A waning moon hung low in the sky, painting the white room in a slight ethereal blue hue. Its gentle beams passed through the pale-blue curtains, casting surreal shadows over the draconic patterns on the walls.
Long Tian woke up, finding himself lying within his bed, his room shrouded in darkness.
*flap flap*
A thick, suffocating, silence permeated through the whole room, broken only by the faint flapping of the curtain. The silence was very contrasting to the bustling dream earlier.
Where am I?
Long Tian looked towards the silver wall clock. The dim moonlight barely illuminated the hands of the clocks.
Oh, right, I have transmigrated.
He was astonished at not having any injury this time around. Before this, even a five-minute venture into his memory fragments caused major instabilities in his body. However, here he was. Not even a hints of injury after what seemed like weeks of memory fragments.
He stared at the clock again, trying to gauge the amount of time he had been unconscious for.
He faintly remembered being on the top of Ballathor’s church. However, a thin veil seemed to be covering all the memories after that, preventing him from recalling anything.
He stared at the huge wall clock again. Something seemed off, but he could not put his hand on it.
“It’s twelve o'clock, sir.”
An androgynous robotic voice sounded from his left, causing his heart to miss a beat. He finally noticed the abnormality.
The clock had stopped tickling altogether.
A heavy chill ran through his spine as a bead of sweat quietly slid down his forehead. He noticed a faint silhouette of a person in his peripherals. He mechanically turned his head towards the figure with great effort, finally seeing it more clearly.
The small silhouette was hunching over on the chair, reading through a black diary. They seemed to be adorning a faint red rope on their petite figure. Fear gripped Long Tian as he felt his throat go dry.
Assassination attempt? No one can break through the heaven sealing formation. Unless
Long Tian’s mind kept racing as his palms sweated.
*Flip*
Long Tian felt his heart drop as he heard the page turn.
I regularly walk around without protection. If someone wanted to assassinate me, there is no need to do all of these.
He quickly bit his tongue and forcefully calmed himself down.
“You should not touch someone else’s possession without permission.”
The small figure paused lightly at the reprimand. finally turning towards Long Tian. A mosaic mask, as colourful as a Rubik's cube, was adorning his face.
“Understood. Pardon our lack of manners. Let us introduce ourselves.”
The androgynous voice seemed a bit awkward at the reprimand. The figure put their right hand inside their pocket, bringing out a small rectangular card in front of Long Tian.
A glowing white 'BCA' was itched on top, along with a picture of a masked figure. A golden insignia of ‘007’ stood proudly on the card. However, Long Tian could not make out the words below in the dim moonlight.
“We are Wednesday, from Bureau of Celestial Anomalies. Our work is related to keeping track of the irregularities and anomalies across Raoqen.”
“Not interested”
The androgynous voice staggered a bit, surprised by the lack of hesitancy in that rejection.
“You are not even going to hear us out?”
“I have enough chaos in my life as it is. A secret organisation such as yours is beyond what a mortal of my stature would be able to handle. Furthermore, I never even heard its name and have no idea of its nature. I have little desire to deal with an organisation with ambiguous or evil standing.”
Long Tian replied in a stable voice, no longer agitated or surprised.
This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.
“And there are certain restrictions to joining an organisation such as yours, none of which I am fond of.”
Wednesday looked through the square hole of the mosaic mask, squinting as he watched Long Tian stabilize himself.
“Sir, the figures that are beyond our control are at the top of the food chain, many of them no longer even exist in this dimension. Therefore, You not hearing our name is normal.”
Long Tian understood the underlying meaning behind Wednesday’s words.
“Gods and immortals!”
“Yes, Sir. Gods and Immortals who have broken through the confines of this spatial dimension”
Long Tian narrowed his eyes
“And to answer your question regarding our standing, we are merely concerned with understanding and containing irregularities whenever they endanger the living world. Our moral standing has nothing to do with it.”
Long Tian looked into the square holes of the mask, trying to peer into it.
“What does such a grand secret organisation want from me?”
“Sir, you are one of the most knowledgeable people on the continent when it comes to bio-irregularities. Your journal on Natural Anomalies contains arrays of data and research that does not exist outside.”
“There is no way I am the only person you have reached out to.”
The androgynous voice stayed silent, not denying or confirming
“It’s from outside the confines of three-dimensional space.”
Realising he was losing Long Tian’s attention, he decided to get to the point.
“……what?”
“We have bone of a being that does not belong to this dimensional space. Our prior research shows that it fell off the Sacred dimension.”
“Sacred dimension!!!!”
Long Tian sat up, no longer being able to contain his calm façade. His heart was racing loudly, as if wanting to burst out of his chest.
"Yes, sir, the place where gods and immortals ascend when they are finished mastering a law.”
“You have a bone of a God?”
Wednesday looked directly through his mask, his eyes reflecting a mysterious glint.
“Yes, sir”
Long Tian felt the back of his palms sweating. He understood the consequences of knowing this information. He calmed himself down again and looked at the figure sitting in silence.
“You sure are determined.”
The eyes behind the mask stared at Long Tian in silence. They seemed to be in no hurry for a reply. They waited in silence, waiting for Long Tian to speak again.
“And what do I get out of this?”
*whoosh*
A rectangular piece of quartz landed in Long Tian’s hands.
“If you make enough contribution, the matter of your awakening will be taken care of.”
Long Tian felt his heart racing again as looked at the transparent red liquid inside. The bubbles inside were swirling like it was alive. He seemed to have a hunch of what this could be
“This is”
“Sir, you have one week to decide.”
“If I am going to vanish for an extended period of time, what happens to my identity?”
“Everything will be taken care of as long as you agree to co-operate with us.”
Long Tian paused, looking at the red quartz in silence, before looking up.
“And what happens if I refuse?”
The masked face paused and stared deep into his eyes.
“As long as you do not divulge information, we will just remove parts of your memory about us.”
Long Tian felt his back chill at the hidden implication.
“One last question.”
As Wednesday stood up, the blue moonlight shone on their oval mosaic mask, making it look quite eerie.
“I believe that I have been quite inconspicuous, not quite enough to draw attention of an organisation of your straits”
Wednesday slowly put the journal back in its place, replying in a low tone.
“Wouldn’t you consider yourself an anomaly, sir?”
*******
Ying Mei looked at the half-designed cake in front of her, feeling pretty satisfied with the result. However, her face soon turned downtown as she remembered that Long Tian had not woken up for two days. Washing her hands, she rushed to the ninth floor.
As she entered through the large door, she saw a figure sitting on the table, illuminated by a dim yellow light. The expression on her face lit up.
“Young master!”
An excited voice rang out, breaking Long Tian out of his musings.
“MeiMei”
“Young master! We were all worried about you.”
“Don’t lie. It was probably just you."
Her happy face crumbled at his words. Although his words sounded a bit cynical, he was also correct. There really wasn’t another soul in the manor that was too concerned with his fate. Only Long Yu cared a bit, but it was really limited to that.
"How long have i been unconscious for?"
“A bit more than two days, young master.”
Long Tian felt his mind buzz. Even though he was a bit malnourished, it was not so bad to turn him unconscious for days. This whole matter seemed a bit fishy.
Even though he did not have a photographic memory, he would never forget anything like this. His memory seemed to have been intentionally tampered with.
The order of Zephyrblaze? Or could it be Doom Patrol?
He collected his theories, knowing he could not confirm them just yet. Turning around, he stared at Ying Mei gratefully, as he knew she probably had to go through a lot of trouble in the past two days.
“Thank you”
Staring at his sincere face, all of her worries were washed away. A beautiful smile rose up on her rosy cheek as she lightly reprimanded Long Tian.
“Young master, you should go back to sleep.”
“What?! I just woke up after sleeping for two days!!!”
“That doesn’t count!”
A forceful Ying Mei made sure he went back to sleep before going out of the room. She happily headed into the kitchen again. However, as soon as she reached the kitchen, she saw a small figure licking its paws peacefully.
Xiao patted its belly contentedly as it lay on top of the kitchen. Ying Mei grew suspicious and quickly turned her eyes towards the top of the oven. The cake was gone.
“XIAOOOOO”
A piercing scream rang through the third floor, waking up the entire maid group.
“SHUT UP, MEI!”
“Why are you guys screaming so loud at this time of night?”
“Ugh, you troublemaker, what is it now?”
Other maids were annoyed at being woken up. Xiao stared at her with a smug look on its furry face, it was not even slightly fretful of this maid.
It had a simple equation in mind.
Xiao = Long Tian’s master!
Long Tian = Ying Mei’s master!
So, Xiao = Ying Mei’s great master!!!
It stood up, the expression on it's disdainful face saying
“Be proud. Not everyone can get their cake tasted by this Xiao.”
Mei Ying kept staring at the leftover bits of cake in her hand, her face close to crying. Soon she stared at the thief cat, pondering if she should just dice it up and feed it to crocodiles.
“MEOWWWW!!!”
Xiao quickly detected the ill intent, running away as it went to complain to it’s mas-, ahem, 'servent’.
She sighed and walked into the kitchen again.
