Chapter 1

Hydrodamalis, a constellation that comprises fifteen stars, bears a striking resemblance to a porcupine in shape. This celestial formation is most prominent in the Northwestern sky during spring.

The name of the Hydrodamalis constellation, still in use today, originated from an ancient society that viewed it as the embodiment of the god of pleasure.

According to astrological beliefs, individuals born under the Hydrodamalis constellation, which is associated with the sign of time, are believed to possess the potential for success in life.

Those born under the constellations resembling a chipmunk, sparrow, and seagull are said to be well-suited to those born under the Hydrodamalis constellation. However, individuals born under the swan, ox, and cow constellations are believed to be incompatible with them.

Chalice Shadowsoul would gaze up at the night sky and indulge in daydreams of distant worlds.

Lost in the universe's vastness, her mind would wander to the possibility of life on other planets and the mysteries of the cosmos. She would often spend hours lying on the grass, staring up at the twinkling stars, and contemplating the vastness of the universe.

For Chalice, the night sky was a portal to infinite possibilities and an endless source of inspiration. She would immerse herself in thoughts of far-off galaxies and alien civilizations, wondering what secrets they might hold.

Despite the vastness of the universe, Chalice found comfort in the constancy of the stars, each one a familiar beacon in the endless expanse of space. And in those moments of contemplation, she felt a deep sense of connection to something greater than herself, something infinite and eternal.

Chalice’s vivid imagination led her to dream up a planet within the Hydrodamalis constellation, which she named Aelara, based on her envisioned properties. This planet was Earth-like, in a sparsely populated solar system with only five other planets.

Aelara dwarfed Earth, measuring three times its size and exerting a stronger gravitational force.

In Chalice’s imagination, Aelara boasted a unique set of characteristics, including a day that stretched to 26 hours and a year that spanned 353 days. The planet’s landmass was divided into three continents, accounting for a mere 19% of its surface area.

Four orbiting moons also accompanied Aelara, while it orbited a white sun in a nearly perfect circular orbit.

On Aelara, plant-like organisms were sparsely spread across the planet, mostly comprising an extensive variety of bushes. Each of these bushes possessed the unique ability to absorb nutrients from a vast area around it, leaving little for other species to thrive on. As a result, the bushes on Aelara exhibited diverse shapes, sizes, colors, and scents, influenced by the varied nutrients in their respective areas.

Chalice indulged in some entertaining thoughts of the unique organisms on Aelara, imagining that being eaten would typically signal the end of an individual organism, or at least the consumed part. However, some species on this planet had evolved remarkable resilience. Even if consumed whole or in sizable pieces, these species continued to grow and self-repair. Some even benefited from being excreted and growing wherever they landed, enriched by the added nutrients from the waste.

Other species had specialized in adapting to being consumed and digested by animals. They displayed remarkable patience and resistance to stomach acids, transforming while inside an animal’s digestive system.

Chalice’s imagination ran wild as she considered the possibilities of Aelara’s unique species. She envisioned some species could enter a hibernation-like state, protecting themselves from the harsh effects of stomach acids and the absence of sunlight. In this dormant state, they would patiently wait, occasionally drawing nutrients from the consumed food in the stomach, until the animal perished and the stomach lost its acidic properties.

Once the environment became favorable again, the organism would spring back to life, thriving on the abundance of nutrients provided by the decomposing animal.

Chalice also contemplated the aquatic life on Aelara, imagining what could be found in the planet’s waters. Without the presence of a few dozen aquatic plant species, the waters of Aelara would be almost devoid of life. However, these hardy plant species had colonized every part of the planet covered in water.

Many of these aquatic plants had evolved to thrive at specific depths, creating unique ecosystems with their distinct beauty. Each depth level hosted a specialized community of species adapted to that environment, making for a diverse and vibrant underwater world.

Chalice’s thoughts also turned to the possibility of intelligent life on other planets. However, her vision for Aelara’s inhabitants differed greatly from the advanced, technologically sophisticated beings often portrayed in science fiction.

The intelligent species on Aelara, while possessing intelligence, were not much more advanced than humans during the late Stone Age. They had developed a language but had not yet created a written form of it, posing a significant challenge for potential communication with other alien species.

Despite their lack of technological advancement, these beings had a profound fascination with space. They revered the night sky, even worshipping it, and many of them created crude drawings of constellations, surrounding planets, and their moons. Their interest in space was a driving force in their culture and way of life.
