Under the Starlit Canopy

Chapter 10: Under the Starlit Canopy

The forest was unusually quiet that night. Even the rustling of leaves seemed subdued, as if the land itself was catching its breath. The soft glow of the campfire illuminated the clearing where Hiro, Jason, and Layra had set up camp. The faint embers crackled sporadically, a stark contrast to the chaos of their journey so far.

Jason lay sprawled near the fire, his arms crossed behind his head. A contented smile played on his lips as he gazed up at the stars, the flickering flames casting faint shadows on his face.

Jason: (grinning) “You know, I always wanted to be an adventurer. Thought I’d be mapping uncharted territories, meeting strange creatures, maybe even chasing treasure. Never thought it’d involve chasing demons and ancient runes.”

Layra, sitting on a fallen log nearby, raised an eyebrow.

Layra: “Exploring ruins isn’t adventurous enough for you?”

Jason chuckled, propping himself up on one elbow.

Jason: “It’s plenty adventurous, don’t get me wrong. Just… not how I imagined it. Still, if these ruins help us figure out how to stop Malakhar, I’m all in.”

Hiro sat cross-legged by the fire, the elven rune in his lap. His focus was fixed on its intricate carvings, his amber eyes catching the firelight.

Hiro: (calmly) “Ruins or not, this is the only way forward. If we don’t find answers, there’s no stopping him.”

New Paths

Jason leaned back again, his expression thoughtful.

Jason: “Yeah, I get that. Just didn’t expect to spend my time dodging traps and deciphering ancient carvings. Guess being an adventurer isn’t all tavern songs and glory.”

Layra smirked faintly, adjusting her position on the log.

Layra: “It never is. But at least you’re getting the stories, even if they’re a bit darker than you planned.”

Jason: “You’re not wrong. Though I’d prefer fewer goblins and more treasure chests.”

Hiro remained quiet, his fingers tracing the rune’s surface as he studied its patterns. He’d already memorized its details, but something about it tugged at him—a faint familiarity he couldn’t place.

Layra broke the silence, her voice softer now.

Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation.

Layra: “You know, you’re not the only one adjusting. I never thought I’d be traveling with humans. And yet, here we are.”

Jason raised a hand, mockingly wiping a tear from his cheek.

Jason: “Wow, Layra. That almost sounded like a compliment.”

Layra rolled her eyes but smiled faintly.

Layra: “Don’t let it go to your head. You’re still loud and reckless.”

Jason: “And charming.”

Layra didn’t dignify that with a response, though the corners of her lips twitched.

A Story Shared

As the fire burned lower, the conversation shifted. Layra’s gaze turned distant, her sharp green eyes reflecting the firelight.

Layra: “When I was younger, my people would gather like this. Around a fire. We’d tell stories, sing songs… It feels like it was lifetimes ago.”

Jason glanced at her, his usual grin fading as he sat up.

Jason: “What happened?”

Layra hesitated, her fingers toying with the hilt of her dagger.

Layra: “The demons happened. They came in waves, relentless and unyielding. My family… my kingdom… gone. I’ve been wandering ever since, trying to piece together what little is left.”

Hiro looked up from the rune, his voice quiet but firm.

Hiro: “And you’ve kept going. That’s what matters.”

Layra met his gaze, her expression softening slightly.

Layra: “I don’t know if it’s bravery or stubbornness. Maybe both.”

Jason: “Well, whatever it is, you’re stuck with us now. We’re not exactly the average adventuring party, but we’re damn good at surviving.”

Layra: “You think so?”

Jason: (grinning) “Absolutely. We’ve got time magic, fire magic, and your badass vines. If that’s not unstoppable, I don’t know what is.”

Layra shook her head, but a faint smile tugged at her lips.

Preparation for the Journey

The fire dimmed as the night deepened. Hiro spread out Eldrin’s map, the markings catching the faint glow of the embers.

Hiro: “Eldoria’s two weeks away. Once we get there, we’ll need to register with the guild. It’s the only way to access the protected ruins.”

Jason groaned, flopping dramatically onto his back.

Jason: “More rules, more bureaucracy. I thought adventuring was supposed to be fun.”

Layra smirked, standing to stretch.

Layra: “It’s not all taverns and treasure, Jason. But the guild might have resources we need. Information, maps… maybe even allies.”

Hiro nodded, rolling up the map and tucking it back into his pack.

Hiro: “We’ll make it work. We have to.”

Jason: “Yeah, yeah. Just don’t let me drown in paperwork, alright?”

Layra chuckled, shaking her head.

Layra: “I’ll make sure you survive, loudmouth.”

Jason flashed her a grin, the tension of their journey easing just slightly.

Under the Stars

As Jason and Layra drifted off, Hiro remained awake, staring at the dying fire. His thoughts lingered on the rune, the ruins, and the path ahead. Each piece felt connected, but the picture they formed was still unclear.

Above him, the stars glittered faintly, offering no answers but a quiet comfort.

Hiro: (to himself) “We’ll figure this out. We have to.”

With that, he settled against his pack, his resolve burning as steadily as the embers of the fire.
