Chapter 8 - Going the Distance

Chapter 8 - Going the Distance

Jake's head slammed against the porcelain of the toilet as he struggled for breath. Diving into the slime… that might have been too much.

Getting the spider bites to the face and his arm slammed to the ground by the Slime King, those didn't feel real. But the running and the almost drowning slime innards definitely did.

His lungs felt like they were on fire and he wanted to give up. He wasn’t sure if almost drowning to death was worth the seven hundred dollars.

“Hah… vitality increases… hah…” Jake struggled to get the words out between breaths. “It increases… stamina, right?”

Heads Up!

Yes

"Put five of my points… into vitality," Screw holding onto them for later, he thought. He needed them now.

Heads Up!

First stat point allocation. Are you sure?

"Yes."

Stats Allocated!

Vitality Increased!

10 → 15

Total HP Increased!

200 → 300

All of a sudden, he felt a bit better.

Jake got up, half-drenched in funeral gel, trying his best not to slip on what the giant slime had left behind and fall twenty-odd feet down the side of the toilet bowl or worse into the bowl itself.

Standing tall, proud, and soaked in gel, Jake finally set eyes on the Slime King who'd been taking shots at him from up above. It was almost twice the size of the slime that he had just gotten out of and that one had been big enough to swallow a jacuzzi. If he wasn't so transparent, Jake might not have been able to see the toilet water under it. Also, it wore a crown.

The Slime King shook violently. It had barely given Jake five seconds after standing up straight before it got ready to launch another mountain of slime at him.

Oh boy... Jake thought. The slime eruption arced as it neared the ceiling and came falling over to where he was standing.

He held up his hands. Running out of the way wasn't an option when the seat had become so slicked in gel, so he had to take a risk. The moment the gel eruption entered his range, he’d try sending it into his Inventory.

Something different happened, however, when he tried to use his skill this time. A crude portal opened up between his raised hands. It swallowed part of the slime king’s attack, but there was too much flowing through it at once for Jake to handle. His remaining mana pool emptied in an instant and his Inventory’s pocket dimension collapsed.

His basket, the cans, the gel core sac, his hunting knives, and his bat, everything he had inside his Inventory came crashing out onto the toilet’s rim or falling over its edge around him covered in the slime he’d tried loading in there with them.

“Oof!” Jake grunted. The part of the slime he hadn’t managed to get through the portal hammered his chest and slammed him against the toilet’s rim.

New Status Effect!

STUNNED!

At least it isn’t ‘New Status Effect! DEAD!’ Jake thought. He took a quick look at his general stats while waiting for the stun effect to wear off.

Level 3

Health: 137 / 300

Mana: 0 / 100

No more magic.

The stun lasted for only a few seconds before Jake was able to sit up. He leaned on the hardened gel left behind by the Slime King’s attack, picked up three of the cans of bug spray that still remained on the toilet seat, then gave a glance to the Slime King.

There was no way he could pull the same trick he’d done with the Giant Slime on it. He'd suffocate before he reached the Slime King’s core. Honestly, if he hadn’t confirmed during the initial tutorial that his health points hitting zero wouldn’t kill him, he’d have never even risked coming here after finding out the drowning status effect was something you actually felt in the sink room.

His ‘crack the can with the bat’ trick wouldn’t work either. Even if his bat hadn’t fallen off the side of the toilet, his cans didn’t have nearly enough firepower for them to dig through to the king’s core like that.

There was no effective way for him to attack the king directly. It wasn’t something he was worried about, though, since a direct attack was never his plan to begin with.

Jake slid through the gel over to the toilet's tank and started climbing the ladder to the top of it. The Slime King had come up from the sewers and he was going to send him back to them.

"Ah!" he shouted. Right before he reached the top of the ladder a Really Big Spider jump scared him. He grabbed its leg and threw it over his shoulder into the bowl with the Slime King.

Pulling himself up, Jake turned towards the last obstacle standing in his way, a lone gel slime, bigger than the level 2s, but smaller than the huge level 7, he’d almost drowned in. He held up a can of bug spray and shook it well. "Let's do this," he said.

The slime lunged at him and he let it take his arm along with the can of spray. Jake sprayed its core directly and the blob barely lasted three seconds before it collapsed into a puddle.

He jumped straight onto the toilet's handle, hoping his weight would be enough to push it down.

It wasn't. The handle barely even budged.

He could hear the sides of the toilet making squeaking sounds as the ground slimes started climbing up its sides. If he didn't figure out a way to end this quick, this was going to become a lot harder.

Thinking fast, Jake got back up on top of the tank again, then pulled up the ladder in a hurry. After that, he jumped back onto the handle. He was just in time for the Slime King's next attack.

As the gel eruption arced in the air, Jake used the ladder to swing down to the toilet seat. It wasn't a graceful descent, but it got the job done.

The Slime King’s wrath slammed into the handle and Jake felt the toilet shake beneath him as water rushed out into the bowl and what was already there rapidly began to drain.

The Slime King let out a bubbly cry as both it and its crown were sucked back down into the sewers that they had come from. Jake’s mission was fulfilled, the Gel Slime King was defeated.

None of its subjects attacked him. They all just kept still until the toilet bowl rapids calmed. And when they did calm, they all started running away.

Watching the last slime jump off the toilet seat, so it could scurry off through some crack, Jake said, “Yeah… Better run.”

You have flushed a Gel Slime King!

Enemy: Level 10

Quest Completed!

The Gel Slime King has been banished back to whence it came and though it has not been slain, its bulbous pride has been damaged. Keep a watchful eye, for it may return some day to occupy these lands yet again.

Note

You will be assigned a quest and a notification will be sent to you if the Gel Slime King ever returns.

Note

The Gel Slime King can be found and hunted by creating or entering a game instance in the sewers near your house if you wish to avoid the possibility of his return.

Let it come back, Jake thought. He’d plaster it across the toilet bowl if that living blob of hand sanitizer gave him another chance.

“Ugh…” he let out something between a groan and a sigh. He’d definitely plaster it… after he’d gotten a reasonable break.

Tutorial - Exiting Instances Part 2

After completing your current quest(s) for an instance, you can exit freely without negative consequences by taking off your display shades.

Note

It is still advised that you enter from the outside properly, however.

Jake almost took off his sunglasses right then and there, before remembering that he’d probably teleport his foot straight into the toilet bowl if did so. After climbing down a toilet paper ladder and collecting as much of what had spilled out of his Inventory as he could, Jake took off his display shades.

The world zoomed by him for all of three seconds and then he was back in the guest bathroom, standing in front of the toilet. No dizziness, no disorientation, and no consequences, just like the notification had said.

The mother load of gel that was stuck on him was gone too now and Jake was very thankful for that. He organized the inventory mess he had brought back with him, then headed over to the kitchen to get something to eat.

Once he had that, he headed back to his room to take a break. And it was only supposed to be that, a break. Sure, he really didn't want to go back and fight another army of slimes today—or anytime for at least the next week for that matter—but he'd just be leaving money on the table if he didn't at least try for the first day bonus.

That's why, after he had gotten as much rest as he could manage without passing out on his bed, Jake put back on his shades barely prepared for whatever they'd throw at him next. He decided to get the tutorial notification he had ignored last time out of the way first.

Tutorial - Recurring Enemies

Strategies used against an opponent once before might not work against them a second time.

Tutorial - Keep Moving On

Though enemies in some areas may respawn, you will not gain experience or item drops for killing them again unless you've received a new quest for that area.

This factor does not hamper the growth of skills you practice using against respawned enemies unless the skills require kills to function or level properly.

Note

You can still receive experience for enemies you failed to kill the first time around if they are still present.

With the boring stuff out of the way, it was time for his next quest.

New Quest

Founder's Quest 2 - Prelude

Since you've set your first instance up indoors, how about you set up your second outside?

Set up a second instance outdoors using a set of scanners.

Reward: The next part of this quest!

Simple enough, Jake thought.

WARNING!

Upon exiting your first instance after completing a quest, Beginner’s Protection has worn off for you. You will now experience death when your health points are reduced to zero.

Jake just sat there in silence for a few seconds, staring at the message. “Huh?”
