The previous trials thus far had been doable without any losses. They’d had to fight their way through a pool of leeches and sharks, figure out a puzzle room before they were crushed to death, escape a basilisk five times the size of a train in a series of tunnels, and other varieties of bullshittery. Thankfully they’d each grown a level or two in the process, but it’d been a real struggle getting here.

“What’s the read on that guy’s info?” asked Trey as he motioned over to the battle angel machine in front of them.

Izumi checked the goggle’s read after focusing in on the construct. “Level 150. The small ones are all below 40. Atharost might want to go after the small guys while you and the front-liners take him out Trey.”

Trey nodded and Sithis grinned widely through ruby ethereal jaws. “Looks like we’ll be taking all the glory this round Atharost.”

Atharost rolled his eyes as his little fire elemental circled his arm. “We will see about that.”

Juila laughed eagerly and took to the front with the two minotaurs on either side - all of them stomping their hooves and roaring out challenges to the oncoming enemies. Meanwhile, Toady waddled over to a boulder to perch itself on top for a better view and angle of the battlefield.

“Here they come, get ready to light em up!” yelled Ashe as the small horde of metal insects rolled their way at tremendous speed.

“Firing!” screamed Izumi as she unhooked the latch holding down her cannon. Unfolding the weapon and bringing it over her left shoulder with an adjustable tripod unlatching to sit on the floor, she knelt down and let it rip.

The weapon was slow to reload, but it packed a punch. As it fired, the recoil visibly pushed Izumi back by a couple inches - if she hadn’t been kneeling down it would have completely knocked her over. The bullet tore through the sound barrier and anything in its path, devastating twelve of the incoming dwarven trilobites in an instantaneous shower of metal until it collided with the battle angel’s lower leg. The large construct was stunned momentarily, but it shrugged off the hit as if nothing happened and continued to walk slowly forward with swords out to either side.

“It didn’t even make a DENT in the HP!” exclaimed Izumi as she pulled out her pistol to fire at the smaller incoming foes. “That’s absolutely ridiculous!”

Trey and Atharost waited patiently by as the swarm closed in. Projectiles were being fired fast in their direction from the low-to-the-ground trilobites, but Atharost cast a wall of flames a few feet high and incinerated them all after the initial flurry. He then let out a blast of inferno with half of his mana pool that eradicated well over a third of the remaining swarm. To follow up, a wave of solidified and sharpened shadows rushed forward to skewer even more - leaving black shadow blades embedded in their suddenly motionless bodies.

“Oh what the FUCK Trey!” screamed Ashe from behind one of the stone slabs. “That was OUR xp! You’re already way ahead of us, Jesus!”

Trey laughed and held out his hands to either side. “My bad.”

“He just didn’t want me to outplay him.” snorted Atharost with his arms crossed.

Jason chuckled and nodded in agreement.

Izumi rolled her eyes and took a gulp of water from her canteen before placing it back on her hip to peer out over the barrier. She watched as the front line - which included Juila and the two minotaurs - entered the fray. The three tanks tore into the oncoming metal spheres, smashing, slashing and crushing as they went with ease. “Well, this is… relatively easy. Aside from the big one.”

She motioned over to the giant metal battle angle that had now stopped in the center of the room to stare out at them.

“He’s MINE!” sneered Atharost as he lunged forward into flight while blasting away with his elemental Boxamoth. Though immediately upon reaching his destination he was struck with one of the two massive blades carried by his enemy, and slammed face-first in a smouldering pile of stone on the near wall.

Jason facepalmed and Izumi lifted an eyebrow. They weren’t all that concerned for Atharost’s safety, considering Atharost could be reborn via his passive Life of Phoenix, but losing him before the boss fight would be seriously bad.

“It won’t be that easy after all,” thought Izumi aloud. “SHIT! INCOMING!”

Izumi and Jason quickly hid behind the barriers of stone as a whirl of electric spikes shot out of the mechanical angel’s chest to whiz past right where they had been a second earlier. Trey doubled down his concentration as he phased into shadowform and rematerialized - letting the spikes pass through him without any harm done - and not even having to move to avoid the incoming attacks. He was getting better at adapting his body as needed with his shadowform, and Sithis in particular had been very helpful in experimenting and testing the limits.

His shadow began to build and he outstretched one hand to send another attack of shadow blades out at his opponent - all of which were deflected by a built in barrier that the mechanical angel powered up on impact. Ashe was unloading clip after clip into the back of the machine, but the bolts bounced off the barrier as well. They had little to no effect as the brute simply ignored the woman and started walking forward again.

“This could be a problem…” stated Izumi as she let out another blast from her Gauss Cannon and used her goggles to read the status of the creature. The shot again stunned the monstrosity for just a moment, but it didn’t have much effect otherwise. “We’ve only got it down to 98% HP. This thing is a tank.”

From behind the machine, Atharost had finally dragged himself out of the debris and was firing firebolts one after another.

Again the innate barrier of the battle angel seemed to effortlessly deflect all of the attacks. Atharost grew frustrated after realizing this, and with another roar - he burst into intense flames and rushed into flight. This time, as the machine struck out at him, Atharost saw the attack coming and dodged to land one of his own against the side of the construct’s right leg with a wall of flames wrapping around it - and using the angel’s metal as a base from which to conjure the fire.

“97% HP,” yelled Izumi from cover as another flurry of electric spikes flew out of the angel.

Up until that point in time, the machine had moved quite slowly in its advance towards the front of the room. But without warning - it now lurched forward to quickly bear down on the ones in the front - bypassing the remaining mechanical trilobites with ease as it came. Izumi and Jason scrambled back as arrows and bullets were fired in their retreat, and a loud crash followed as the giant swung down onto Trey.

A large crack of energy erupted from the impact, and when the dust had settled it was seen that Talsh’Noc’Un had been brought forward to take the brunt of the impact. Trey grinned up at the much larger combattant through demonic jaws and he began to chuckle as rage and insanity took hold. He shadowstepped behind the brute - his signature move, letting the weight of his enemy bring it forward as he struck down hard with the greatsword and knocking his opponent to the floor. No sooner had he done this and the machine had picked itself up and lunged back at him, striking him back as he blocked the attack again - and sending him flying back across the 100 yard gap. Trey slammed against the now closed stone doors and ended up taking his HP down to 200/522.

In a matter of seconds the room was absolutely chaotic. Juila slammed her large maul into the angel’s side, but it took the brunt of the impact with little more than a lurch. Izumi threw out what bombs she had remaining in the pockets along her legs and explosions lit up the room. Jason was unleashing arrows and was frantically trying to shoot while running as fast as he could away from the enormous enemy. The few remaining dwarven trilobites were locked in combat with Toady and the two minotaurs: Cow-Daddy and Fat-Daddy, most of them being smashed to dust when getting too close. Meanwhile Reiklin from behind was sending out missiles as a torrent into the oncoming swarm, and Napoleon was giving support fire alongside Ashe and Izumi. The air was full of projectiles, magics, and the clashing of weapons was deafening.

Juila was seen flying through the air to slam into the near wall with a loud gasp as the air was knocked out of her lungs, she dropped the maul, and a large gash was present along her left thigh.

Ashe had just reloaded and started to fire another set of rounds into the angel from behind cover when the machine turned its attention to her. It jumped up and used its mechanical wings to propel it higher across the battlefield, but before reaching the blonde woman it was knocked off course with another blast from the ripper cannon.

Ashe gave a brief nod of appreciation to Izumi and made her way around to the next strange barrier a few yards away just as Cow-Daddy flung two trilobites over their heads with a roar, they sailed across the room to smash into the wall one after the other; exploding on impact in a shower of metal and wood.

The angel was still falling back to the floor when Trey’s blade found its mark. Activating the sword’s obliterate ability, he swung down hard in mid air and connected with the innate shield of the monster. Explosions of chaos magic shot out in all directions and for a brief moment the sword had been halted, but soon thereafter the shield cracked and the sword cut deep. Through the shield it went, and then into the thorax of the body where it left a deep gash of molten metal.

The battle angel hit the ground hard from the impact and even bounced once to come to a halt. Now enraged, Trey let out a bloodcurdling roar. He shot forward in a blur of shadow to connect again with the giant machine. The angel was sent flying forward into the far wall to shake the room just as Trey had done before - reversing the roles this time. Yet again Trey followed up with a third attack, but this time a large sword was brought down onto him just as he rematerialized from shadowform and it was his turn to be thrown to the ground.

Trey gasped as a large chunk of his body was torn out from his abdomen, and he doubled over in pain upon connecting with the ground.

Another cannon shot rang out and struck the angel alongside its face, this time obviously damaging it now that the shield was gone.

However, it was not enough. The machine took to the ground, and with a swift motion brought up its sword to finish off Trey. Ashe screamed for him to run, but Trey whisked away HP from Juila instead to bring his health bar back up in an instant - and he met the attack.

Rivia had also just finished casting a triple-stacked Rejuvenate miracle to recover even more as he reached up with both sets of claws to catch the incoming blade. Unfortunately her pestilence miracles simply didn’t work on mechanical creatures, so she was left to healing and completely lacked any offensive miracles for this particular fight.

A crater was left surrounding him as his laid back body crushed the floor under the weight and force of the attack. Trey grimaced as he felt the bones in his arms crack upon impact, but he was still a hell of a lot better than he’d been seconds before due to the quick healing he’d recieved.

Shadowstepping far above his opponent’s head - he threw the sword spear-like downwards into the metal body and continued to blast away at the angel with a multitude of chaos balls in a series of explosions. With an angry snarl, and as he began to fall back to the ground, two chains of chaos blasted out from his open palms and impaled the machine below with a jarring of metal.

Grabbing on to the summoned chains tight, Trey used the Chains to swing around and pull himself in - slamming into the heavily damaged construct with a ‘Terror Stricken’ sacred art.

Horror Crusader: Terror Stricken (Sacred Art) - Level 1

*Empower your next weapon strike with terror imbued dark magic. Upon

contact the target will lose all buffs, become terror stricken, and take an

resisted by a high willpower. Strike gains +200 Speed.

His sword was still embedded in the giant machine, but his summoned claws counted as the sacred art afflicted them with black and green flame. They ripped into the angel’s shoulder, tearing it off completely before the construct whirled around. He pushed off the mechanical creature, backflipping and rolling to the side to avoid follow up counterstrikes with one of its blades. Then he summoned even more of those pulsing black and crimson chaos chains from extra-dimensional routes to impale and hold his enemy in place.

It didn’t work. The chains ripped as the huge creature whirled around, causing a series of explosions as the mana infused bindings snapped like twigs to his utter shame and surprise. In an instant, Trey was sent soaring backwards and nearly coughed up a lung as the angel construct shot out some sort of javelin from a hidden compartment in its remaining arm through his thorax. The javelin violently ripped his intestines out his backside and remained lodged as he flipped, repeatedly crashing and bouncing off the floor until he smashed into one of the boulders scattered around the room.

Thankfully he landed right next to Jason though, and the alchemist unceremoniously ripped the javelin out without thinking twice before dumping three health potions directly onto the wound - one after another in a frantic blur of his hands. In combination with Rivia’s healing, Trey didn’t even need to take another bite out of Juila’s HP - and thank god for that, because she was getting low.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

In the siege on the Fost guild compound, she’d been able to heal up the wounds she gained by taking blood away from her enemies. Here though, the enemies didn’t have blood to take. Therefore her blood aura didn’t work, and she was comparatively handicapped - just like Rivia was due to the priestess’ inability to use pestilence miracles.

However, Rivia did have a new miracle up her sleeve - one that she hadn’t used yet… and that was about to change.

Kingdom Come (Tier 2 Alkir’s Miracle) - Level 1

* Call upon the powers of the dark to decimate and vaporize your enemy. This is a medium range, long cooldown, long casting time, extremely high damage homing ability.

The ground around Rivia’s feet was burning with green flames, and the flames were beginning to creep up her legs and body. The bathed her in ominous light and soon covered her face as she muttered the necessary prayer to Alkir. Even her halo began to burn a dark green soon after, and after having channelled the words of the prayer for some time - she felt the miracle burst to life.

She then uttered the final words.

“Kingdom Come.”

The black magic responded to her wishes. Her body shuddered and she tried to keep her focus steady as her consciousness went in and out. The miracle continued to rock through her until it released in a torrent of dark green energy.

It filled the entire room for a few moments and then responded to her call as it honed in on her target. The barrage of dark power coursed into the machine before him and steadily began to rip apart its body, throwing pieces of it about the room as the storm green power raged. On and on it went, tearing the giant machine asunder.

The sound was deafening, and even though it was her own miracle - she was having a hard time continuing to cast it purely based on the pain it was causing her ears. Metal twisted about and lurched as the battle-angel was ravaged. Very soon she had had enough, and let go of her hold on the miracle’s power.

The energy vanished, and she stood gasping to reclaim her breath and balance. The last of the trilobites were being stamped out by Juila, Toady, Reiklin, and the two minotaurs - and the room had scattered pieces of machine everywhere.

“WELL DONE!” exclaimed Xil’s voice from the beyond with an excited edge. “Take an hour to recuperate before the next phase of your games.”

The stone doors at the far end grated open once more, and revealed a passageway out into the darkness. Xil’s voice then vanished just as quickly it had come.

“These ‘games’ are getting harder as we go on,” noted Ashe as she made her way over to Atharost. The ifrit lay smouldering in the ground where he had been repeatedly smashed with a gigantic sword after trying to save Trey when his master had been impaled. His body was ruined, with multiple bruises and wounds scattered across his chest. His breathing was staggered and he was in a lot of pain, but he was somehow still alive.

Ashe took out a healing potion, knelt down beside the demon, and put it to his lips as the red fluid trickled into Atharost’s mouth. “We can’t have you dying on us now Atharost. Even if you’ll turn to ashes and come back, we still have the boss fight to get through.”

“I’m nearly out of arrows,” stated Jason bluntly as he put a hand on Trey’s shoulder - who was still recovering from having his intestines ripped out and rearranged before being healed again. “Going to go with the mace as soon as I’m out. These last couple fights used up most of them.”

Atharost began to shift, and soon the demon had risen from the hole in the ground to stand as his HP bar slowly refilled from the health potion Ashe had provided. Atharost then flew up into the air and cast an Inner Flame miracle, the area around him exploding with fire, and gave himself a much needed boost in the healing process.

‘Born Aflame: Inner Flame’ - a self-targeting miracle that calls upon Urskakak

Fireborn to instantly heal you to full health with a large area of effect fiery

explosion simultaneously.

He looked down in dismay at what remained of his fireproof boots and pants… They were torn pretty badly but at least they were still intact. “I’m going to have to request a new set… I just got these.”

“Definitely!” replied Izumi as she punched the demon’s shoulder once he’d landed again. Atharost’s flames had died down now and his pitch black skin stood out against the stone floor beneath. “We’ll get you to a tailor when we get out of this mess, don’t worry about it.”

Atharost smiled in acknowledgement and thanks.

“Well it looks like we each grew in levels, so that’s nice.” noted Jason as he flipped through his status page. “Think an hour will be enough to recover?”

Trey laughed, then coughed up a bit of blood before clearing his throat. “God only knows. Anyways, I need review these notifications from the battle to assign my stat and skill points… as well as go through the minion list. Lord knows I always slack assigning these points and there are a lot to be done. I think I’m more than a couple levels behind on assigning for everyone, so catch you in a bit.”

“You have gained 1 level in Blades. You have gained 1 level in Chains of Chaos. You have gained 1 level in the skill Shadow Blades. You have gained 1 level in the skill Shadowstep. You have gained 1 overall combat level. Your minion Atharost has gained 1 level in Fireblast, 1 level in Wall of Flames, and 1 overall combat level. Your minion Athrost’s familiar, Boxamoth, has gained 2 levels in Firebolt and 2 overall combat levels. Your minion Rivia has 1 level in Rejuvenation, 1 level in Staves, and 1 overall combat level. Your minion Napoleon has gained 1 level in Firebolt, 1 level in Hand to Hand Combat, and 1 overall combat level. Your minion Fat-Daddy has gained 2 levels in Axes, 1 level in Enrage, and 1 overall combat level. Your minion Cow-Daddy has gained 1 level in Blunt Weapons, 1 level in Enrage, 2 levels in Hand to Hand Combat, and 1 overall combat level. Your minion Toady has gained 1 level in Barbed Tongue, 3 levels in Acid Spray, and 1 overall combat level. Your minion Reiklin has gained 2 levels in Snipe Shot. Your minion Juila has gained 2 levels in blunt weapons and 1 overall combat level.”

When he took a look at his status page again, he facepalmed. He was 8 levels behind on assigning for himself, meaning 40 stat points and 8 skill points. He also had a lot of abilities to upgrade for his minions… Minion management was definitely on the backburner lately. He really needed to get his shit together, but he was always caught up doing other things… like just trying to survive. It also felt like he was growing levels so god damn fast that he couldn’t keep up with it because he was constantly needing to assign these damn things.

Oh well. He’d try harder from now on.

“You have assigned 40 stat points to your Strength stat, obtaining 20 Willpower points as well in the process due to your Horror Crusader ability. Control limit slots have been increased to 20, from now on the amount of Willpower it will take to obtain a new slot is again doubled to 20 Willpower per slot.”

Rough. 20 Willpower a slot meant four levels worth of points… but that’s only if he placed them directly. That wasn’t likely anymore, considering his new subclass granted him a free Willpower point for every 2 Strength, Vitality or Endurance points placed. Right now, he just needed to set his goal at wielding Talsh’Noc’Un at full potential…

Talsh’Noc’Un

Requirements: Minionize this weapon to wield it at bare minimum potential,

dealing 10% of normal damage without bonuses. Requires 710 Strength and 138

Wisdom to wield at full potential.

He was currently at 150 Strength and 57 Wisdom with an overall combat level of 43… so he had a long, long way to go.

Next he had 8 skill points to assign. His Chaos Ball was at level 29, Blades was at 19, and Shadowstep at 16. So he placed 1 point in Chaos ball to bring it to 30, 1 point in Blades to bring it to 20, and 6 points into Shadowstep to bring it to 22. All three abilities needed upgrades now, and he got to select how they formed new perks.

But this was only the beginning… as good and bad as that was. Good, because his minions had many skills to upgrade, but bad… because now he had to go through a goddamn list to fix it all before this upcoming trial. Was he stupid? Was he actually stupid.

He sighed, and went over the others as well. Napoleon had 25 stat points which he assigned to speed, and 5 skill points which he put straight into Curse of Burden and Hand to Hand Combat. Napoleon’s Firebolt had just hit 30, Curse of Burden was at level 10, and Hand to Hand Combat was now at level 22. All of them needed perk upgrades.

Rivia thankfully was up to date.

He assigned all of Juila’s 70 stat points directly into strength, and all her 14 skill points into blunt weapons. He figured she’d stick with the maul for a while, at least until he could get her something better. Even then - she had even told him that she preferred heavy and blunt weapons because she simply smashed things with them, as opposed to needing to learn how to handle it more skillfully like a blade or spear would require.

Atharost had hit level 54, being 6 levels behind on assigning points. 6 skill points and 30 stat points were just sitting there, waiting to be put into place. He put all of Atharost’s stat points into intelligence to increase his damage output with magic, and then put all 6 skill points into Firestorm - increasing its level to 11 for a needed perk upgrade. He also had just hit level 40 with Fireblast. Atharost had already assigned Boxamoth’s points into Wisdom for MP boosting, and the only skill the fire elemental had was firebolt. Boxamoth had just hit a total combat level of 10.

Piggy and Telipe were still in their respective nether realms, and he had no intentions of bringing out his non-combat or crafting related minions in a time like this. Same could be said for that thief, Grimy. He wasn’t any use here either.

Then there were the minotaurs. He assigned all their points into Vitality, increasing their HP because they were frontline tanks and putting their skill points into their primary weapon choices.

Reiklin was completely up to date, thankfully. So he didn’t have to do anything with that and gave the redheaded archer a thumbs up from across the room. Reiklin had done a damn good job of taking out those trilobites from afar with his empowered arrows, Trey just needed to make sure nothing got up close to his archer and Reiklin would continue to be fine.

Trey was satisfied with the adjustments. It was the first time he’d ever seen combination magic like this before, considering how Napoleon’s Firebolt had been altered in a way to make it both curse and fire attributes for the same spell. He began to wonder what combinations he’d be able to come up with for himself, if that ever did happen. The other upgrades were pretty damn good too, and he was glad to have gone over it before proceeding to the next trial.
