Chapter 4 Interlude Isabell Pena

Chapter 4 Interlude Isabell Pena

Isabell is in the middle of taking a test in college when the world goes through an apocalypse. Everything shakes and changes. Mist is everywhere. Everyone around her starts yelling, screaming and panicking.

“ The sky is Red!?!”

“What is with the Mist everywhere?!”

“I need to get out of here, and find family!!”

“Aaaaaahhhhhhhh…Helpe me please help…me, arrrggghhh”

The screams and yells lose coherence and get tangled up. Isabell decides to in her own words: “ I need to get the fuck out of this mad house and get some place safe”.

She flees the classroom and tries to survive the monsters. They look like…things, strange blobs that make no sense. The monsters are everywhere. Isabell's heart starts beating fast as her face contorts in confusion, but before she can do something, one of the students disappears with a pop. The monsters are green and seem to be made of Mist.

Isabell stares at the other students nearby the blob, not knowing where to turn to find help. There is no sign or sound that suggests where the student went. Her mind spins with what could be happening and panic begins rising in her chest."Did you see that?" she whispers to one girl.

Isabell doesn't hear the reply and is too focused on watching the blob, trying to figure out where it had gone. The blob reappears, closer to the classroom than before, and slowly comes towards her. She tries to back up and is unable to move her feet, so she just stands there waiting for the thing to reach her."What the fuck…""Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!" A girl near Isabells panics as she sees what the blob was before, and starts sprinting away as if she’s the victim instead of Isabel's friend.

"What the hell!" she yells in frustration reaching her hand out. Deciding to ‘get the fuck away from doge’ she turns to run as well, though she's stopped by someone grabbing her arm.

"No running. It'll only get you if you don't fight and stand your ground." Isabell turns to stare at the owner of the hand holding her arm and sees a man who seems vaguely familiar. His eyes are green and they don't seem malicious, but she's still wary. She spots a small scar over his left eyebrow, and looks over the black jeans with a dark green sweater he is clothed in. They somehow suit him. She thinks.

“ The fuck am I thinking, I am about to die and I stop and examine his clothes?!?!!”

The man smiles at her reassuringly. "You need to stay calm, okay?" she nods, though she's starting to freak out again.

"Okay. I'm going to let go of your arm now, alright?" He does as said.

He releases her arm then looks down and picks something off the floor, "You dropped this." "Thanks," she mutters to him, taking the item from him and seeing that it's a pen.

"How did you know I was carrying one?"

"It wasn't hard to tell with the way your hands were shaking. Like your hands lost something that they can play with, fidget with. You don't seem very confident," the stranger replies with a smirk. His voice sounds almost soothing to her ears, which she finds slightly unsettling considering their conversation was interrupted by the blob chasing after another student.

The stranger points behind him, "There might be more things. We've gotta stay here and feel confident, ok?" She nods in understanding, "Good." She's grateful for his help but wonders who he is and where he got his knowledge from. “Who are you?”

“I’m just someone trying to survive this apocalypse the same as you.” He replies with a slight smile. She follows up with a “Ok.” and continues on with her questioning.

Now feeling slightly curious she asks “ How do you know that the blobs chase the unconfident, the runners?”

With a wry smile filled with hidden pain, sorrow, and frustration he answers with “First hand experience… it’s not pleasant, and those taken will live a life worse than the sweet release of death. They will be safe for a while but they won't gain the experience to grow stronger.”

With that phrase he turns and gestures to the hallway and motions forward, “After you, it's obviously empty and the sooner we get out of this charnel house the better.”

With a great many questions on her tongue and her heart hammering from the sudden rush of adrenaline she asks about the how, “ How do you have that knowledge, why do you know so much about all this?”

While following Isabell down the hallway and stepping down the stairs he responds, “Ha..Ha.. Ha.. It’s not time. Not yet. I'm sorry that I can’t tell you anything. You just need to know that I can help, and I will. I can’t promise to keep you safe but I will try.” is what he says and goes quiet.

What a desolate laugh, the first thought to pop up in her head as she tries to make sense of that statement.

With an ironclad silence surrounding them the two make it to the ground floor and observe the outside.

A few seconds later he responds with, “ It’s clear, let's get the hell away from here.”

She agrees and followers him out. They slowly slink to the right avoiding the main thoroughfare. After a few hundred feet he signals to the right and Isabell follows. Into the building they go and a few minutes climbing up to the second floor later a sigh erupts from him.

“How are you holding up? ” he questions while pointing to the left toward an unlocked door.

As they head in, Isabell thinks upon the question and sighs. She answers back, “Well lets see, I've been hunted by blob monsters, an apocalypse happened, I'm following a stranger and I watched my friend get disappeared by the very same blob. How do you think I am holding up?”

He chuckles and says, “ The sarcasm is strong with you. If you can say that you'll be fine.”

They see a few chairs, a bed and a few more doors in this room. Sitting in a chair as she does the same and they talk, “ This place should be safe till things slowly start to cool down a bit. We can use this as a base and then in the future we can leave.” he starts off.

Agreeing that they needed a place to stay and keep safe she nods. He smiles at that and she asks an important question in her mind, “ What is your name? I followed you here and I still don’t know it.”

He booms out an incredulous laugh and replies with, “ Well my name is Regis. Regis Baudric”

She deadpans and says, “ Kingly, heroic monarch, that's the meaning of your name? Man, you have some ambitious parents.” He laughs and replies with, “ Well…yeah, they are amazing. Two of the smartest, kindest and strongest people to have existed.” He says with a happy nostalgic smile.

“Okay…enough about that. It’s getting dark and we need to sleep. I will take the bed and there should be another somewhere here so let’s get napping.” Isabell proclaims as the adrenaline wanes and the fatigue slams into her. Regis chuckles, stands and heads to another door waving goodbye.

She slowly falls asleep as though of the day and what happened slowly filters into her dreams.

Regis looks back through the crack in the door, tears and melancholy in his eyes. A dark shadow passes through them as he whispers as if to comfort himself. “You were in the safe zone last time. When you came back you helped so many people. You helped me and it's my turn. There you can learn but here you can grow.” With a glance back for an instant he closes the door and heads to rest.
