Chapter 9: My New Room

(Dungeon POV)

Gold coins! If what I know of fantasy games is true this is a pretty good amount of money! Tiara, could you give me a quick layout of how currency works here?

“Currency?” She seemed a bit confused, uh coins and how much each is worth if you could please. “Oh well it’s just a simple system of tens, we have tin copper small silver large silver small gold and large gold. I heard there’s a special coin only royalty have that’s worth ten large gold coins but I’ve never seen it.” Ok so that answers the system, pretty easy now what can you buy with one tin?

“One tin won’t get you much, but if you get five tin you can get a loaf of bread from the bakery in town, but it’s usually not that great for that little.” She says that as if she’s been able to try higher class bread before “I have,” she answers, I keep forgetting she can hear me talk to myself, “a nice royal that came through gave me a piece of their bread when they came to visit us, when this place was still an orphanage.”

As sad as that is let’s do some quick maths to find out how much the kiddos have to work with now, I think five tin is about one US dollar. So a copper is like the two dollar bill, a small silver is a twenty, a silver a two hundred, so a small gold should be- two thousand?! And they have 5 of them in that bag! That’s an even ten thousand dollars! Holy crap! I don’t think the kids will be going hungry any time soon, and I definitely need to make something as a thank you to that Anderson guy. I don’t know if I’d have the will power to come across that much money and just give it away like that. He really is a good guy.

Hide the coins, keep them in your pocket or something just make sure they aren’t out in the open. Tiara relays my orders to Tommy and he understands how much this is and puts it in his pocket. Which reminds me, it’s kinda cramped in here. My core is about the size of one of those personal watermelons, and is very cramped in the dirt right now. Let’s see, widow points out the space under the stairs, it’s not really a room, no door to get in anyway. Perfect, they’d have to smash the wall down to get to it. Ok let’s get things ready to move, Tiara I need Tommy Sara and James to get ready, we’re moving the core, have them follow panzer with it and put it where widow crawls into. The rest of you are on lookout from the basement to the stairs to the second floor, got it?

Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit.

“Uh that was a lot but I think so,” she turns toward Tommy and after a few words he runs off to get the others. This should be easy seeing the strength at my command now and the lack of new vermin to attack me yet. I get widow near the stairs and panzer wait, is he back yet? I look over to the rat den just in Tim to see a rat crawl out and rapidly grow into panzer, that was a little unsettling to watch but ok you know whats going on? I need you to help move the core, go by the chest and wait for the three kids.

He scuttles over and dutifully waits for his new friends, oh and there they are! I really need to get them some better weapons, I hope they aren’t that expensive, I’ll have to send Tommy with Anderson to go get them sometime. But that’s for later now, we move. Panzer shoves the chest out of the way and 2 smaller rats start digging out my core. Soon enough the kids get their first glimpse of my core and Tommy says exactly what I’m thinking “it’s green?”

Panzer on the other hand is unfazed and grabs my core gently in his mouth and moves for the stairs the kids hurry to follow, as do the rest of the critters in the basement. Panzer steps on quite a few and shakes some off of his fur but the kids catch up and start stomping all around to take them out. A combination of centipedes, flies, cockroaches, and pill bugs all trying their best to get at my poor core. A veritable flood of rats comes down the stairs eating many of the vermin and cleaning a path for panzer and the kids.

They make their way through the kitchen just fine and the other kids and spiders are fighting a small incursion in the dining room. Panzer and the kids ignore them and move toward the stairs where Tiara and Widow are waiting. “Here!” Tiara points to Widow, she’s very small but very strong, panzer puts my core down on the ground and widow just rolls it under the stairs covers it with a price of wood from the inside and climbs out a different smaller hole and webs up and entrances she can find.

With my core now much more secure everything dies down. The kids in the dining room finish off the rest of the vermin that made their way in and I have the rats in the basement cool it down a bit. There’s still vermin down there but I only need maybe ten rats total down there with some spiders, not thirty.

My little home is nice and cozy with plenty of room to grow, though I may have to bust my way out if I grow much bigger. It should have a name but I don’t know what- oh let’s go with dad’s room, you know, nobody goes in dad’s room without permission type thing. I like it, a new label pops up over it and I hear a chuckle from Tommy.

I don’t know exactly how much mana I have but it definitely is a lot compared to what I’m used to, so I feel now would be the best time to expand. The option just says expand, it doesn’t even tell me if it’s up, out, down, or what, but I figure I’m strong enough to handle whatever may come. ‘Expand’.
