Preparations and Uncertainty

Chapter 14: Preparations and Uncertainty

----------------------------------------

A Lull in the Action

The vibrant hum of Eldoria provided a stark contrast to the tension that had gripped the trio during their previous quests. Having successfully dealt with the slime infestation, Hiro, Jason, and Lyra found themselves in a rare moment of respite.

Jason stretched out in a chair at The Gilded Lantern, his fiery gauntlets resting on the table in front of him.

Jason: (grinning) “A little break doesn’t hurt, does it? Maybe this adventuring gig isn’t so bad after all.”

Lyra sat across from him, flipping through a small journal filled with notes on plants and magic.

Lyra: (without looking up) “Enjoy it while it lasts. The guild’s not going to give us easy tasks forever.”

Hiro, standing by the window, stared out at the bustling streets below. His amber eyes reflected a mixture of calm and focus.

Hiro: “Every moment matters. The demons aren’t waiting for us to catch our breath.”

Jason groaned, tossing an apple core into a nearby bin.

Jason: “Always so serious, Hiro. Lighten up a little. Even heroes need a day off.”

Hiro turned, his gaze steady.

Hiro: “We’re not heroes, Jason. Not yet.”

A New Assignment Looms

Later that day, the trio found themselves back at the Adventurers’ Guild, scanning the mission board for their next task. The board was cluttered with requests, ranging from simple deliveries to perilous monster hunts.

Jason: (teasing) “What are we picking this time? Maybe something with fewer slime explosions?”

Lyra’s sharp eyes scanned the notices, pausing on one with the guild’s alchemy seal.

Lyra: “Here. The alchemy division needs rare herbs from Mistwood Forest.”

Jason raised an eyebrow, leaning in to read the notice.

Jason: “Mistwood, huh? Sounds... peaceful.”

Lyra: (dryly) “Peaceful isn’t the word I’d use. Mistwood is dense, unpredictable, and full of creatures that don’t like visitors.”

This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

Jason shrugged, his grin undiminished.

Jason: “Still sounds better than mucking around with slimes. Let’s do it.”

Hiro plucked the notice from the board, scanning it carefully.

Hiro: “The guild wouldn’t mark this with an alchemy seal if it were just a simple gathering mission. Let’s be prepared.”

Gathering Supplies

The next day, the group spent their morning gathering supplies for the journey. Mistwood was known for its thick fog, territorial creatures, and unpredictable terrain, and they didn’t intend to leave anything to chance.

Lyra led the way through Eldoria’s marketplace, her hood pulled low to avoid drawing attention. Her knowledge of plants and potions made her the group’s natural guide.

Lyra: “We’ll need repellents for the insects and something to counteract any venom. Mistwood’s wildlife isn’t forgiving.”

Jason stopped at a blacksmith’s forge, his eyes lighting up at the sight of newly forged weapons and armor.

Jason: “Think they’ve got anything that’ll help me hit harder?”

The blacksmith, a gruff dwarf with a booming laugh, shook his head.

Blacksmith: “Your punches are fire enough, lad. What you need is endurance. Try one of these.”

He handed Jason a sturdy pair of bracers reinforced with enchanted leather.

Jason: “Durable and stylish. I’ll take them.”

Meanwhile, Hiro lingered at a stall selling magical trinkets. His eyes settled on a small pendant etched with runes. The merchant, a stout human with a weathered face, leaned forward.

Merchant: “That one enhances focus. Good for long spells or tricky situations.”

Hiro nodded, sliding a few coins across the counter.

Hiro: “Focus is always useful.”

A Moment of Reflection

That evening, the trio gathered at the inn to finalize their preparations. Lyra spread a map of Mistwood Forest across the table, marking key areas with a piece of charcoal.

Lyra: “We’ll start here, near the forest’s edge. The herbs we need grow deeper inside, where the mist is thickest.”

Jason leaned back in his chair, balancing a mug of ale on his knee.

Jason: “You’ve been quiet, Hiro. Something on your mind?”

Hiro glanced up from the pendant he was inspecting, his expression thoughtful.

Hiro: “The Mistwood Wolf.”

Jason blinked, his playful grin fading.

Jason: “What about it?”

Hiro: “They’re not just animals. They’re guardians of the forest. If we encounter one, it won’t be by chance.”

Lyra’s brow furrowed as she traced a path on the map.

Lyra: “They’re territorial. If we tread carefully, we can avoid conflict. But we need to be prepared for anything.”

Jason clinked his mug against the edge of the table, his grin returning.

Jason: “Prepared is our middle name. We’ve got this.”

Lyra smirked, though her sharp green eyes betrayed her concern.

Lyra: “Let’s hope your confidence isn’t misplaced.”

Hiro placed the pendant around his neck, his resolve clear.

Hiro: “Let’s get some rest. Tomorrow, we’ll find out if it is.”
