Chapter 77 - Juila (The end of book 2)

Chapter 77 - Juila

Juila, who was standing by passively to watch up until this point, raised her head abruptly as if startled. She stared Ashe down, then slowly her gaze drifted to Trey - and their eyes met.

Jason looked taken aback, but Ashe just ignored him and continued to prod Trey’s arm.

It wasn’t a bad idea, except Juila was a little bit useless in terms of fighting. Gorthomal had told him before his untimely death that thralls needed a master’s contract to keep on living after their souls had been shattered by the dark magic to create them, so turning Juila into a thrall and then releasing her as a test run was out of the question. If he made her a thrall, he’d have to keep her… or kill her. And he wasn’t about to kill her over something like that. He even liked Juila, so he’d be stuck with her if he chose to do this.

“Juila’s worthless in terms of fighting. Why would I choose her? You know the deal with thralls, I told you about it remember?”

Ashe’s snarky smile fell off her face immediately, while Juila continued to stare with that expression Trey couldn’t place.

However it was Izumi who came up with the answer. “Well… you could always use her like you are using Piggy. It would give you an opportunity to test out your ability and check the cooldown timer on your HUD too. It wouldn’t have to be cooking, you already have that. Jason has alchemy down and I have smithing... but we could get her on board with another crafting job. One that we don’t have already, hire someone to train her and there you go. Weren’t you talking to me the other day about having multiple minions with non-combat oriented classes geared towards crafting?”

Izumi never failed to surprise him.

“I love it.” Trey clapped his hands just once and beckoned to Juila - who looked like a deer in the headlights. “Get over here Juila.”

The slave sputtered something unintelligible, trying to get words to come out before she was cut off by Jason.

“You can’t do that.”

Trey raised an eyebrow, glancing Jason’s way as the tall blonde man confrontationally moved inbetween him and the slave girl. “Why not? What’s the big deal?”

“Because she’s going to be stuck with you permanently if you do that.” Jason spat to the side in disgust and jabbed a finger into Trey’s chest. “Cut the shit man.”

Ashe had had enough. She swat Jason’s hand away much to the surprise of everyone else and jabbed her own fingers into Jason. “No, YOU cut the shit! I’m so tired of you playing the goody two shoes here Jason! We all like you, but you have to come to terms with the reality we’re stuck in! I mean Jesus Christ, it’s not like Trey’s going to hurt her - and she’s already our slave so get the fuck over it! She’s just-”

“Just an NPC, I know I hear it from you all the time.” Jason flung her hand away but didn’t back down. “This is a real place! These people are real! What you’re doing is utterly wrong-”

“Where’s your proof? And even if it is, so the fuck what?” Ashe angrily narrowed her eyes and stood firm, fox ears laid flat against her head and the hair on her tail on end.

Oh god, not this again. Trey had already come to accept things for what they were, so he really didn’t like this debate these two always had.

Trey and Izumi exchanged looks and Izumi let off a well concealed giggle at how cute Ashe looked. Despite Ashe’s cute foxy appearance though, they both knew that she’d turned into a cold blooded killer in recent months. God help her old guild who’d left her to rot in the dungeon if she ever found them again, especially now that she had some serious speed and agility to back up her demeanor.

She was in it for the win, not to pussy-foot around.

The exchange lasted for another couple minutes with Karus, Napoleon and Atharost silent on the sidelines. Ashe and Jason traded a few insults with Izumi as moderator and Trey as the regularly insulted bystander, but in the end what caused the discussion to shut down was

Juila’s own interjection.

“I would love that.”

Everyone stopped talking and turned to stare Juila down. The amazonian fumbled with the straps of the pack she was carrying, before setting it down and stepping up to Trey with a determined look in her eye.

She took in a deep breath, let it out, and bowed her head submissively. “I have been used all my life. This is nothing new to me. However… I have also been weak, something to be protected, and unable to use my own power to further myself.”

She glanced over at Karus, motioning towards the man who’d once been a dwarf. “Look at him. Look at how much he’s changed… He is far more than he once was. I want that. I want to be strong too. I want to become something that is feared… I do not wish to stay weak like I am now. Please Trey…”

Juila’s gaze turned to him this time, lifting up her chin to meet his eyes. “I would do anything. I know you think I am useless, and that you wish me to be some sort of cook or scribe, or another crafting class like - like piggy. But I do not wish that, I wish to fight. I wish to grow strong. If I willingly give my soul over to you, may I ask this one thing? That you let me at least try to become something more than a sex slave? That you let me become something… greater?”

Trey hadn’t expected her to want to become a fighter of all things. He looked her up and down warily, and was going to reply before she cut him off again.

“Please…” She asked, kneeling before him and prostrating herself with her head to the floor. “Allow me to evolve like Karus did. It will take time, but I will serve you better than I ever could like this. I will be yours eternally, I care not if my soul is forfeit, just allow me to rid myself of the weakness this body has given me. The weakness that has seen me unable to defend the things dearest to me. Allow me to change, and I am unquestionably yours without contest.”

Trey really didn’t know what types of evolutions would come her way. He didn’t know if she even had a chance to become something that could ‘fight’ like she wanted to. However, he didn’t see the hurt in trying. At the very worst, she’d die… which would really suck - but he wasn’t overly invested in this particular slave anyways. He did like her, true, and she was certainly eye candy - but she was expendable.

So, without further ado, he nodded his agreement. “Sure. It’s a deal, but if it comes down to it and you can’t cut it as a fighter - you become a crafting class. Understand?”

The slave woman looked up to him with wide eyes, smiling slightly, and nodded before kissing the earth at his feet.

“TREY YOU DICKHEAD!” Jason almost went for the mace strapped at his belt but a warning glare from Atharost made him think better of it.

Trey just shook his head and was about to give Jason some flack of his own when he suddenly felt a surge of laughter come on. It was so quick and spontaneous that he had no idea what he was laughing about, but he began cackling loudly and it lasted for more than a couple seconds. His entire mind was encompassed in jolly thoughts and he really felt… Well, he felt happy!

By the time the laughing fit stopped and he regained his senses, Trey was seriously concerned. The reason? He really didn’t know what the actual fuck was funny! Yet here he was as jovial as a fuck llama.

God damn it he really hoped this insanity thing didn’t give him too much shit.

Jason and the others were staring at him now in silence. Even Rivia had joined the circle to stand at the perimeter and watch the events unfold.

“You know what?” Jason threw up his hands to either side helplessly. “I give up with you Trey. I’ve tried, but I think I may just have to call it quits when we get back to Teretog. With all of you.”

Jason gave Izumi and Ashe stares of their own. Izumi was a little hurt and taken aback, but Ashe could have cared less.

“I’m not going to have this on my conscience so I’m walking away. Have fun you narcissistic, self entitled, evil asshole.” Jason gave Trey the finger, turned around, and stalked back towards the statue.

Trey and the others watched him go, but none of them tried to stop him.

“Good riddance…” muttered Ashe as she leaned into Trey with an elbow on his shoulder. “Now I won’t have to hear him whine all the time.”

Izumi wasn’t so enthusiastic about it though. In fact she looked worried. “Uhm… I’m going to go talk to him and change his mind. I’ll be right back.”

Izumi hurriedly walked out of their cluster and headed in a straight line for the angry alchemist, picking up her stride when he saw her coming.

Trey frowned but was honestly more on Ashe’s side than Izumis’. He definitely liked Jason, but they fought a lot. Jason also made life a lot harder than it needed to be and was holding them back from progressing as fast as they could because of his moral beliefs. At least he had Ashe and Izumi. Who knew, maybe they’d find other Earthborn before the beta ended - or hell, even after the beta ended. He hoped Jason waited to leave until then. That way he and Jason could part ways with him knowing he’d done his best to see Jason off to a safe location with other people like them, as opposed to wandering around this blasted world all alone and trying to figure out where to set up his potions shop.

The NPCs here were real assholes a lot of the time and it really wasn’t a safe environment. Case and point: Gorthomal’s would-be betrayal.

“Master… may we proceed?”

Juila was still prostrated at his feet, staring at the ground in anticipation. “Please… rid me of this body, turn me into a thrall!”

Trey snorted. “Sure thing babe.”

Clamping his left hand around her face and concentrating on what he wanted the unholy script to do, he was pleased to see he didn’t have to wait long for a change. The living, moving tattoo along his left arm began to swirl about faster and hiss. Juila’s eyes rolled back, and she began to lurch and spasm, but it drastically went up whenever the tattoo began to soak into her flesh.

Little runes, unholy symbols and lines of power coursed over Trey’s left arm and into Juila. The woman began to gurgle, tears flooding across her face.

A noise of searing flesh met Trey’s ears as the runes faded away into Juila’s body, reappearing back on Trey’s arm moments later. The marks of where they’d been soon dissolved too, leaving nothing but that tanned skin the amazonian had an abundance of - and a familiar thrall pentagram carved into her forehead. Her large brown eyes came back to set into a normal gaze, then widened when the status message presented itself to both of them.

“Juila’s soul has been altered and dominated. Juila has been registered as your minion and thrall. Congratulations, for more information please visit her status page.”

Trey facepalmed upon seeing her page and whispered to himself. “Wow… What a letdown.”

He hadn’t expected too much, but Juila literally had nothing going for her other than the shape and musculature of her ass. She had no skills, no traits, no magical attributes… even her MP was a lot lower than most humans. 20/20? She must not have much magical affinity period, likely one of the multitude of NPCs who couldn’t wield magic at all.

How unfortunate.

Nevertheless he’d at least learned quick and easy about how this ability worked. It was fast, effective and took less than a minute to do. He was very pleased with it, and when he found the cooldown display on this ability in his HUD he wasn’t all too surprised.

“Ten days.” Trey muttered as he let go of Juila’s neck. “Ten days for the cooldown to recharge.”

The woman underneath him clasped her hands together, tearing up for a reason Trey couldn’t place and not caring enough to ask. Whatever it was, it didn’t have to do with him - because her opinion of him wasn't negative.

Ashe shrugged indifferently. “Not too bad! Don’t act so disappointed, it’s not like you’ll be using it all the time.”

Trey chuckled and turned to look his friend over, before whispering again. “It isn’t that… Juila is just very… Well, she’s worthless. Absolutely nothing going for her. Level 1 and not even a single skill. I was hoping for better I guess.”

Ashe tried to hide her amusement but failed and got a glare from Trey in the process.

“We’re fine, we’ll find a good craftsman and pay him or her to train Juila if she doesn’t make the cut as a fighter. And that’s if she lives… definitely don’t send her into the fray of things until she’s trained up a bit.”

Trey rolled his eyes and folded his arms as he patted his new thrall minion on the head - then just a bit forcefully pulled her braided hair back to get a better look at the pentagram inscribed into her skin. “That much is obvious. We’ll have a lot of work to do with this one.”

Juila’s neck was craned backwards as she stared up into his eyes, until he let her go - and she wiped the few tears she had shed off her face.

Ashe held up both hands to either side and then slapped them across Trey’s back in a bear hug. “Cheer up buttercup!”

He was not cheerful though and no amount of prodding would ease him into it. Now though, the reason was a little different - and was found within his status page. He was confused about why he only had 15 control slots total after the Wisdom stat increase was combined with the 2 free control slots given to him by Alkir.

The All Spirit was front-ending the free slots instead of back-ending them.

What that meant was that his free slots were being used in the cheaper category. For infernal summoners, a minion control slot cost 5 Wisdom. When that number surpassed 10 slots and went to 11, the number doubled. It would continue to double every 10 slots. So 1-10 minion slots would cost 5 apiece excluding the free one he started with and the two freebies he got from Alkir. Slots 11-20 would cost him 10 Wisdom apiece, slots 21-30 would cost 20 Wisdom apiece, slots 31-40 would cost him 40 Wisdom apiece, slots 41-50 would cost him 80 Wisdom apiece, and so on.

His status page said he currently had 15 slots. The only way that would work was if he was being front-ended with those free slots he’d gotten, each of them applying to the 5 willpower slot category instead of a higher one. 3 slots were now free and go to the front due to the first one he got as a summoner and 2 he got as a horror crusader. Currently he had 92 willpower, with the first 10 slots costing 5 willpower apiece and slots 11-20 costing 10 willpower apiece. 7 slots to make up the remaining 1-10 are 5 willpower each for 35 willpower. 92-35=57 Willpower left after 10 slots owned. The next slots are 10 willpower apiece and he had 57 Willpower left with the math in play so he got 5 more slots for a total of 15 current control slots and 7 willpower left over.

What bullshit. He’d been cheated, but at least he didn’t need them immediately. He was only at 6 of 15 slots filled even with Juila added in so he could definitely find some new additions and not have to worry about it in the near future.

At least he was coming along in the progress department. They still had the rest of this dungeon to explore though and finding that amulet was a priority even if Gorthomal was dead. Hopefully their newfound upgrades would come in handy for the trials awaiting them… and hopefully it wouldn’t take too much time.

He hadn’t placed his skill or stat points for 7 entire levels now… it was seriously something he needed to work on being better at. Assigning the 7 free-floating skill points to shadowstep, upgrading it to reduce its cooldown after surpassing level 10, and placing his unused stat points into strength with the passive willpower points in turn: he got to add another 2 control slots for a total of 17. He took a final look at his status page before heading over to the well-hidden door he’d only noticed an hour ago on the left wall. If possible, he’d get his hands on that amulet and high-tail it out of Ornthas back to Teretog within the week.

Trey closed the status pages down after having reviewed them to his liking and without another word to anyone else he set off in the direction of the hidden door on the left wall. It was time to see what lay ahead, that nifty amulet gorthomal had come for was calling his name. He could only imagine how much tankier he’d be with 1000 more HP.

Ashe caught up to him and came to a trot, matching his speed easily enough even with a shorter stature. “Where ya going, home boy?”

“Over yonder, my fair lady.” Trey pointed directly ahead and about 25 yards away. “See it?”

Ashe frowned and shook her head. “Nope, no idea what you’re doing.”

“You’ll see it soon enough.”

Sure enough Ashe did see it just a few seconds later. With a clap of her hands she rushed ahead, easily covering the ground far faster than Trey would have been able to run without shadowstepping. She hadn’t even been sprinting either, and Trey’s choice to keep that fox totem for Ashe instead of selling it was appreciated again for the umpteenth time. It had been well worth the dexterity and speed boosts, even if they had lost out on a ton of money.

By the time he got up to the door she was already inspecting a small handle built into the stone and hidden by the way the wall was texturized.

“Pull it?” She asked hesitantly, not sure if it was the right thing to do considering where they were.

Trey shrugged with a grin. “Why not? I’ll go first.”

He took the handle in one hand and yanked. The door slid open a lot more easily than he’d anticipated, though the dust from the pull came down like a shower and caused him to cough.

A low, insidious growl erupted like the boom of a drum from directly ahead. He caught his breath, stopped coughing and raised his eyes from where he’d been rubbing them. Just ahead and within the dark corridor were five sets of large yellow eyeballs, each many times the size of him, all of which were attached to their own individual dragon’s head within the dark room in front that even his own night vision could not pierce.

“Ah… Fuck this.” Trey hurried and slammed the stone door shut with a bang and put his back to it, expecting an attack to jolt the other side and blast the wall away.

But to his relief - the attack never came. He held his breath and continued to brace himself, eventually looking up and seeing Ashe wide eyed and terrified.

Ashe slowly began to back away. “We’re… not going to complete this dungeon, are we?”

Trey shook his head a few times in quick succession, heart still pounding but starting to calm as the attack didn’t land on the other side. “Absolutely not. Was Gorthomal insane? Let’s get the fuck out of here and back to Teretog… There's a reason why no other summoners were able to get that amulet. I can now see why.”

Ashe enthusiastically gave him two thumbs up. “Agreed. To Teretog we go.”
