The circle was complete, and the Alpha growled at me, as if taunting me to attack it. The Alpha was several pounds larger than me, and much bigger. I might come up to an average human’s knee, but the Alpha would come up to the waist.
I was practically doomed from the start. I knew I could get away though, so I decided to at least try it out. I slashed at the Alpha when it got close. The Alpha jumped to the side as I slashed it. My claws missed by over an inch.
Damn! This thing is quick!
The battle continued fiercely. I was on the receiving end of a beat-down. I couldn’t land any decisive hits on the Alpha, but my human intellect at least kept me from being pulled in by his petty tricks. My Light Claw did occasionally make a small bit of damage.
Thanks to the experiments on using the rat, I at least understood my approximate mana capacity. I couldn’t accurately gauge it, but I could feel when I was getting close to the limit. I didn’t feel that way even after four of the strikes.
The problem was that I was the only one taking any real damage at this point. I had to think of some way to beat the Alpha. I didn’t have enough experience in fighting, even in the real world, to actually put up more than a token resistance.
The only thing I had going for me was the ability to use bodies as I wished, at least if they were within the rank system. That part confused me still. I had no way of knowing what rank these wolves were, but the rat ranked up after evolving twice. The same might be true of other species.
I didn’t know if the Alpha wolf was a higher rank, but I decided to try something. It was either that or die. As I shifted my body into the Alpha, it stopped for a moment.
You have failed to possess the creature: Alpha Dark Wolf.
Possessing more powerful or sentient creatures is only possible if they are weakened, or are weaker than the monster you currently possess.
Alpha Dark Wolf is a rank 3 creature. You have little to no chance to possess ranks higher than 2.
! I had thought that would work. The regular dark wolf took the lull in movement, and pounced on the Alpha. It dug its claws in deeply. The moment the Alpha came to, it bit into the neck of the other wolf. Blood spurted from the wound.
I tried possessing the Alpha again, and it faltered again. This time for less time than the first one. Can animals become immune to possession?
Since my attack failed I went back into the other wolf. The other wolf quickly accepted me. I wanted to help this wolf somehow, but all I could do was stall the other wolf for shorter and shorter intervals. My stalling did pay off though.
The Alpha had a nice cut across one of its eyes. Blood dripped down, hopefully making it harder to see. The wolf attacked the Alpha again, and actually managed to land a hit. The wound was deeper than the first one.
The Alpha seemed to be weakening slowly. With only one usable eye, it wasn’t able to dodge as well. After that, the battle started turning in our favor a bit more. The wolf went for the Alpha’s legs, biting hard enough to crush bones.
The Alpha jumped to the side, but still received damage. Its right foreleg was limping. It obviously couldn’t put much pressure on it anymore. That was good for wolf at least. My question was, why wasn’t the Alpha using Light Claws like Wolf?
It had received more damage, proportionally and actually, then Silver. It should have done something.
As if answering my thoughts, the Alpha whined. An ear piercing cry flew from its mouth. More wolves started gathering. At first they looked to be about to jump into the fray, but they did not attack. Instead the merely watched as the Alpha was attacked repeatedly by Wolf. I was worrying over nothing.
The Alpha realized it was in danger. It didn’t receive the help it obviously expected. It jumped at Wolf, and bit down on his neck. Wolf batted the Alpha’s head, but the Alpha refused to let go. The Alpha was losing a lot of blood, but Wolf was taking a lot of damage as well.
Seeing them both get battered, I decided to try to take over the Alpha’s body, and make him release Wolf. If I could do that, then Wolf would have no trouble beating the Alpha. I pushed my was through Wolf, and into the Alpha that was tightly clenched on his neck.
You have successfully possessed the rank 3 creature: Alpha Dark Wolf.

For possessing a rank 3 creature, you will find it much easier to possess any rank 2 creature. Possessing rank 3 creatures is now slightly easier. Possessing a creature lower than rank 2 will not take any noticeable effort.
The Alpha stopped in its tracks. All I had to do was wait, I baited Wolf into the perfect position, then let the Alpha get hit by a critical attack before moving back to Wolf’s body. Taking complete control of Wolf was a relatively easy tack.
I felt like I had at least a couple of the Light Claws moves left. I decided to use one of them, just as Wolf bit into one of the Alpha’s shoulders. Wolf’s claws spread a large white claw attack against the Alpha’s left flank. The wound was deep thanks to the close proximity, and the amount of extra force Wolf himself added to the claw attack.
The Alpha had already lost a lot of blood, it also had accumulated several wounds during the battle. When Wolf noticed the Alpha getting weaker, he took the opportunity. He pushed all of his power into his back legs, and pounced on the Alpha.
As Wolf landed on the Alpha, I used the Light Claw attack on its only working front leg. Thinking about it, I realized I had been the one using the Light Claw, not Wolf. I didn’t have time to think of what that meant though. The Alpha was on its last leg so to speak.
The Alpha laid down, it knew its end was near. Wolf slashed the Alpha’s neck violently. I used about half of my remaining energy to use the Light Claw one last time. The claw dug through the Alpha’s neck, and severed it. The head rolled on the ground. I made Wolf look around. I was sure the others were going to attack now.
What I saw surprised me. All around the other wolves were bowing their front legs. As if in tribute to Wolf. They placed their heads on the ground. It was as if they were accepting him as an emperor or something.
Then a familiar tingle started. It was the same as when the Silver evolved. I braced myself for the pain, but it didn’t help. Wolf howled in pain. The other wolves joined his voice to make a chorus of howls. Then Wolf’s muscles started to spasm.
The process with Silver repeated itself with Wolf. But this time a much better outcome appeared. Instead of a rank 2 monster, which Wolf already was, what I got was:
You have successfully possessed the rank 3 creature: Alpha Dark Wolf.
The new Alpha was slightly smaller than the one we had just defeated. It almost came up to a human’s waist. It had the same body shape and markings as Wolf did before the evolution. Before I could think about anything else, I fell unconscious.
I was in a familiar castle. A familiar God was standing close to me. “Well you’ve done quite nicely in the month that you’ve been there. It was boring at first, but managing to kill an Alpha Dark Wolf? That’s something that would take at least an E rank adventurer.”
Obviously I had no clue what he was talking about. “What’s an E rank adventurer?”
God looked thoughtful for a moment. “Ah, yes you’re not from that world. I sometimes forget these things. Well they are a class of adventurers. It goes from F to A then from S, SS, SSS, and finally X. But that isn’t why I called you back here.”
“So why did you call me back?”
“I got bored. You are the first person I’ve talked to in a few hundred years after all.”
I stared at him.
“Well, actually there is a small problem with returning you… Your body was stolen during the summoning ceremony. It seems the mages that were summoning you weren’t happy to just get a disembodied mana entity.
Um… They killed your body after finding out it was brain dead. I could bring it back if it was in my world, but since it is in another universe, I can’t do anything.”
“What does that mean for me?” I asked, concerned. If my body was destroyed then would I die?
“You won’t die or anything, but you are stuck in the other universe for now. At least you can still possess other animals.”
He shrugged. “Sorry, but that’s all the time we have.”
Everything faded to white, and I woke up in a dark place. I felt like I had a body, probably the new Alpha, but I was depressed. If what God said was true, then I’d never be able to go back to the other universe. I may not have had anything going for me there, but it was still my home.
That’s when I decided. If I was going to be stuck in this new world, and I had the power to possess potentially powerful monsters, the I’d possess the most powerful monster there was!
