Chapter 4: Izparut, the God of Elements and Wisdom

“神啊,你为何将数以万顷的荒凉说成良田;

"O God, why do you call desolation stretching over thousands of acres fertile land;

你为何指着饿死的贱民诉说着世界的平等;

Why do you point at starving peasants and preach the equality of the world;

Why do you tread on the corpses of innocent women and children and praise the peace of the world?"

The god replied, "Because I am Izparut, the god of wisdom and elements."

Izparut was a legendary figure. It was rumored that he was once human but became so intelligent that the world entrusted him with the elements, hoping he would maintain order among living beings.

Izparut presided over living beings as the world wished, but as a god, a god tasked with maintaining order, this was far below his aspirations. He had greater ambitions.

Izparut wanted to become the master of the world. After millennia of research, he discovered that to dominate the world, he first needed hope, power, and wisdom.

It was said that in the Furnace Era, there were two gods: one called Thousand-Mile Eye, who could see all tiny and subtle things in the world, even glimpsing destiny and the future.

The other was called Swift-Ear, who could hear all the whispers of the world, even the thoughts within the hearts of gods.

As expected, both gods died. The god of fate, Sotis, would not allow such extraordinary beings to exist. The gods banded together to slay them and cast their corpses into the mortal realm.

The corpses of Thousand-Mile Eye and Swift-Ear became the nourishment of the heavens and earth, birthing a race that inherited some of their divine powers. They could hear conversations thousands of miles away and witness events unfolding from afar.

They were the Newsu clan, who lived by passing information. Their unique feature was their mismatched eyes: one black and one white.

The Newsu clan made a living by delivering information. Because of them, people could receive abundant news from outside even without leaving their homes, making it hard to be deceived.

Thanks to the Newsu, the lies of rulers crumbled effortlessly, and it seemed people were on the brink of witnessing the arrival of truth.

Kings and nobles would never want the ignorant masses to become rational or for information to flow freely.

Even the most benevolent king, Alexander III, opposed the enlightenment and awakening of the populace.

Because the first thing awakened people do is to rebel—fearlessly and unrelentingly.

The elites knelt before the statue of Izparut. Even though they were mutual political enemies who sought to destroy each other, nothing could break the apparent harmony they displayed at this moment.

In the face of the awakening and rebellion of the people, these elites appeared more like blood brothers or a loving couple who had spent their lives together.

Together, they knelt on the ground before Izparut, praying devoutly.

Izparut heard the devout call of his followers and descended to the mortal realm.

He descended upon the jeweled tower of the royal palace. At this moment, the high-ranking elites had completely cast aside their dignity. Even the king was not exempt. They kissed the ground where people tread, imagining it to be the feet of the god.

Seeing such devout followers, Izparut smiled with satisfaction.

"O mortals who worship me, why have you summoned me?"

The king raised his head pitifully and said, "O god of wisdom and elements, those lowly commoners wish to overthrow our rule. They want to shatter your statue and burn your temples. We cannot stop them! O god, save us!"

Hearing this, Izparut became furious!

"How could such vile creatures exist in this world?"

The king continued, "It is all because of that Newsu race. They recklessly spread truth and current events, turning the people into such ferocious and violent beings. My lord, you must punish these villains!"

After understanding the cause of the matter, Izparut summoned the Newsu race before him.

He said, "You have committed a grave sin. Are you aware of that?"

"What grave sin have we committed? We merely spoke the truth. Is speaking the truth also a crime?" one of them asked.

"Foolish creatures, it is because of the truths you spoke that so many ignorant people rebelled, causing the deaths of countless beings! As the representative of justice and goodness, I should sentence you to death."

The Newsu tribe was about to resist, intending to expose Izparut's hypocrisy and heartlessness, but with a wave of his hand, their voices were silenced. Even their sobs turned into soundless screams.

At this moment, Izparut, feigning benevolence, said, "Your ancestors were also gods of the divine realm. Out of my old friendship with them, I will spare your lives, provided you pledge allegiance to the rulers and nobles."

The rulers and nobles were full of lies, and nothing was more detestable to the Newsu race than deceit and falsehoods.

Some principled members of the Newsu tribe tried to resist. They raised their hands and used their bodies to express their defiance.

Seeing this, Izparut's eyes glinted with bloodlust. With a wave of his right hand, the heads of those who resisted fell, and their blood stained the ground red.

From then on, those members of the Newsu race who submitted to the ruling class donned blue robes with white collars or red robes with golden trim.

On the surface, they continued to serve the common people, but in their hearts, they were always thinking of the elites' safety.

At times, their reports even became tools for the rulers to fight for power.

As for those Newsu who refused to become lapdogs, though they had died,

The god of death, Milco, could not bear to see their complete annihilation. So, Milco transformed their souls into black-feathered ravens.

The ravens pecked out one another's white eyes.

From that day forward, under the cover of night,

One-eyed ravens recounted the world's ugly truths and filth, falling silent as the dawn sun rose.

Henceforth, the world rarely saw wars sparked by rebellion, replaced by murmurs of discontent and hushed complaints in the dark of night.

Because of this, Izparut gained recognition from the forces of power and wisdom. But he still lacked hope, and he knew he needed to possess it.

However, as a god—an allegedly great god—Izparut did not understand what hope was. So he asked wisdom,

"O Wisdom, tell me, what is hope?"

"To a starving beggar, hope is a bowl of porridge. To a noble king, it is an elixir of immortality. Hope, therefore, is elusive and unpredictable."

Since hope was so elusive, he temporarily set aside his quest to acquire it.

He continued to enlighten the gods as usual until one day, he learned that Luen had deciphered the Primordial Light—it was the very embodiment of hope!

In his quest to obtain the world's hope, he slaughtered all of Luen's followers, aiming to weaken Luen's strength.

Just as he planned to gather the gods to seize hope, Luen emerged to confront him.

Luen defended the hope of the world's beings at the cost of his own life.

Izparut suffered grievous wounds, and portions of his elemental and intellectual powers flowed into the mortal realm.

This power departed from him, attaching itself to Greck, the god of war, manifesting as a translucent lion circling around him.

Milco scattered half of the hope into the human world and carried the other half into the afterlife.

Thus, Izparut's dream of dominion was shattered like a fleeting illusion.
