enough to see the details on the large doors, Nick begins to feel some sort of pressure in his head. One that feels like it’s coming from inside the library. ‘What the hell? Is this what he wanted me to investigate, just some advanced form of headache, my developing [Ether sense] or some combination of the three?’

Deciding not to dawdle, he finally makes his way inside with the pressure becoming stronger while not more painful as he gets closer. Spotting the librarian, who is a young looking man with long, grey hair that goes down to the middle of his back wearing a pair of round, red glasses with a green jumper and blue jeans with no particular pattern, he first decides to ask some things before he starts to wander around on his own.

‘’Hello mister…’’ looking for a nametag and failing to find one, the librarian fills it in for him

‘’The name’s Maxwell Reddings, but most people call me mister Red or for the little ones it’s mister Librarian’’

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

‘’Thank you, I didn’t mean to be rude, mister Red. The name’s Nicholas by the way. I was just wondering how one would go about lending books from this library? Or if there are spaces to read the books inside the library, and to that effect i’d also like to inquire as to when this place is open’’

‘’Well we’re open every day of the week bar holidays that we announce a few weeks beforehand to anyone that has a membership. We also put up a notice on that board over there’’ Maxwell then points towards a board you passed on the way in that is filled to the brim with notices, posters and announcements for different clubs, gatherings and otherwise in the city. ‘’As you can see, for the moment we’ll be open from 10 o'clock in the morning till 10 o’clock in the evening’’

‘’I’ll be sure to give it a look if I find myself not getting a membership. Speaking of that though, about lending books from the library?’’

‘’Yes, well, that is rather simple. You can grab a book from the shelves and read them at any of the reading spaces we have around here, there’s plenty of empty spaces to sit at’’ Maxwell once again points at several places, as Nick notes that there really aren’t many people inside of the library

‘’As for lending books, you’ll need a membership for that. Then you can lend up to three books at a time, for a month long. Barring requested extensions, which could make that up to two months. A membership is only about 6 euros per month, before you ask.’’

‘’That… actually is everything I wanted to ask, thank you. Can we set up a membership right now? Incase i find anything i’d like to lend after i have a look around.’’

‘’No problem, we can get that squared away in just a few minutes. Just tell me your Date of birth, your full name and…’’

—------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Having gotten the membership out of the way, Nick finally gets to have a look around the library and decides to first investigate where the pressure inside his head could be coming from.

Taking note that it got stronger when he got closer to the library proper, he decides to head where the pressure is strongest. ‘This library is huge, i’ve been walking for a good five minutes and there’s still no end in sight. Plus the pressure is still getting stronge-, wait a second it’s getting weaker all of a sudden!’

Stopping in place and taking two steps back Nick notices it gets stronger again ‘It must be somewhere nearby then. Maybe the source is even on one of the shelves? I think it's coming from… Here!’ Nick reaches out instinctively to where the feeling is coming from and ends up picking a book off the shelf he was stood next to

‘And what makes you cause me such a headache? Let’s have a look.’ Turning the book around in his hands, Nick notices nothing out of the ordinary at first glance. The book has a red cover with a silver trim and one of those lace bookmarks of the same shade of silver. The title of the book being Liminal spaces in mundane reality and the author being Imra Velum

‘I should probably find a place to read this, partly so I don't faint due to this pressu-’ Before Nick can finish that thought, the pressure seems to get sucked into the book ‘The hell? I really need to get this book read, it keeps getting more and more confusing. And I swear I've heard that name before but I can't remember seeing it anywhere.’
