Volume 1, Chapter 20: Classification

“Alright Class, we’ve talked about elements for a while, but today you’ll learn about a fundamental system: we’re going over classes!”

“Aren’t we already in classes?”

The kids laughed at this remark, even the teacher couldn’t resist cracking a smile.

“Very clever Susan, but no. I’m talking about knights, dragoons, mages, and more. You may have heard of them, in fact I can’t imagine any of you not hearing about at least one, but I doubt any of you know all of them and what they do.”

The teacher drew a sword on his black board, Luke and several other students recoiling at the painful screeching of the chalk. After drawing three lines to three separate words, he turned toward the class.

“Knights, cavaliers, and paladins are all the sword wielding, armor wearing warriors you’ve heard in story books. Knights focus on defense, cavaliers focus on speed and ferocity, and paladins focus on power.”

Turning back around, he began again, but this time his drawing was mercifully short, with only the word “Mage” written down.

“Mages have no particular sub category, as they are specific class describing those with one element and lots of mana. Mages are incredibly powerful but very simple, able to withstand excessive force thanks to their mana, but generally wish to focus that into their attacks. Usually they focus on power to the detriment of everything else, but how you wish to go about being a mage is your business.”

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

As he picked up the chalk again, the students braced themselves.

“Rogues are a speed attacker, meant to home in on weak points. Assassins, on the other hand, will use a more stealthy and powerful approach to take out their target with as little struggle as possible. Scouts are delivery men and women.”

“Dragoons are a special class that requires a specific element, in this case wind, to even be applicable to the role. Dragoons are focused on jumping, either doing aerial assaults, scouting, delivery, etc.”

“Clerics are healers. They use their elements to mend wounds, though how they go about this can make them more terrifying than comforting.”

“Archers? Well you don’t see many in Lumina. They use bows, and…well that’s most of what I know about them outside of elves. You’ll learn about races some other times.”

To the relief of every student in the room, the man had put down the chalk and wiped his hands on his shirt.

“The most important thing to remember is this: classifications are just labels. You are free to adopt whatever fighting style you find to be effective, label it whatever you want, and go about your day. These labels are just what most people use for convenience.”

“Oh hey Luke, I thought you’d be seeing the princess today.”

“Well, I kind of wanted to avoid her after yesterday, I think she might be a little angry at me.”

“For what?”

“Well, I wondered if she told her mom about my friend.”

“You think the queen forced her to leave?”

“No! Well…maybe. Maybe Elizabeth didn’t ask her to though.” Luke fidgeted, not expecting his brother to immediately jump to conclusions.

“I don’t know Luke, girls can get kind of jealous. I mean, guys can too, but in my experience, girls get flat mean. I wouldn’t put it passed her to do something like that.”

“Do you think she’d do the same to me?”

“No, as long as you don’t push the matter. We’re not nobility for nothing, our mom and dad know the queen personally, but still, I would drop it if I were you.”

“Yeah, that’s what I was going to do.”

The younger sibling walked off, but not before muttering his breath.

“Some help you are.”
