Chapter 8: Bonds on the Road
The sun climbed slowly over the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and gold. The dense forest that had surrounded them for days was beginning to thin, giving way to rolling hills dotted with wildflowers. Hiro walked slightly ahead, his staff resting against his shoulder, while Jason and Lyra trailed behind, their banter breaking the stillness of the morning.
Three weeks lay ahead before they would reach Eldoria, but for now, the road was quiet, the danger temporarily behind them. It was a rare stretch of peace, one they intended to savor.

Morning on the Road
Jason yawned dramatically, tossing his pack over his shoulder.
Jason: (grinning) “I don’t know what’s worse—demons or this damn walking. My legs are gonna fall off.”
Lyra smirked, adjusting her bow across her back.
Lyra: “You’re a lot louder than the demons, I’ll give you that.”
Jason feigned a gasp, clutching his chest.
Jason: “Wow, Lyra. That hurts. Here I thought we were bonding.”
Hiro glanced back, his expression stoic but amused.
Hiro: “If we can survive you two, we can survive anything.”
The trio fell into a comfortable rhythm, their boots crunching against the dirt path. The morning air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of wildflowers and damp earth.

An Unexpected Encounter
By midday, the group spotted a covered wagon stopped on the side of the road. The wagon’s wheel was broken, the wooden spokes splintered beyond repair. A man and a young boy stood beside it, the boy looking nervously into the woods while the man inspected the damage.
Jason: (nudging Hiro) “Looks like they could use a hand.”
Hiro approached first, raising a hand in greeting.
Hiro: “Do you need help?”
The man looked up, relief washing over his face.
Man: “Thank the gods. We were on our way to Eldoria when the wheel gave out. I don’t suppose any of you know how to fix a wagon?”
Jason cracked his knuckles.
Jason: “I’m not bad with tools. Let me take a look.”

While Jason crouched to examine the wheel, Lyra knelt beside the boy, who clutched a small wooden toy in his hands.
Lyra: “What’s your name?”
Boy: (shyly) “Eren.”
Lyra smiled gently, her green eyes soft.
Lyra: “Don’t worry, Eren. We’ll get you back on the road in no time.”
Hiro stood watch, his eyes scanning the tree line for any sign of danger. The road had been quiet, but instincts honed by years of battle told him not to let his guard down.
Jason: (grumbling) “This wheel’s seen better days, but I think I can patch it up. Hiro, grab me some of that resin from the pack.”
Hiro handed over the supplies, watching as Jason worked. Despite his constant joking, Jason’s focus was impressive, his hands moving deftly to reinforce the broken spokes.

A Small Threat
As the wagon repair progressed, Hiro noticed a flicker of movement in the trees. His grip tightened on his staff as he stepped forward.
Hiro: (calmly) “Lyra, stay close to the boy.”
Lyra’s gaze snapped to the forest, her hand already reaching for her bow.
Lyra: “What is it?”
Hiro’s amber eyes glowed faintly, the Eye of Time activating. The shimmer of something unnatural appeared—three small creatures, their black forms darting between the trees.
Hiro: “Demons. Small ones. Stay sharp.”
Jason looked up from his work, his grin faltering.
Jason: “Can’t we get one day off?”
The first demon lunged from the brush, its fanged maw snapping at Hiro. He sidestepped smoothly, his staff transforming into a spear in a flash of light. The blade struck true, impaling the creature before it could land.
Jason stood, flames igniting in his palms.
Jason: “Alright, you little bastards. Let’s dance.”
The other two demons charged, but Lyra’s arrow found one of their throats before it got far. The last demon hesitated, snarling as it circled them.
Lyra: (calmly) “Go ahead. Make your move.”
The demon lunged for the boy, but Hiro’s barrier magic shimmered to life, stopping it mid-air.
Hiro: (coldly) “Not today.”
Jason followed up with a fireball, reducing the demon to ash.

Back on the Road
With the threat neutralized, the group returned to the wagon. The man thanked them profusely, his hands trembling as he clasped Hiro’s.
Man: “I don’t know how to repay you. If you hadn’t been here...”
Hiro shook his head.
Hiro: “Just be careful. The roads aren’t safe.”
Jason finished the repair, dusting his hands off with a smug grin.
Jason: “Good as new. Well, not really, but it’ll get you to Eldoria.”
The boy tugged on Lyra’s sleeve, his eyes wide with awe.
Eren: “Are you a real elf?”
Lyra hesitated, her expression softening.
Lyra: “I am.”
Eren beamed, clutching his toy tightly.
Eren: “I’ve never met an elf before. You’re amazing!”
Jason smirked, nudging Lyra.
Jason: “See? Someone appreciates you.”
Lyra rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide her faint smile.
As the wagon trundled down the road, the group watched it disappear into the distance.
Jason: (stretching) “That was nice. Saving people, fixing stuff—it’s like we’re actual heroes.”
Hiro: (quietly) “We still have a long way to go.”
Lyra adjusted her quiver, her gaze thoughtful.
Lyra: “Maybe. But we’re on the right path.”
The trio resumed their journey, the sun dipping lower in the sky as the road stretched endlessly ahead. For now, they walked in silence, the bond between them stronger than ever.
